It's a warm day in June and you are eight years old when your parents call you and your sibling into the house and inform you that for the past few weeks they have been visiting a nudist camp and tommorrow they want it to be a family adventure. They explain that when you get there they have camping, a swimming pool, pond and other outdoor activities and lots of kids they say the only difference from other outing that you have gone to is that you do it without clothes. You also have the option of going for the weekend to Aunt Martha, what do you think you would do and why.

I thought this would be entertaining, I for one think I would go I was pretty shy as a eight year old but when I was that age I enjoyed reading true detective magazines and first discovered nudism when I read a article about it in one of them. I had also stripped with other friends while playing in the woods and think I like most kids would adapt pretty fast to the idea. I think it would have been kind of wierd being nude in front of my sibling or running into a student or teacher from school but in the end I think it would have been pretty cool because from what i've read about the early sixties ( my era at age 8) those were the innocent times of nudism.

Hi SailAwayBob,

I'm afraid Aunt Martha would have to wait another time to have a visit with me. Given my cheerful and curious personality when I was a boy, I would have gone to the nudist event. I saw the sunnier side of life back then, and would have welcomed the chance to go nude, especially with my parents' approval and participation.

One advantage I had back in those days was being completely oblivious to negative reasoning and opinions of other people. If I were in my teens, I believe Aunt Martha would have a grateful visitor, because of my building self-consciousness and feelings of insecurity. My obliviousness was well-punctured by then.

Now I am back to being more oblivious to my social surroundings again. A lot of living probably put me back to my younger version of thinking and feeling again, and I love it!!

Fascinating question, Bob!

Change this to 18 instead of 8, and my answer would be quite different :)

Warmskin and Honeysuckle i probably agree, why did and do teenagers feel so awkward nude, at seventh grade through high school back then you took showers after pe class, the first week was wierd at first but than it seemed no big deal. Would it have been different at a nudist club mixing the gender, don't know and never will but that may be it because my kids were raised as nudist and they would drag us there but when they reached the teen years you couldn't drag them. I like to think I would have gone even as a teenager.

I may be observing in the dark (that has never stopped me, though), but I do wonder if sexuality might be a factor in young folks' mind when it comes to possibly visiting a nudist facility. Perhaps the teenager might be caught in making the transition to a complete adult, both socially and sexually, might not be the foundation for mingling with nude people.

It might even be a sort of "cocoon" time for teenagers, as they make the transformation from child to adult. With their raging hormones, zits, educational processes, trying to find some sanity, finding their own cultural identity, doing a lot of test messaging, etc., visiting a nudist resort might not be high on their list of things to do.

Once they find their own sense of security, it will be all right to do some of that offbeat stuff like visit nudist resorts with those "older people." Also, teens seem to find security in conforming to other teens. Nudism is not conformity. Wearing the coolest clothing is more their focus. You can't make a fashion statement with no clothes on.

Just more thoughts on the loose, in my mind.

Zits, now its coming back to me those teenage years, what did I ever do with that cocoon. But your right Warmskin there is a lot of thing swirling around in teenagers, I guess as time and age pass by we tend to forget the wierd stuff. Make you wonder if you would do it again if you had the chance.

You, Honeysuckle, and I suspect at least 80% of the population.

At age eight I would have found nothing daunting about the excursion to the nude camp. In fact, I think one of the summer camps I went to at about that age had swimming in the river without bothering about suits. But add five years, let hormones accumulate, throw in some acne...I barely wanted to be seen in class, let alone in all my naked splendor.
Add another ten years, and it changed back again - maybe the hormones were more balanced then.

(Ahem) the early to late sixties, and into the seventies, a good number of those of us who found nature more appealing than corporate struggle were convinced that simpler living was a great idea. "Innocent" was not a true descriptor, but a certain casual attitude toward customary practices was more than tolerated, it was encouraged.
If you can find an old copy of LIFE magazine from August 1969, you can see from the Woodstock coverage that there were a few of us skinny-dipping in the pond near the concert site. LIFE was somewhat discreet in what they published, but you can tell. The following month, after the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the clean-up crew volunteers included a large contingent from a Vermont commune who did their stint of picking up the litter across the grounds while working on their tans - no tan lines, of course. Around that time we had a small house shared among five of us, without A/C of course (poverty), and most summers we wore little or nothing around the house. Though nothing of it, and just remembered to dress when going out.
Things slowly changed by, oh, '75 or so.

Dum vivimus, vivamus!

I was introduced to nudism when I was 10. I had a best friend who had a nudist family, they however did not let me know for fear that I might not understand. When he told me about it i thought it was cool. They invited me to go camping with them however I had to get permission from my parents. My father could care less my mother was a different story. After my mother met my friends parents she gave in. Becoming a nudist was the best thing to happen to me then, I have been a nudist ever since. I became more sure of myself and had a greater self estem. I found myself and no longer felt I had to be someone everyone else thought I should be. My son just turnrd 12 this month and he has expressed a great desire to go to a nudist camp this summer. he has grown so much in maturity and self pride since joining the nudist life style I could not imagine taking that away from him

Shadow wolf you are one of the lucky ones, what always make me think of this subject is my mother when she learned years ago that we were raising our children as nudist had stated that when we were kids nudist friends of theirs in Michigan would invite them all the time to join them at the nudist (colony) club they belonged to. I know my Dad he would have had no problem with this it would have been my Mom who would have denied us this experience. I may have missed my youth as a nudist but sure I have made up for it as a adult by visiting clubs, beaches, lakes and rivers and enjoying a hike in the woods.

Actually, I think I'm in the 20%, Old Hippie ...

When I was little, there's no way I would be nude in public. But by the time I was 18, I was ... well ... kinda wild. I went skinny-dipping with boys several times my senior year in high school. When I tell my daughters about things like that, they laugh uproariously, but I'm pretty sure they don't follow in my footsteps. Thankfully, they're much more mature than I was ... :)

I would go with my family even though they weren't nudists. Besides what if aunt martha was one of those annoying aunts who had to pinch you all the time.

Hiya

A couple of the responses in here reminded me of a line I read in a short story a couple of years back. That story has since been incorporated into a novel (it was a sort of "linking" story between two books and so was relevant enough to be part of the main plot) that I've been reading for the past few days. That's why it stuck in my memory.

Anyway, the quote is "There are four teenage males running along the sand, lanky and awkward, suffering that phase nature has the decency to hide inside a cocoon in other species". Definitely true.

I think that at most times in my life, I'd have gone along. At some points in my life, I'd have had reservations, but I'd still have gone. And at a couple of times, I'd never have been far from a towel - have either of my parents see me with the stiffy that would have been inevitable during a couple of traumatic years? Yeah... definitely would have needed the towel.

I went to summer camp in the mid-1960's and there was plenty of skinny-dipping. It was co-ed and it was a no big deal thing. It was so innocent and fun at the same time. I still have a warm spot for the hippies that ran the place.
