Gunnisons Beach is part of the Sandy Hook Gateway National Seashore and is a long, wide, beautiful beach. During the summer months the beach averages 5000 nude/topless friendly people on weekdays and approx 8000 on weekends. We live 50 mins from the beach and therefore do not stay in hotels. However, there are several hotel/motels in the area. The Fairbanks Motel in Sea Bright NJ is the closest (5 mins). It is an older establishment with clean rooms and an excellent Portugese restaurant (Marisol) next door. The other hotels are a 15 min away. The Macintosh is in West Long Branch NJ, The Red Roof Inn and Holiday Inn are in Tinton Falls NJ. The restaurants in the immediate area of the beach are too plentiful to list. In Sandy Hook you have The Seagulls Nest. It is situated on the peninsular with spectacular views and sunsets of the ocean and bay. The food is good but the menu features only beer, well drinks, burgers and sandwiches
Just outside the park along both the ocean and bay there are dozens of fine seafood restaurants that will not disappoint you. All of these places have entertainment daily in the summer and weekends in the fall.

A little road trip planned to visit my daughter and then some friends. Hoping to hit Gunnison on the trip back. So far the weather looks like it might be good. Keeping fingers crossed.

It's too bad that alcohol is banned now. A beer or too at the beach was a nice way to kick back but leave it to those that can't be responsible to ruin it.

Smoking bans are becoming more common! As long as it is outdoors, I can live with either one. Indoors, now that is a different story.

In case anyone still logs on here, you might want to know that alcohol and smoking are now banned at Sandy Hook. You can read about this at nj.com here https://www.nj.com/monmouth/2019/04/drinking-banned-at-sandy-hook-as-last-public-nj-beach-that-allowed-booze-goes-dry.html

I pointed out to my wife that people were actually using the clothed section as we were leaving. There were maybe only 5 or 6 people but we were too far away to see if they were clothed or not. We’ll have to pay more attention next time there as we usually set up not too far from the border between the two sections.

Finally made it this week. With all the rain on the East coast, we changed our plans coming back from VA to get to Gunnison on Tuesday evening for a couple hours. Our original plan was to get there Wednesday morning but it was going to be raining. Short stop over is better than no stop over. May try for one more trip this summer...but we will see.

You're not alone freetobe. I've only been there 2 times so far and the weather is the reason. When storms or showers are in the forecast I don't go because of my driving distance. Hoping for a better August and September and I hope you're able to get there again.

2 things I noticed on my 2 days there - the NPS crackdown on tents continues and nudity in the clothed portion is rampant. There still seem to be a lot of ppl. unaware that enclosed tents are banned and rangers spend time going around telling them about it. I heard their conversations and the rangers are being very polite about it and explaining the situation. They need to be able to see better across the beach and especially need room for emergency vehicles. The nudity in the clothed portion just goes on and on. Granted the clothed area is not marked well enough - not enough signage. I saw they now have red flags high in the air marking the boundry. But it looks like not everyone sees them or doesn't understand what they mean or don't care. For whoever is reading this - if would be helpful if you could check out the area a few times when you are there and explain to those who don't understand where the boundry line is.

Never made it because the state of NY wanted to celebrate my birthday! Well...maybe not the whole state...just the County. OK...maybe not the County, but the city of Waterford wanted to celebrate. Alright...maybe it was my Son, Daughter-in-law and Grandson...but that was enough to keep me home.
Still planning a visit...just don’t know when yet.

We didn’t make it last year but my wife and I are planning on going in a couple weeks to spend the day. Hoping for a nice day on the 16th so that I can be there on my birthday. Keeping my fingers crossed.

That's where my wife and I set up...we are usually on the side away from the clothed section and slightly behind the shack. We haven't made any definite plans yet but hopefully in the next month or so.

I was there on Friday and didn't see him. So maybe it's a weekend thing or maybe just once in awhile. When I've seen him he was setup between the lifeguard shack and the water, not far from the clothed area. In any case I believe he does what he does just out of the kindness of his heart.
