Why is it that Catholics have the vow of Confession & Protestants don't? |

This comes down to the main point of the whole Reformation! Each person can talk to God directly, and the role of the clergy is diminished or even,as with Quakers, totally eliminated. The Catholic Church has the Priest hear Confession of details, most Protestants simply ask you to review your own actions to God in your personal prayers. |

I myself am Catholic. My understanding of confessing to a priest was that he was like a middle man and after hearing your confessed sin. He would give you something to do to make up for it then pray to God for
your sin as an extra help. I myself don't practice confession with a priest I pray to God myself. I do know I should be and need to be a better Christian. As far the priest not sharing your confession with any one
he is suppose to be to my understanig like a lawyer or a doctor and is bound to the hypricratic oath. This is for any ordianed minister. Don't forget this worked in the first O.J. trial. When he had a conversation with I believe Rosey Grear. It was ruled that since Grear was an Ordianed Miniter that the conversation by law was to remain silent. Whether or not anyone agrees with it I have the respect for the laws our forefathers put down for us. And I do believe if there is any thing we do wrong.We someday will deal with God for it and he will be our final Judge. |

I have never understood the confessional anyway cause when Jesus took our sins up on himself and died the death we deserved for us, Then we were set free. We have a direct line to Father God through Jesus his son. You see we have no need to confess anything to anyone except Jesus and he takes it to his father and says forgive them Father for they are mine. Now Jesus will ask us to turn away for sin and make it right with someone we have done wronged but he is the one to hear our confession.

A Christian teaching, basic as it is, it to render unto Ceaser's what it is Ceaser's. Although it can be argued that refers to money, it can also refer to civil laws. What the law requires of you, do it. It won't give you absolution from God, but it will render you not at odds with the law.
If I were a clergyman, I would tell the person to turn himself in. Make amends with your brother, and then show yourself to the clergyman.

I never Got that, as a Christian, Repentance/Confession is only the beginning is it not? we as Christians believe that we must make amends for the sins we have committed against our fellow man, and if you confess Murder, then in order to get forgiveness from god, you must make give yourself up to authorities and be punished accordingly. to me that is the way of things, and if a priest is taking a confession and granting forgiveness without telling the person to turn themselves in in order to get forgiveness, then I have a gripe with him.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "the vow of confession". Some protestant denominations - Lutherans for exanmple - have public confession as a regular part of the liturgy. Is the vow of confession you are talking about a vow on the part of the confessor (priest) or of the penitant? |

Being raised a Catholic, it's always been my understanding that a priest may never break the vow of the confessional regardless of the severity of the crime. |
