Feb 28, 2010 - Quickie update on nude sunbathing on the Maya Riviera. We stayed at Royal Haciendas in Playa del Carmen; standard time share and magnificent! There is one clothing optional resort – Hidden Beach Resort – south of Playa del Carmen that is very pricey ($300/night/pp or a day pass is $100/day/pp). The best advice was in Frommer’s Cancun, Cozumel & the Yucatan 2007. The beach in front, and just to the north, of Azulik is clothing optional; just south of Tulum. Not very crowded the two days we were there. People were nude, topless and clothed. We parked at Papaya Playa (beach hotel/restaurant/bar) just up the way, had a great lunch at their seaside bar and walked 50 yards to the nude beach. From Playa del Carmen it took us about an hour via our rental car. From Cancun add another 30-45 minutes. NCNatural@gmail.com if you want more specifics. |

Hello,
We have been to Tulum, Mexico many times and it is a great area!!!
We rented a private home and were nude the whole week.We go with 3 other couples and have a great time.We are going back June 14, 2010,but this time we are going further south to the Costa Maya.We rented a house for about 850.00 for the week!!! Beautiful 2 story beachfront.We are so looking to nude beach walks,and being nude all week. |

^^2nd this. Great little beach.
There's a bit of surprise from the Textiles as most of them don't realize its a CO beach. (It's not official, but it's getting more popular and spreading further north.)
Who knows how this will turn out when the more mainstream big companies move in to open resorts, but it's been CO for many, many years now. Here's to many more years more. |

As mentioned in another post; Azulik and Cabanas Copal resorts (right next to each other and owned by the same company) are some great Eco Resort options in the Tulum area that allow nudity on the beach and in the resort area. Tulum is a great little town less the 2 hrs south of Cancun via a real nice modern hwy. Well worth the drive if you are looking for some real nice nude beach options.
Here is our review from a recent family trip down there.
We stayed at Cabanas Copal in Feb 2010 and had a great time. We picked Copal because they are one of the few resorts that advertise a clothing optional beach in the Tulum area and also allow children. It's just downright wrong to be required to wear soggy swimsuits when at a great beach in the Caribbean, so Copal was a clear choice for us. We also wanted to stay at an eco resort without TV's and other distractions. We found Copal to be so refreshing after spending a night at one of the mega resorts in Cancun. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and the international vibe. We only wish there were many more clothing optional eco resorts like Copal in the world.
We stayed in the family sea view quad that had one king sized bed and a bunk bed for the kids. We found this cabana to be very cool. Loved all the rock work on the floors, counters, etc and the groovy shower. We were prepared for the lack of electricity and brought some flashlights and a small battery powered lantern. We brought a piece of rope so we could hang the lantern from the ceiling and this worked great. We also brought a few of the headlamps for reading at night. We brought one for each of the kids and they loved using them in the evening. The candles made for a real nice ambiance as well. We woke up each morning to the sounds of the jungle birds and the waves crashing on the beach. The sun rises were incredible. We would grab some coffee at 7:00 AM each day and walk the beach, then read for a bit until the kids woke up. What a great way to start the day!!
The nude beach at Copal was absolutely wonderful. Nice white sand with warm blue water that was real nice for skinny dipping, even in Feb. There were various other nude couples on the beach, along with some happy children playing in the water and even a few seniors really enjoying their golden years. What can you possibly complain about while lounging on a wonderful Caribbean beach rubbing suntan lotion on your wife while sharing the beach with other beautiful naked women from South America, Europe, Canada and the US.
It was quite obvious that many of the clothed couples really wanted to join in on the nude beach experience, but were having a little trouble making the transition. The clothes would come off for a bit, then someone would walk by and the clothes would go back on.…this would occur several times then they would finally give in, get naked and just enjoy themselves.
The beach at Copal was connected to the beach at Papaya Playa to the north and it was possible to be nude on that beach as well. The combined beach was quite wide, possibly a 1/8 to 1/4 mile long or so. This was real nice for taking the longer clothes free walks to the north. To the south was the Azulik couples only resort owned by the same company as Copal. Azulik looked very nice and we can't wait to try it out when we are in Tulum without the youngins. They have palapas overlooking the beach with their own sun decks, outdoor beds and even an outdoor tub. They share the beach with Copal.
The service at the beach bar and the restaurant was great (Jose-Barracuda, Polo, etc were wonderful). The beach bar crew really went out of their way to serve us mixed drinks, Coronas and lunch items down on the beach. The staff was great with the kids, even playing soccer with them on the beach in the evening. Both of our boys really bonded with them during our stay. We have always found the people in Mexico to be so friendly and open and we always enjoy their company.
The kids spent most of the day in the water either body surfing or snorkeling. We brought a few small inflatable rafts and tubes with us, along with fins, masks and snorkels. This worked great for providing plenty of options for the kids. We also visited a few of the ruins and the Sian Ka'an bio reserve down the road to mix things up a bit and take in some of the great local history. The ruins are awesome and the bio reserve is a great place. The only downside to the reserve is the amount of trash on the beautiful beaches. We heard a lot of it washed up during the last hurricane. It would be great to organize a beach clean up when down there next. The reserve has lots of wonderful remote beaches that are also great for nude exploration. It would just be nice if we could somehow get them cleaned up. Might be time to organize an eco-nude beach clean up party down there with other nature loving nudist.
Overall we had a great stay at Copal and can't wait to return with some of our friends. We know this type of resort is not for everyone and that is probably a good thing as it keeps the high maintenance people at the mega resorts where they belong. That leaves these great little eco resorts like Copal for the more adventurous and open minded folks out there that want to experience nature and not be shielded from it.
If you have never tried a nude beach you absolutely should. Once you try it you will wonder why you ever waited so long. If you're one of the shy couples just find a more remote spot on the beach to ease into it. You will not regret it and will never go back to soggy swimsuits again… If you love the outdoors, nature and camping you will likely love Copal. If you can't live without all the conveniences of the mega resorts in Cancun you will likely not fit in at Copal.
I’m sure we could have found some things to complain about, but heck, you’re at an eco resort in Mexico and you just need to be a bit more flexible and open minded. Once you hit the nude beach the small stuff just seems completely irrelevant… So go with an open mind and give it a try.
BTW- All the open minded folks out there that really enjoy clothing optional resorts like Copal should try to visit them whenever they can to show their support and make sure they are there for us in the future!! There are definitely not enough resorts out there brave enough to offer nude beaches and we really need to let them know they are appreciated. It’s easy to be a run of the mill textile resort, but resort owners really need to go out on a limb to support the clothing optional concept these days (especially around the many closed minded Americans that visit this area). We just want to let Copal know that it’s really appreciated that they have maintained a clothing optional beach despite all the pressure to do otherwise!!

We have made a couple trips to the area, the latest first two weeks of March and stayed at the Grand Palladium Both times we made day trips to Azulik near Tulum to the nude beach. It's a great spot 30 minutes by colectivo and a although the Palayas restaurant is now a sushi bar.
While staying at the Palladium, we stayed at the Royal suites. We had a top floor private balacony that we caught some "nude" sun on in the mornings.
