Is there any online photos of the nude beach called Pirate's Cove? I believe that is the correct name and its near Pismo Beach or near San Lous Obispo on the central ca. coast. I heard that it can be a bit of a hike to get to it but that it is a nice beach.

Several years ago ... we had our very own Mayor of our beach, "The Beach Mom" Marianna Handler, a lifelong nudist and advocate for nudism. Until many of us gave her donations for her time, gas and paper she'd buy to make leaflets and flyers to give out to new people on the beach, she did it all on her own. She'd also cruise the beach and talk to anyone she hadn't seen before and talk to them about the beach, beach behavior/etiquette, she stop overt sexual activity, she met with the rangers and lifeguards and had an amazing rapport with just about everyone. On occasion, she'd be confronted with someone that would give her about 5 seconds of guff, then about 10 of us would converge on the jerk and that was the end of his day on the beach!

She got square in my case on day. We were fairly new to the beach but she'd seen us a few times before and had already labeled us as "regulars." Some illicit activity was happening, within site, and we weren't sure how to handle that. We talked for a few minutes and before I could get up ... she was scolding the offenders. When she was done with them ... she started on me! hahahahahaha I deserved it, sort of. She apologized after we'd explained that it was really only our 3rd or 4th time and weren't sure how to handle it. Well ... that's all it took. She went and grabbed her blanket and spent the rest of the day talking with us and had me shadow her on her walks up and down the beach so I "could see how it's done."

Not many people will do that, nowadays. She's left the state and is still involved in naturism but her health keeps her closer to home, these days. Some of us can't be on the beach everyday and it takes a continuous effort to combat these jerks. I've heard all the arguments about single guys and that they aren't the only ones who harrass and make women feel uncomfortable. But Doc's right ... I counted no less than a dozen guys that acted like jerks, went out of their way to walk behind the women on the beach to get a good look at their butts or them laying on their backs, walk zigzag on the beach ensuring to pass every blanket with a female laying on it and still, with her sign, that young college female had to wave off almost ALL of them. I guess they couldn't read.

There needs to be a conscious effort from each and every decent nudist guy and woman to speak up when there is something wrong going on at our beaches. We continue to lose our beaches more and more because of these jerks and there could be times when those people could have been run off if someone had spoken up, but like with many things ... many people just don't want to get involved.

Interesting posts. Kudos to FireProf for an act of chivalry, and for having the brass to approach the the assorted textiles to solicit their opinions. I share his dismay at peoples' reluctance to intervene. And how sad that a woman has to post a Garbo-esque "I want to be alone" sign in self-defense.

Sailawaybob is spot on. This puts the "Resorts versus Beaches" debate in context. Certain frequent flyers on this forum claim to hate resorts because of their petty rules and discrimination against single men, but the situation described by FP - women getting swarmed or photographed by (guess who?) single men - illustrates precisely why the resorts have their rules. It's almost never single women causing the problems, is it?

Personally, Ms. ND and I prefer a beach rather than a pool. I guess that's why we appreciate beach resorts like Club Orient and Paya Bay so much. They have great beaches where women can feel reasonably secure. (I just wish it didn't cost a fortune to go there!) Even Wreck Beach in Vancouver, while not totally immune to bad behavior, seems relatively safe thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers. We just can't seem to get it together in the US. Too bad.

There were several other guys around ... but only me and one other guy seemed to be on "lookout." That is one of the things that just got under my skin with our beach. TOO many regulars didn't do ANYTHING.

It was obvious this young woman wanted to be left alone and placed herself away from everyone. If I had moved to sit closer ... it would have only made her feel comfortable til the idiots moved away and then I would need to move again. Tha't not what I go to the beach for but someone has to do this. The more real nudists do this ... the less these idiots will venture down and think they can get away with it. They will get away with it until we all step up to the plate and take a swing at keeping our beaches free from perv's, voyeurs and objectionable activity ... but sometimes ... some nudists are just as bad as the idiots for not saying or doing anything.

i guess thats why ladies feel a little more comfortable at a resort, i've seen a few times where management would throw someone out for being to friendly. at the beach ladies don't have much protection unless they have husband or bf along i don't really ever see a single female at the beach, sad that they can't go and be left alone. and as for cameras they are everywhere, the nude beach i visit has a boardwalk and there are always textiles there with binoculars and cameras, i also like how the textiles pass by four beach areas to get to the final beach - nude with limited parking to walk up and down the beach, i don't know why they don't make the whole beach clothing optional so we can have more parking spaces.
nudesunguy Posted - 05/17/2013 : 8:02:19 PM
Hmm, and there we have perhaps yet another reason why young women keep their clothes on at the beaches. A few years back my wife and daughter were with me at a beach and a guy sat down near us. I recognized him, and thought he was OK. As soon as I left for a walk he started secretly videotaping our daughter. I couldn't believe his nerve. A confrontation ensued, cops were called, etc., an ugly scene on a beautiful day. With the new technology, this happens a lot. And it all gets posted for world wide distribution immediately. So even if women are OK with being nude, many/most are not ok with their nude photos online, and therefore just say to hell with nudity. You'd think with all the full on porn online, mere nudity wouldn't motivate pervs, but that would be a naive assumption...

