However, it seems Beijing is really moving with the times. The country, which until the early 1990s was known for its traditions and forced demagogy, may believe it or not, open its first beach for nudes.
According to The Straits Times, the idea for such an exclusive beach cropped up several days ago after a Chinese man saw eight college girls swimming nude near a beach.
The idea struck a chord with the management of the Linan West Zhejiang Beach Area in China's eastern Zhejiang Province.
It put up a board there, which read, "Nude Swimming Area". But it was not as simple as one thought. The issue raised concerns among the masses who thought it would lead to declining moral standards. The board was removed following protests from visitors, but it reappeared later.
The customer service department of the beach confirmed that the nudist beach would be officially opened to the public on Thursday, thus intensifying the protests.
Opinion, however, continues to be divided over the issue. (ANI) |

Posted - 08/12/2004 : 08:10:46 AM This would be an unpercedent move in China. But with its economy and westernization moving forward, I hope this will become a reality. I am sure most nude westerners would be excited to try out a place like this in the orient--it sounds adventurous.

Posted - 08/10/2004 : 12:18:34 PM From smh.com.au China's first nudist colony fails to take off August 10, 2004
Chinese people eager to bare all in public will have to wait to disrobe after local outrage shelved the opening of the country's first nudist colony.
The colony was originally due to open to the public at a woodland park in China's eastern Zhejiang province on Thursday.
But the plan was put on hold after it sparked a furore among prudish locals, park spokeswoman Wang Xiaoting said on Monday.
The move would have broken new ground in a country where sex is seldom discussed in public.
"It's caused a lot of debate," Ms Wang said.
"Many of the local people say it's disgusting and don't want it."
The park hit on the idea after a group of eight bold female university students stripped and went for a dip in the park's river but were discovered by security guards, she said.
Park officials saw the opportunity after their blushes faded.
"I don't know why they did it here," she said, laughing.
"I suppose it could be a good business opportunity for us though."
The planned nudist area lies along a river in a valley 80 kilometres from the eastern city of Hangzhou.
"We do still want to do it, once related regulations are sorted out. I would say there are as many people who support the scheme as oppose it," she said.
State media said there was no law banning nude swimming or sunbathing in China, though no one had so far been known to have tried to set up the kinds of nudist beaches common in Europe.
