I'm just curious if anyone else here is particularly passionate about music...either as a musician, or just an avid listener. Post your tastes and tell us a little about what you do if you're a musician.

I'm primarily a metalhead, mainly interested progressive/power metal (for those unfamiliar, it's generally melodic metal, often with operatic high-register vocals), but I like a lot of other subgenres as well.

I'm also into a lot of orchestral music, and will be attending a performance of Mahler's 2nd Symphony in 2 weeks.

I play guitar...started in summer 2000, and started at a music school in 2003, graduated last May.

I still like to play my 1967 Hagstrom 8-string bass I bought new back in the day. Not active in any band now, but enjoy jamming with blues players, classic rock and "oldies", especially if a Hammond B-3 is involved!

I'm sure I think I said what I probably meant, but maybe not.

(p.s.- vintage Leslie cabinets with that B-3 rule!)

I have studies classical piano for many years.
our daughter is a classically trained Cuturatura Soprano
She turned down Julliard in NY for Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ
Was the first chair in the Chapel Choir
Invited to participate in the Christmas "Amahl and the Night Visitor" at Carnigie Hall and then back at Westminster
I used to accompany her in all of her concerts
Stopped when she quit the school
broke my heart
Have not played since
Very much into "August Rush" I also "HEAR" the music in nature, the sound of the water, the rushes, the woods

I'm a huge music fan, mostly into classic rock, hard rock and metal. I am a beginner on bass as well.

I studied music for 4 years in college. My emphases were trumpet, French horn, and voice.

I no longer play trumpet or the beast, and I'm only recently starting to regain my voice after quitting smoking (at the moment, I literally sound like Peter Brady when I try to sing anything above middle C).

I mostly like electronic and jazz, but I have a broad collection and like lots of stuff.

As for working in music? The closest I've come is being the props master on a touring Broadway musical.

Hello agmetal,

I'm involved with music myself, having worked in several facets of the Brisbane music scene for a number of years - been a songwriter, DJ, music critic, worked in retail at Disc Pro and HMV music, as well as managed a local garage punk band and now trying to carve out a performing career of my own with two bands d-wizz 2.0 and Laissez-Fayre (the latter a female orientated band out to evangelise nudism to a younger rock and pop audience).

I've got some sites of my music that you can have a listen to at: http://www.myspace.com/dwizz2point0 and http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/d-wizz2point0 and http://www.myspace.com/laissezfayre http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/laissezfayre

Have a listen and let me know what you think! :-D

Yeah, I think Mike Kenneally just did the tour...which, annoyingly didn't come anywhere near me. Then again, the headlining band was someone I had no interest in seeing anyway.

I stand corrected. As I was inserting references to the above post, I noticed too that Mike was not the recording artist. It's Brendon Small that we hear on the show. Brendon is truly an amazing metal guitarist, one of the best.

Thanks for the tip. Periphery [Periphery at MySpace] sounds like it belongs in my headphones while I'm working!
agmetal Posted - 03/23/2008 : 03:35:06 AM
I'm fairly certain that Brendon Small never played for Zappa, but his music writing is awesome...he did go to Berklee for a while, too.

That's awesome that you're into stuff like that, though! Meshuggah does some crazy stuff. Have you ever heard of a band called Periphery, from the DC area? Somewhat similar to Meshuggah stylistically, and their new singer is a good friend of mine.

Your site administrator has 30 years band experience on drums, keyboards, vocals, arranging (rock band and orchestra), bass and lead guitar. I'm at professional level on all these, but best on the last three.

My personal favorite genre is math metal. Favorite band is Meshuggah. "Meshuggah is a Swedish five-piece experimental metal band, known for their use of extended polymetric passages, complex drum patterns, odd time signatures, angular, dissonant guitar riffs, and harsh vocals." [more on wikipedia]

Although, the Dëthkløk death metal band on the Adult Swim cartoon Metalocalypse (12:15AM and 3:15AM EST weekdays on Cartoon Network) is a strong second favorite. Well, except Zappa. The first, and currently only Dëthkløk album "debuted at #21 in the Billboard 200, making it the highest charting death metal album ever." Not bad for a cartoon band.

Did you know one of the guitar players performing the music for Dëthkløk when they play live was Frank Zappa's swiss army knife super virtuoso lead guitarist, after the Steve Vai era? His name is Mike Keneally. Don't get me started on Zappa...!