I didn't want to make that last post too long so I didn't add the positive interaction with a young female college student that was trying to enjoy a day on the beach without being hassled.

I was sitting by myself and a ways from most. Initially, people seem to like "lots" of space between them and others ... for whatever reason, so I try not to infringe on other's space. I watched the beach and saw this young woman, about 20-22 walking with all her stuff, trying to figure out where to place herself on the beach. There was a guy walking along the cliffs and at first ... I did not see the camera with the telephoto lens.

She found a spot and she no more layed out her blanket and the guys started to swarm and the guy with the camera took a spot against the cliffs. I was on lookout and got up and began to swat the flies away ... including the voyeur photographer. Got in one guys face and ran him off and then spoke to the Lifeguards about what they'd do if this young lady felt threatened. I was disappointed at their reply but they assured me if "she" told them she felt threatened, they'd do something.

I think I chaulked on up for the good guys that day. She was very appreciative and thanked me repeatedly. When I was leaving, I walked up to her and told her it was nice meeting her, she said the same and again thanked me for being there and watching out for her. She then said ... "I'll be leaving soon. Thanks for staying."

This young woman probably is a regular. She had a hand made sign that read ... "Please don't hit on me. I'm not interested. I just want to be alone." The sign had seen some use!

The "field research" went better than I thought and I think I'll continue to do more. Maybe ... I'll convince "some" of them that ... if they're gonna visit a nude beach, it's better and more fun if they join in!

Thanks for all the great responses, and FP, thank you for doing some field research. I think I shall steal your idea and do some myself this Memorial Day. The responses of the younger people were about what I expected. As I mentioned, they don't seem bothered by the nudity (except for the "creepy" older guys...which seems to be every single older guy, in their eyes), they just don't want to go nude themselves. I do agree part of the issue is body image hangups. I noticed the only two younger women I saw nude or topless the other day had very slim bodies; same for the guys. I guess the rest of them don't realize that when you are in your 20's your body looks the best it will EVER look. I wonder how much of this body uptightness is a reflection of the fashion industry, and/or the youth culture that refers to genitalia as "junk."

Doc, your comments about the hippy movement seem accurate. It's interesting the younger kids seem to embrace the pot-smoking part of the culture, but shun the nudity.

It's nice to hear that things are different in the Midwest. Let's hope the trend moves westward for a change. On the other hand, it's disheartening to learn that the beach is closed during the week because of illicit sex. This has often been a problem on nude beaches in the past; I'm wondering if the easy access to nude beach info online has exasperated it? A person used to have to really seek out nude beaches, now anybody can find one easily and arrange a hookup via Craig's list, etc. And let's face it, many people still have the notion that nude=sex.

FP, I commend you on asking those questions. We all get to learn a little bit from the feedback you've received.

To answer the question about "elsewhere in the country" is yes. Things appear to be different here in the Midwest.
When I first moved to Chicago and went to Mazo - that very following week end...I was quite literally stunned. Full nudity is about 90%. The male to female ratio is about 60/40. The age ratio (lower than 40 and higher than 40) is about 40/60. Mazo beach has a good amount of college students; they usually come in small groups and nudity among them is about 80%. Diversity is almost non-existent though compared to East Coast nude beaches.

Why is the nudist culture at Mazo so different? I think that primarily has to do with climate. Chicago is a little bit better; but Wisconsin has about 3-4 months of good nudist weather. On a good year. So there is a sense of urgency when it comes to outdoor nudity that may not exist in other parts of the country. People want to get nude as quickly and as long as possible.

The effect of the habitual beach goers being so emphatic about being nude is also part of what leads to the reason there is virtually no clothing-optionality at Mazo. Newbies arrive and see a beach almost entirely filled with completely nude people. Call it peer pressure or positive reinforcement; but it certainly has a strong bearing on their decision to just go nude. Reluctant newbies usually go to the far end of the beach and out of sight; thereby maintaining a predominance of nudity in the main area of the beach.

But that's not to say Mazo doesn't have issue too with illicit behavior. Those who keep up with nudist news know why it is now closed on weekdays.

Okay ... so, today I went to our nude beach. There was a good mixed crowd for a weekday. I found two groups of young people and decided to see why "they" were visiting a "nude" beach and remaining clothed.

