Coming back to California, we're wondering about the current situation with the state park beaches here. In the Santa Cruz area, we saw new signs saying that "nudity in the state park system is prohibited", at beaches that for many decades had been clothing optional.

Are rangers patrolling these beaches now? Does anybody know of citations? With state parks closing to save money, it sounds ridiculous that the park service wastes public resources on preventing people peacefully enjoying these beaches.

"Just possibly, we might get some good legislation if the NAC jumps in after the recent elections. The Dems have a super majority in the CA State Assembly and Senate."

Not to turn this into a political discussion, but Dems seem as uptight as Repubs when it comes to nudity. I don't think CA has one "officially sanctioned" state nude beach. Meaning the ones we do have could disappear any time the pols decide to close it down.

The California legislature was the one who helped close down state park nudism, so I would not be too hopeful on them reversing their drift towards prudish beaches in state parks. On the other hand, I've seen nudity on a river beach that is in a state park, in the Sierra foothills. Not sure if park rangers bother to cite people there. The sherrif does come around to check on parking violations, though.

I've only read about it, never been either, but we did pass it, where I noticed the sign, on one of our trips from the central coast to Carmel and taking Hwy 1.

I think we'd like to try it but we aren't into "Agey."

Fire, what is the place you refer to in your first paragraph above?

R,W & B had so much potential; but the owners weren't nudists and just let the place go downhill (sex and gawkers). There is some talk that the state might buy the property and it would return to traditional nude use, but it's doubtful.

We were at Avila (Pirates Cove) last weekend. Didn't notice any gawkers, but did see a lot of people wearing clothes (very odd on a nude beach!). Of the handful of young women (a large college is nearby) there, most kept their bottoms on, as did some of the guys. It was only the older people and regulars who were totally nude. We did get a kick out of two guys who stripped down to their underwear and jumped in the water. Why such modesty when naked women are swimming right next to them? Not to mention the discomfort of putting on your clothes over soggy underwear. Sheesh. It was a beautiful, hot (although a bit windy) day; we were surprised by how relatively few people were there.

There are NO beach clubs or resorts on the coast of California. There is a place that is coastal and as some clothing optional areas but it's not a nude or clothing optional resort.

At one time ... there was a nude beach on the coast just north of Santa Cruz. It was called Red, White and Blue beach. We visited once and would have gone back but the property was sold and it's no longer a nude beach. We did have some reservations about the beach and returning. More activity of gay sexual acts taking place during the one visit than you'd think. I don't understand the "boldness" of some of these guys. Ample area and places to do what they want to do but they seem to get a bigger thrill outta being right out in the open and in your face.

We visited Avila. Would visit again even though there are gawkers. We go to enjoy the beach and be naked. We don't let these people ruin our day or our fun. We just ignore them. I think they get a bigger kick outta someone that's trying to hide from them ... it's like being addicted to the chase.

Any latest news on Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo County beachs...I know that Santa Barbara County is tough on nudists, but varies.
Avila Beach I understand is nice, but has pin head gawkers...their big thrill..plus a tuff ,steep walk to the beach.
Are there any private or club beaches in these areas ? I live in Santa Maria, California. I think a private, safe club would be best with some of these pot head gangs now.
Thank you.

With all the heinous crimes committed in California, is patrolling beaches for innocent nudists really the best way to allocate meager funds for law enforcement resources?

Never had any issues at Bonny Doon, Bonita Cove, San Gregorio, or Red Rock.

Hi Rebecca, we live in the area and have not heard about anyone being ticketed (though I'm sure it's possible). I haven't seen the signs you mentioned either (jeez, you'd think with the state being broke they wouldn't waste money on signs; as if nudity is such a HUGE problem).

Hands down the best nude beach is Privates in Capitola (look for a tall black iron fence on the ocean side of Opal Cliff Dr., off of 41st Ave). It's a "members only" beach that requires you purchase a yearly $100 card to get through the gate (details posted on the gate). OR find someone who'll let you in. It's well worth it if you live in the area. It's got to be one of the warmest beaches and has an amazing view and marine life. The beach is subject to high tides, so check the tide tables before you go. Nice mixed crowds and no gawkers (which can be a real issue at Bonny Doon, for example). PM me for more details.

We live here and are still in the dark as to the current policies, if citations are being given and on what beaches and which beaches are not.

This is what we do know so far: We have all but lost San Onofre Beach, Trail 6 in So.Cal. Many of those beach goers either risk trouble by the Marines when they venture onto Camp Pendleton property or have left San O for Blacks in San Diego Co.

I have not heard of anymore citations written since the last one, which was citation #13 or #15 ... ALL but two citations were dismissed. The two that were not dismissed did not contact the President of the Friends of San Onofre Beach who is also a lawyer and was defending all those that received tickets for nudity on this beach.

We love Bonny Doon but just recently heard that rangers are patroling there as well and telling people they have to be dressed. I've read that people are complying but once the ranger leaves, the get naked again and that he is only visiting once a day.

They, State Parks and Rec, have made it clear, recently, that they are going back on their word. In a meeting with one of our national organizations, an "agreement" was made that if they gave up any litegation with regards to San Onofre Beach, Trail 6, the State P&R would not go after any other state beach nude tolerated beaches ... that's not been the case.

I know that Pirates Cove is still used but not sure about the others on the Central Coast of the state.
