Before all you perverts out there get yourselves all worked up let me say this: I'm not showing family pics nor am I revealing locations/sites where you can find them, if that's why you're here, move on.

For anyone seriously interested in my dilemma here it is.

Although single now, I was in a long-term relationship in which we were practicing nudists. The "We" consisted of my G/F, her daughter & son and my daughter. As a nudist family we took family photographs as I'm certain many nudist families do. The Hard Drive on which these pics are saved is now dead.

I am in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida. I need to find a reputable company/person who can fix the drive or at the very lest retrieve the data; the logical caveat here is that it must be someone nudist friendly so I don't spend the next 3 years defending myself in court.

Actually because of my ex's vindictiveness the pics have already been viewed by local law enforcement and recognized as social nudist family activities. I'm still not willing to take the chance with someone else and retrieving the data.

So if you know of anyone who can help, it would be tremendously appreciated.

This is precisely why I love being a part of the global Nudist community. A fellow nudist is in need and everyone comes running.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I had simultaneously posted this info on local forums as well and have found someone able to assist me locally.

The drive does require someone with the knowledge, skill & equipment to recover the data. In response to the one query, it is more than just the pics, some old data I would wish to have as well as the family pics.

Thanks again to everyone, I'll post again once the data is retrieved.

Beachcomber's solution relies on the fact that the drive is still readable. If the electronics are bad, this will not work. Since it takes a working drive to load it on, you will have to have another computer to attach the bad one to. I have found that these programs work very well if the drive is just corrupted or the files have been deleted.

If all the previous replies seemed far too complicated - try http://www.cardrecovery.com/?rid=google&aid=cr3001

It's worked for me in the past. But beware - it retrieves EVERYTHING - so you may have to spend several hours sorting through the dross

Good Luck.

I have had numerous issues regarding dead hard drives. All of those above are possible, but I will give you a couple more
1) if the drive does a click-click it means that there is a serious problem and most likely will have to go to a data recovery service - which runs into considerable money.
2) if the drive spins up for a while then just quits spinning (you can tell by the noise) or seems to go up and down in the sound, it could be an overheating of the circuitboard on the bottom of the drive. I have had good luck in that instance, by putting the drive in an anti-static bag with a paper towl and put it in the freezer for a half hour. Then get some ice cubes in a sealed baggie and hold it on the circuit board while you connect the drive in the slave mode and copy the pictures off.
3) Find another drive that is EXACTLY the same model and firmware version and swap the circuit boards. This has saved my bacon several times.

You can PM me if you need more info. I would be glad to assist if I can.

Bilak1964,

If you heard a popcorn popping sound when booting it is very likely that you will need to use a professional service to retrieve the data. If not, and you are adventuresome, connect the HDD as slave (by resetting the jumper on the HDD) and installing it on the primary IDE cable along with a good boot drive as master, boot and see if the slave is recognized. Make sure to ground yourself before touching the HDD or anything inside the case. Make sure you store HDD in anti-ESD bag. Safest to use a professional service.

I too think contacting AANR a good idea.

Best Wishes, Jim

Bilak,
In most cases, if a hard drive won't boot up doesnt mean it's dead, you may still be able to read from it if you hook it to another computer. All you need is an external case for your old hard drive, you can pick one up at Comp USA, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, most places have them. I keep one just for this reason.

Take your hard drive out of your old computer and put it in the new case, then plug it up to another computer. With any luck you should be able to read the old drive like an external drive.

This goes to show that a foremost issue of computer wisdom is to frequently back up your hard disk.

Bilak, Have you called the AANR office to see if they have any contacts. A friend of mine who publishes a few stories here and there for TNS might be of help. I'll email Mark's address to you.

Two weeks, ago my external hard drive "died" and it contained thousands of pictures, many of family and friends in a naturist context plus old glamour pictures from long dead years. I had been backing all this stuff up but it is a long job with old family pictures going back to the 1930s (yes before I was born).

I ended up going to a local firm who repair and assemble computers. They truly had no interest in my vast archive and managed to insert all my pictures into a new drive. A quiet word with those who undertake any work for you may put your mind at rest. I realize that attitudes do vary in different countries but a picture of naked people is not that an issue over here. If porn is included then that is way different but social nudity is certainly not pornography. Any business is probably too busy to get involved with putting such images out to a wider audience. There is no reason to think that your images will even be seen whilst the problem is resolved. Folder headings yes, but the shots probably not.

Good luck

It certainly appears doable, as I have seen data recovered from other defunct hard drives in the past.

But, my question is: is there other data that you need to recover, so that these pictures are just a side-issue? Or is there a question that you really want to retrieve these pictures, themselves. If it is the former, you never need to mention the pictures, just ask to retireve the data that you do want.

Sorry we can't help but wanted to say "good luck" with your project and we hope you're able to retrieve all that info and pictures or...fix the computer.

Take care.
