My wife and I do not hide our lifestyle. I was working in construction when we became interested in nudisum and I realy didn't care if people know. Although she worked at a bank her feelings were the same. I now work for the locale county government but I still feel the same. We are even open of this lifestyle at church and there has never been a problem. There were times our opennes embaresed our daughters but they have lurned to deal with it. I believe if you're open you not only advance acceptance of nudisum but if there is now secret to keep there is no secret for someone to let out of the bag.

I'm pretty open about it except at work. As a teacher I try not to let much of my personal life be known- whether it's nudism or love life or whatever- because the kids ALWAYS find out too much and somehow the parents then find out. The parents may not know what grade their child is in, but they'd find out about my love life or nudist lifestyle if the kids knew. :)

I'm definitely an open nudist. I may tell just anyone that I prefer to skinny dip than sit around in a soggy wet, sandy swimsuit. This time of year wearing nothing feels a lot better than perspiring in hot clothing. Some tend to agree with me, but I've not seen them want to join in any of the local clubs.

Almost all of our best friends are nudists. I think it's the idea that nudists are generally more comfortable with themselves, and more open in discussions. However, I never discuss it at work, nor do I let my employees know how I spend my weekends. If I someday run into one of them during one of our nude outings then I guess we'll both know a lot more about each other afterwards, but when the clothes come off, I'm no longer at work and neither would they be.

I suppose the answer is "open" since friends and co-workers know that we vacation at Club Orient whenever time allows.
Nevertheless, openness should be mixed with thoughtfulness. The prevailing mind-set in the United States linked nudism with sex. Therefore, any discussion of nudism at work or in environments that affect children can be perceived as harassment (or worse) , whether intended or not. When asked a direct question (e.g. "Did you visit the nude beach?" ) I give short factual answers. If there are follow-up questions, I make it a point to say that I would prefer to continue the conversation in a different and unquestionably neutral venue. This is especially important when questions come from subordinates.
This is not a matter of being "ashamed"; rather this is just prudent behavior. I tend to use the "Washington Post" test. Assuming the facts were correct, would I be willing to have the substance of the interaction appear on Page 1 of the Washington Post? Moving the conversation to a neutral venue just makes sense.

We would have to join the ranks of "open" nudists. Like Melissa, my wife is also a teacher and needs to be selective about who knows.
Myself, everyone I know or have met in my 25+ years as a firefighter knows I am a nudist.
Gotta go...we're in Europe and my time on the computer at the hotel business center is about up. See you all when we get back to the US next week.

We are probably closer to "closet". I live by the adage "know your audience". Being from a very small town that I would call ultra conservative and being reasonably well known, I have to be prudent in the perception of my reputation. While the nudists I have met make me very comfortable, my neighbors and some of my friends might not be so open minded. When I get to the point that I am both comfortable and confident, I'll move toward the "open" nudist. I'll only have to tell one person and within a week or two, everyone I know will also know.

Hmm..I guess I would be a semi-closet nudist. Or is that a semi-open?
I really dont hide the fact that I like to be without clothing, but I don't tell the world either. Some of my friends know.
Of course only being a home nudist doesnt really prompt many discussions about nudism.

I'm only open about it to certain people. I'm open about it to new people I meet. I told Peggy Sue I was a nudist, and alot of other stuff too. She said that she could "never" (famous last words) be a nusist or go to a nude beach, but she liked everything else about me, therefore, when we talk I usually stick to topics other than nudism. On the other hand many of my older freinds dont know.

Interesting responces. Although I am quite open I do know when and where to say something but let someone make a totaly uninformed statement on what nudisum is and I'll be right there to set them stright. One lady upon learning we were nudist said "gee I never met real live nudist before" to which I responded "oh you have met dead ones?" She found it funny.

Tom, I usually tell people that we're all nudists to some degree, that we all bathe or shower w/o clothes. Nudists take it a bit further, maybe a lot further :)
I also tell them that the only real difference between nudists and others is that after a large meal, we've no belt to losen.
I would probably have responded...you mean you are not aware if you've ever met a nudist. Since we are a cross-section of the population, you never know if you have met one or not.

I'd consider myself semi-open, as I have some friends & relatives who know and some that I don't tell. Some of the people I work with know, as I've made no secret where we've spent our Caribbean vacations (Once I mentioned that I was going to Grand Lido Braco, which isn't a nude resort, but has a nude section. A young lady I worked with who had been there the year before said, "Do you know that there's a nude beach there?", I asked her if it was a nice one & she blushed a little & then replied "Yes"). She hadn't suspected that I might really be interested in the nude beach. I agree that you may have met quite a few nudists & never realized it, since even nudists spend much of the time clothed unless they live at a nudist resort & either work there or are retired.

I would like to be more open about me being a nudist. So far i guess Im in the category of a closet nudist. Not that I choose to be nude only indoors, but because there are no designated nude outdoor places near my place...even my state or country for that matter, as nudism is not something that's acceptable here in Malaysia (bummer...). If I do go outdoors, it would have to be very, very secluded, and there lies the problem of accessibility. Futhermore there are very few of us, so it is quite challenging, but we try and make the best out of our situation and manage with what we have.
Always looking for an excuse to be nude...

I am also from a small town and I feel the same about letting people know that I am a nudist. I am also quite active in the local small church that is old and very conservative. I figure I would be bait if people knew at this point in time. Maybe as time goes on things will change but I'm not banking on it. I like the way Pilot deals with the situation.

A couple years ago my wife and I saw this saying on some pool deck decorations at a local flea market, "We don't SkinnyDip anymore, now we ChunkyDunk." We thought that was pretty funny and fit us closer than "skinny".
We purchased one of those life rings you see on board a ship from a catalog and we were able to personalize it, so we had "ChunkyDunkin Resort" written on the life ring and hung it on our wall in our backyard.
We had all my side of the family over a couple of weeks ago for a BBQ and swim and they all commented on the ring and laughed at the "Chunky Dunkin'" meaning. Both my wife and I told them all in separate conversations that we don't skinnydip anymore, we now chunkydunk and no one made any comments, they all smiled or chuckled and said "that's great".
So I think now I would have to change my original post to say we are definately out of the closet with my side of the family.

I am definitely open about being a nudist. I feel it is important to be so if we ever expect to achieve any degree of acceptance by society at large, such as equal access to public lands for recreation. I believe if all of the nudists came out of the closet, people would realize their misconceptions about nudism are generally false.
