My wife and I just came back from a beautiful experience at Hilsbachtal Naturist Camping site near Sinsheim, Germany.

Although we've been visitors to the saunas for years, this was only our second visit to what people in the States would recognize as a nudist camp. It was beautiful in ways I didn't expect.

In the German saunas, there is little talking, especially with strangers. The sauna is considered 'heilige', which means holy. There is drinking in some places...Some even tolerate overt sexual activity, though not officially. It is a truly frightening experience to leave a pool full of frolicking children and go into a steam room where a teenage girl is giving her boyfriend a hand-job. Still, this is the exception. Most are entirely too silent and conservative. Still, there's nothing like the communal soup of the aufguss followed by a dip in freezing cold water. It just gets the blood flowing like nothing else. So, we know the camp is no replacement for the sauna, however:

This place is wonderful. Unfortunately, when we went (today is April 14), the pool was still empty. This year is unusually warm, and they don't expect visitors until late May. The grounds were very well-kept, though. There was a large children's playground that featured a very well-protected trampoline from Mesquite, TX (where my family lives). There were many table-tennis tables, many picnic tables and a couple of tennis courts. There was also a beach-volleyball court. There was a restaurant on-site, but we'd brought our own food and drinks.
To our surprise, there were many people who spoke English. I stopped to wonder at a magnolia tree growing in one of the camper's yards. There just aren't magnolia trees in Germany, due to the long, cold winters. The people who lived there heard me talking about it and came out to introduce themselves. Scottish, as it turns out. They had such a nice spread. We talked for a bit and promised to get together next week.

The owners also speak very good English. We traded beers and had a few laughs. Everything was very warm and natural. It was a beautiful day.

I really recommend it, though it's not a back-to-basics camping site. You definitely feel surrounded by people. But that's what makes it so wonderful. The people are warm and friendly and will go 10 miles with you if you give them an inch of respect and two words of German. One note: these people seem to be mostly retirees and their grandchildren. There were a few people our age (early 30s), but they were more aloof. City-folk, I'd call 'em.

I will go back as often as I can before I have to return to the States.

This was just a day-trip. I'll write more on it when we get back from 4 days in a tent there on April 23.
