Not a New Year's goes by without a visit. We live in Atlanta and look forward to visiting the beach each time. Can't wait till next year. Media Release November 23, 2003
On Saturday Night, November 22, 2003, SFFB/FNA held an Appreciation Dinner for Retired Miami-Dade County Lifeguard Captain Marcus Breece in Hollywood, Florida, on the water at Giorgio's Mediterranean Restaurant.
Captain Marcus Breece was honored for his professional leadership and management of Haulover Beach Park's Lifeguard Service, always showing respect for the Naturists and their designated clothing-optional beach, and always having an open door policy for the Naturist beach users to discuss issues.
After 26 years of service, with 12.5 years of those watching over an estimated 8.5 visitors to the Naturist Beach alone, as well as the rest of the shoreline, Marcus Breece was honored with a SFFB crystal plague, inscribed with words of appreciation, a TNS World Guide to Nude Beaches and a Gift Certificate for dinner for two at The Palm Restaurant in Bay Harbor Islands.
Capt. Breece also received a Proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County naming November 22, Marcus Breece Day. The Proclamation was obtained by SFFB through the offices of County Commissioner Sally Heyman.
This is probably the first time in American Naturism that a Naturist association was able to obtain a Proclamation from a governing body of commissioners.
The legacy that Capt. Breece left behind was a highly trained, well equipped lifeguard service with several professional lifeguard supervisors in place. He also oversaw the transfer of the Lifeguard Service from the Park Department to the Fire Department.
Over 40 Naturists and Lifeguard Supervisors joined in the accolades and wishing Capt. Breece a joyous retirement.

RE: Understanding Naturists and their Politics
South Florida Free Beaches/Florida Naturist Association is a Naturist organization who's mission is to educate the public and public officials and others on the benefits of designated clothing-optional facilities on public lands. Our goal is to obtain new locations and to maintain existing ones.
In executing our mission, we have made an effort to develop friendships with elected officials and support those that support our mission. Most of these officials prefer that we keep their support of our mission in confidence.
Our mission is a narrow one, but, it supports the preservation and expansion of parks and is opposed to development.
Our support of parks has not found other pro park and environmental groups supportive of our mission. Example: John D. McArthur, the owner of much of Singer Island was a Naturist. The section of Singer Island that was used by naturists was owned by him and he hung out with them. It was Naturist leaders that had requested that he give the land that is now McArthur State Park to Florida for a State Park.
When the land was donated to the state, it was with the understanding that a section would be preserved for Naturist use. After the state got the land and McArthur was dead, the state reneged on the Naturist set-aside. Not one environmental or pro-park group came to the assistance of the Naturists.
In 1992, when an out of control Park Supt. at Canaveral National Seashore had over 119 Naturists, wrongfully cited for lewd and lascivious behavior, while sunbathing, not one pro-park group or environmental organization came to our aid. In fact, the local park group supported the Park Supt. We got all cases dismissed, on our own.
In 1994, 95, 96, 97, 98, when bills were introduced in the Florida Legislature that would have criminalized the human body, while nude and on a designated beach, not one pro-park or environmental group would help us fight the bill.
Two years ago, the Tampa Area Naturists appealed to the Pinellas County Park board for a designated beach at Fort DeSoto Park. The local park group spoke out in opposition to the request, even though a larger presence of Naturists in the park would have given strength to pro-park voices. Not one local park or environmental group spoke up on behalf of the Naturists.
In the case of Canaveral and Fort DeSoto Parks, the Naturists would have added hundreds of people to the support park projects. The small "Friends of" groups that are often ignored by park management would rather control their little "nothings" than be part of a successful "something."
Naturists, as an isolated pro naturalist group, has been forced to plow their own fields and develop their own friends. Sometimes our elected friends may only be interested in our issue because it is so basic to Civil and Human Rights, the Declaration of Independence and Constitutional Law. Other times they may put Peoples Rights ahead of the rights of certain plants, birds and environmental issues. However, they are our friends and more times than not, they are the only ones we have.
SFFB/FNA will continue to support the efforts of the Urban Environment League, because it is a great organization, has a lot of accomplishments and has been supportive of our goals. The UEL, as a supporter, is probably the only one that Naturists have in Florida and that is appreciated.
But sometimes we may call people our friends who are also friends of developers. We can't control how elected officials behave, and some may even be bastards. But, if they are "our bastards" then we consider them our friends and ourselves lucky.

I consider FNA to be the most innovative organization out there and I wish the others would take a look at the great things they have done. AANR is living in the past and losing members because they haven't kept up with the times.
