Our son is 18 months old and obviously not out of diapers. We want to take him to our local nude beach, but we're not sure whether or not he should go naked. Should we keep him in his diaper? Or should we bring baggies instead for the inevitable accidents?

The biggest concerns I would have, as mentioned by others here are: Minimize sun exposure using shade and sunscreen! Their skin in tender and thin. I’d forgotten but re-learned when giving my grandson a bath that anything more than lukewarm to me feels scalding to him. I’d not be excessive about length of time at the beach either. On and around the water and sand, there is a lot of reflected light bouncing around at all angles.
As far as the diaper dilemma, after they’ve done the big one and get cleaned up, you’re usually good to go for a while without a diaper. And if we get a little urine on the sand, we’ll just have to live with that.

The sun is on its way out again! You remember summer – barbecues, beaches and pool parties? If you're looking out the window right now and watching the cat blow across the yard, put your skepticism aside. Now is the time to start stocking up on a few things you'll want to have on hand to get out and enjoy the summer with Baby.

On friday when I was down at the beach lifeguarding a mother and her 2 year old came down to take a look as the father was at a meeting. there were no plans for swimming but the girl did deside to go in (which she was not known to do at other beaches). Our beach is not a C/O beach, however the mother removed all the girls clothing except for diper and let her run around.

I think when it comes to beaches and little ones being nude, the consern should be the same as having a little one run around without dipers while not potty trained.

Of course every child is different and, at 18 months it may be a little early, but the diaper gives them a safe place to do their business. I'm sure you have seen kids that will find a corner or almost hide from site to do their business in their diaper. When they reach that point they are able to go to the potty but if they have a diaper they don't have to. They will have to be closely supervised at first and the no diaper will give the parent an extra incentive to watch them closer also. I'm sure there will be accidents but that's why outdoor activities would be perfect opportunities to start with.

We never did it with our kids cause we didn't think of it. It was after our kids were past that point that we heard of this but I've talked to others that swear by it. Sorry I don't have any details but I'm sure you can figure it out if you wish.

It helps with potty training because once they realize that going pee/poop without a diaper is going to make a big mess, they will try to avoid making that mess again if they can.

When my daughter was potty training, the nudity definitely helped her progress. On days when she had a diaper, she had no trouble doing her business in her diaper, but on the nude days she would use the potty much more often.

Of course we have hardwoord floors, so we didn't have the carpet issue to deal with.

To answer the original post...In sunscreen, in the shade as much as possible, and nude as long as you don't mind the possible mess and other people's reactions to the mess.

Heh. I knew that they're natural nudists... the only reason he's not as naked as we are around the house is to save the carpet. ;)

But how is it supposed to help with potty training?

There was a couple with baby sitting next to me last year at Playalinda. The Mom took great care to keep the child in the shade; which made sense. Between diaper changes, she would let the child stay nude for a while before putting another diaper back on. She did take her kid to the water every so often, but very briefly and only to dip toes in the ocean. I think her routine made good parental sense; a good bit of nudity but very limited exposure to the sun.

My main concern is sunscreen. That's really young skin. As for accidents, we're talking about sand. no biggie. Messes should be easy to clean.