The first group; 4 young females. They started out acting like 10 year olds, trying to strip each other. That stopped and two of the girls went topless. They played in the surf and then were joined by the third girl that remained in a bathing suit. I walked down the beach, passed them and the two topless girls began to giggle. On my way back, they looked at me, then talked to each other, then looked at me ... I decided to stop and ask: "HI, can I talk to you for a minute. I just have a couple of questions some of us are wondering about with young people on this beach." To my surprise, I was not told to "get lost you pervert!"

I asked them if they came to Black's Beach often. They said "yes." I said, "do you or did you know this is a traditionally nude use beach?" They again said .. "yes." I asked ... "I noticed you both were topless but won't go naked. Is there a reason?" One girl replied ... "why... is there a problem with being dressed here?" I replied ... "no, it's just that we have so few nude beaches in California and it seems that many of our "nude" beaches are being taken over by people that don't want to be nude."

They thought about it for a second and one of them said ... "actually, this is the closest beach to us. We don't usually get naked but we'll take off our tops once in a while but not get naked. We don't care if other people are naked, we just don't want to do it. Maybe we will another time but not right now."

The other group; A guy, his wife, their toddler and two other young women. He did the question answering. They were there because it was the closest beach to them as well. They "like the flat beach, they like that the nude people are friendly but the women don't like the "creepy" guys that are there to look at naked women." I told them "our" thoughts and concerns and they said that it depends on the day. If there's a lot of families and women on the beach, then they'll go naked but if not, like today, they just keep their suits on.

I'm thinking some of these kids have a lot more body image hangups than some of our hesitant/reluctant wives. The inquiry went better than I expected and so ... I'll ask a few more of these, clothed young adults on nude beaches, groups as I see them down at the beach.

I'd have to agree Doc. If you don't use it ... you lose it. It seems to be what's happening to our family, anyway. Three years ago ... they were apprehensive about going to Club Orient. The minute they left ... they were asking when they could return. For 3 years they've asked when they will be able to go back.

But lately, they've (kid and grandkids) have gotten a bit weird about simple nudity. My 10 y.o. grandson who is referred to as "my clone", when it comes to nudity, has kinda changed his tune. The two grandsons and I were in the same bathroom to take a shower before heading out for our Mother's Day dinner. The 10 y.o. kinda freaked cuz we were ALL in the bathroom together, naked. He finally got over it but ... that sure wasn't like him several months ago.

Our oldest, his mother, is still having problems getting her head around nudism and not equating it to sex. On the other hand ... our youngest is chomping at the bit to jump in completely but has other personal issues (separation) that could hinder that process when it comes to the children.

All we can do is continue to try and share some of this with them. The ol' ... "lead a horse to the trough but can't make him drink" senerio. That's what we will continue to do ... anyway. The oldest ... 13 ... she's OUT! hahaha

Troubling trends, to be sure. I wonder if we're not seeing the twilight of the Sixties (Hippiedämmerung?). Obviously the Sixties are long gone, but that decade had an extraordinary degree of influence on American cultural and behavioral norms. Personal freedom and expression, and a liberalism of a personal rather than political sort were promoted as a pushback against the perceived conformity of the Fifties. America got accustomed to seeing people doing crazy things ... like running around naked. Well ... the hippies are grandparents now and their influence is waning with each passing generation. Statisticians might call this a 'regression toward the mean'. Things have gotten more conservative in many aspects of life.

Another thought: Boomers make up the vast majority of nudists these days, and we learned our attitude back when we were young and daring. The idea of our parents visiting a nude beach was beyond ridiculous. But now the potentially 'young and daring' see nudism as something their parents or grandparents did. Maybe it's the sight of us naked old farts that turning them off.

This is sad news but seems inline with what we see on some of the other nude beaches here in So. Cal. San Onofre and Blacks have seen their fair share of textiles inhabiting the nude section of these beaches. At times, maybe 3 outta 10 people would follow suit after a brief period but most remained clothed until they got their eyes full and then they left. With the closure of San Onofre, to nude use, most of those beach regulars took refuge at Black's.

Black's is across the street from UCSD. Though I'm not considered a "regular" on this beach, yet, the times I have visited, I've seen lots and lots of college students come down to the beach and run. Some even come down and take pictures of themselves flashing or stripping and if I were a betting man ... I'd say they were sending those pics to their friends, boyfriends ... etc. This beach, as well as San Onofre are much larger than Pirates Cove. My wife and I visited PC quite a while back. So ... with regards to the amount of textiles taking over a nude beach, I can only speculate that Blacks and San O may have as many textiles invading our space but they were spread out quite a bit and not as noticible. At any rate ... it's not a good thing when the so few nude beaches we do have, are now being visited and taken over by textiles.

