What are your favorite home remedies?

Over here on the Nocturnal Leg Cramps thread, some interesting remedies were discussed, and a further discussion of simple cures may be helpful.

Echinacea
In our household, echinacea is our weapon of choice to address 90% of any health problems. It is a general immune system booster, to be used for durations of less than 10 days. Often you'll find a cold will resolve itself much faster than without. We use it as a preventative when traveling or around large crowds of people. We'll take it whenever a recurrent cough or scratchy throat begins to shows up, or for anything that would require a boosted immune system response. Your mileage may vary, but we use 4 or 5 capsules up to four times a day. Be aware that the root of the plant is much more powerful, as opposed to the aerial parts which are more commonly sold. You can buy echinacea in any corner drug store or supermarket. This wikipedia link provides more information.

Colloidal Silver
For severe sunburn damage, burns, cuts or abrasions of the skin, or eye infections, silver is our remedy of choice. We actually prepare it at home with distilled water and a kit bought on the Internet consisting of 9 volt batteries, alligator clips and pure silver wire. You'll find it in any health food store. For the eyes we'll mix it with sterile saline, since distilled water is an irritant to the eyes. They even make socks and washing machines using silver to eliminate bacteria. This oligodynamic effect, or self disinfection, is one of the reasons silverware is made from silver, and doorknobs from brass. From wikipedia, "Silver has proven antimicrobial activity that includes antibiotic-resistant bacteria." How cool is that. Government regulation has been unfriendly to colloidal silver sellers.

Do you have a favorite home remedy? Add it to this thread. Links would be helpful.

Cheapskate indeed - I resemble that reMark! I went to a lot of trouble to keep you on the gold (coin) standard, Fort Knox is hard to get into!

Oh, the hiccups remedy. Haven't had them for years, so I don't know if it would work. I was taught to sip water from the opposite side of the glass - so your upper lip goes over the outside of the the far side of the glass. That worked, and no soggy paper towels - just shirts (that was in the pre-N days). I think it was psychological - once you worked out what to do, you had forgotten about the hiccups.

I'm waiting for my wife to try MrsAz's hiccup cure. I don't remember the last time I had hiccups, but my wife gets them every couple of months or so.

Not fancy, but a surefire cure for hiccups. All you need is a 4-6 oz glass of water and a napkin/paper towel. Put the napkin over the glass of water and then drink the water through the napkin. Works 100% of the time! Guaranteed!! Try it next time...I do take donations instead of thanks.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Yes! I use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for toothpaste, partly to avoid the fluoride.

Did you know fluoride, bromide and chlorine (all halides) drive the iodine out of your system? It replaces it, and takes up the iodine receptors, rendering them useless.

So you're suffering from bromide, fluoride and chlorine poisoning, along with iodine deficiency. Brutal.

No wonder our thyroids aren't generally happy. The thyroid regulates body fat and hormone levels, did you know?

They used to add iodine to table salt, which solved the problem of goiter in the great lakes area several decades ago. Then to save money (or screw up our health for profit) they took out the iodine from most products. They removed it from bread and today use bromine instead. Did anyone tell you bromine was poisonous? Bromine is in Gatorade. Brominated water, look on the label. It messes up your hormones, causing sickness and weight problems.

So to get your thyroid back in shape requires controlling the halides getting into your system, and providing sufficient iodine to replace it. It takes many months, but if done right, you can put a drop of iodine on your skin and it will not be absorbed for 24 hours. Most peoples' skin will gobble it up in a couple of hours.

For an eye opener, search for iodine and cancer together.

Hydrogen peroxide. Use it from many things including teeth whitening. Costs pennies and kills germs everywhere.

Garlic, honey and Apple cider vinegar for when you start feeling a cold coming on. I may try joekar's approach and try it with local honey.

I thought I'd add a general outline of my private health care approach.

Removal of toxins (halides and heavy metals)
Remedy of lifelong mineral deficiencies
Parasite cleanse
Intestinal/colon cleanse
Liver/gall bladder flush
Herbal supplements
High quality liquid multivitamin
Fish oil, twice daily
Twice daily handful of various vitamins/herbs
Iodine therapy
Several 20-60 minute walks every week
Lots of rest, nap whenever feasible
Eliminate wheat products from diet

All of this costs me about $100 a month. What's your health care costing you?

I'll have to admit, after seeing myself getting rapidly older in my late 40s to early 50s, to the point where I could hardly get off the couch without my heart stopping, it's all resolved.

I really feel I'm getting younger every year. Body aches gone, energy coming back, heart beat regular, blood pressure coming down, no sick days, discomfort of all types disappearing.

I haven't touched a pharmaceutical in several years. Not one pill. The last time I saw a doctor I asked why my potassium was so low, and why that wouldn't be a factor in the high blood pressure I was experiencing. The blank look on her face and her inability to provide any answer spoke volumes.

It takes decades to mess up our bodies almost to the breaking point. But you can help your body correct itself. And it will, if given a chance.

Those of you that believe only a doctor can give this advice, please totally disregard these comments as they are not for you.

A piece of ginger in the form of a crystallized square, some fresh pulverized ginger added to a drink, or some ginger tea can be used as a stomach soother or as a pretreatment to prevent sea sickness.

We always try to buy a local honey from the Farmer's market, and take a tablespoon of it daily. I read that local honey is supposed to help your body with any pollen type allergies. We've been doing this for 2 years now, and haven't had to purchase any allergy meds. So, it would seem the honey is doing something. Vinegar is also something we use a lot of, from wiping down a counter with it instead of Lysol, to using it in the washer instead of laundry softener. (And, no, the clothes don't smell lime pickles after they dry!)

Don't know if the practice is still in vogue, but I recall that very dilute silver nitrate solution was placed in babys' eyes to prevent infections.