With regards to Bonny Doon; I was in the service when I first happened upon BD. Back then ... the college students made up a great deal of the nude beach goers. Spent many a day and night on the beach with college students and made some friends. When I was able to revisit BD with my wife, after my discharge from the service, we found that it was like most other nude beaches we visited ... the same demographic as you'd see at a club or resort and the college students numbers had dwindled.

Is it any wonder why some of these college students are still dressed when visiting a nude beach? They stopped showering at school. Parents became paranoid and over protective. Teachers couldn't even hug a student for being a good citizen or doing a good job because parents automatically thought the teacher was a pedophile. We've raised a couple of generations of "phobic" kids. They tend to be afraid of almost everything.

There are very few of us, even in the nudist ranks, that have exposed our children and grandchildren to the world of nudism. They've enjoyed it and participate in it at their own levels of comfort but one of our grown children and ALL of our grandchildren love visiting the nude beach and going on vacations with us to nude beach venues. I've even got a 10 y.o. grandson that wants to join me for the nude 5K at a local club next year. But he too is obviously experiencing some sort of backlash from someone ... by his actions and reactions to nudity lately.

I wonder if there's a beach group at PC that can begin handing out leaflets to these college students that asks that they respect the long standing tradition of PC's nude use and that even though it's a "public" beach, it has been a nude beach for many decades and that's the way you all would like to keep it.

I had posted this elsewhere and only gotten 4 views, so will try here.

This past Friday my wife and I went to the amazing Pirate Cove near San Luis Obispo (arguably the best nude beach in CA). It was a glorious day, full sun, temps near 80 right on the beach. Even the water felt warmer than usual. It's a rather large beach and there were approximately 100+ people there. That's the good news. Here's the not so good:

First off, I have to say that we have been coming to this beach for at least 25 years; usually about two or three times a year. Recently we moved to the area and it is now our local beach so we visit about twice a month. In the recent past we had noticed a trend of more people, especially the young, keeping their swim suits on (part of the whole "clothing optional" thing?), but this was normally isolated to the part of the beach near the trail, the rest of the beach was completely nude. This is no longer the case; the beach was once 75-85% nude, it's now at least 75% textile. And it's the young, college-aged kids (Cal Poly is nearby) that are keeping their clothes on, which does not bode well for the future.

Of the 50 or so women there, my wife was one of exactly 4 women who were nude. Only one of the other nude women was under 40 years of age. I'd say about 25% of the women were topless; the rest wearing both pieces of their bikinis. The ratio of nude men was higher, but even there only about half the men were nude and the great majority of those were single guys in their 40's and older. Basically, the younger the person, the more likely they wore a bathing suit.

I have to say that everyone was respectful; no one looked at the nudists and giggled and pointed, but we definitely felt like the odd minority; tolerated and ignored. We noticed that there are now so few nudists women on the beach that even the gawkers (easy to spot clutching their Buds with their pants dragging in the sand) seem to have stopped coming. I never thought I'd miss them.

We definitely got the impression that going to this beach was cool, but actually getting nude was not cool at all. When did young people become so uptight? When did nudity become unfashionable? In the past the college kids used to pretty much all be nude; now it very rare, especially for women. This trend seems to have accelerated in the past few years. I've noticed on Yelp reviews of this beach some people are complaining about the "saggy old nudists" on the beach. I can imagine in a few years that nudists will start to feel uncomfortable on their own turf. I know adolescents tend to not want to be nude, but we are talking about college kids here; they should be the first to celebrate their freedom. Then I look at my own two kids, both raised as nudists and both in college. Neither of them go to nude beaches either, probably because ZERO of their friends do.

We've seen this trend on other CA nude beaches. This spring we were on a great beach in Santa Cruz (which also has a large college nearby) on a very warm and wonderful day, and there were exactly 5 nudists on the beach, no one under 45 years old. I recall seeing photos of Bonny Doon beach (also near Santa Cruz) in the 1970's and there appeared to be a hundred people there. Have college kids changed that much? I hate to say it, but many trends start in California, and I have to wonder if this is the future?

I realize this is one's person's perception. Maybe things are different on other CA beaches and elsewhere in the country? We haven't been to the north coast beaches in quite a while; maybe things are different there?

It's just north of Pismo near the small town of Avila Beach. It is a steep hike down the trail in places but if you're in reasonable condition you should be able to make it. I'm not in very good shape at all and I can make it. :)

There are a few photos online but photography is generally frowned upon.

It's a spectacular beach; a favorite of my wife and I. Google images has photos; you may have to copy and paste the link below to get it to work. Directions are online also. The trek down to the beach is not that bad; it's a must see!
