Posted - 02/15/2008 : 03:51:00 AM I'm kind of surprised that San Onofre beach in S. California hasn't yet been posted as a topic under this category (although it was briefly mentioned in comparison with San Diego's Black's Beach in a different topic).
A few years back, San Onofre was my first introduction to being nude on a beach (or in a public venue for that matter) and it completely revamped my feelings toward nudity--I've been hooked ever since!
I still think that San Onofre is my favorite beach---no offense to Black's Beach which is a close 2nd---but San Onofre is usually less crowded, and it's just so beautiful and relaxing and removed enough from civilization that you really feel one with nature. The beach is pretty clean (as far as Calif beaches go), the water is beautiful, you often can see dolphins swimming in the distance, and the cliffs are magnificent.
Sometimes you see military exercises by helicopter or boat (Camp Pendleton owns the adjacent beach just to the south) but that's kind of cool to watch too (usually that doesn't happen, but it's an interesting change of pace when it does).
There's just a great vibe there---a mix of ages, genders, families, singles, surfers, bikers, campers, etc.--and it's a very friendly atmosphere.
Only part of the beach is c/o, but the clothed people for the most part seem to stay to their portion---or if they do venture into the nude part, they seem to take things in stride (I rarely, if ever, have seen gawkers).
I just hope to high heaven that the proposed freeway extension isn't implemented through that State Park---that would be a tragedy!
If anyone on here ever visits San Onofre, they should holler--it's more fun to go with people, and none of my friends are into the nude beach scene!

Posted - 08/01/2010 : 9:13:54 PM Before the crackdown on nudity....yes...if the weather was right and the water in the low to mid 70's....lots of naked surfers.
Haven't been down there in too long....so not sure if the nude surfers have moved south of the fenceline or just stopped altogether.

Posted - 08/01/2010 : 2:03:52 PM Thanks FP. That's kinda what I thought, but it was worth asking. Yeah, old mans is where I like to surf.
Does anybody surf nude at SO? |

Posted - 07/31/2010 : 01:56:41 AM Avoiding it would require you to walk a long...long...long ways to the nude section and beyond the fenceline.
You can park as soon as you get off the freeway where all the surfers go....I think the call that section "ol' mans". But the walk....geeze...must be close to 4.5-5 miles!
From the south....you'd have to park in Oceanside and then traverse the entire length of the beach on Camp Pendleton property....not a good idea.
I don't think it's worth trying to avoid the hefty day use fees!

Posted - 07/23/2010 : 6:55:09 PM So I did end up going to San Onofre last weekend. My first time in a year. Initially it appeared quite disheartening, because the traditionally nude area, usually teeming with people, was virtually empty. Except for the volleyball court, where there was a game going on, with several people nude and several partially clothed. But the rest of the surrounding area was virtually desolate, with maybe just a handful of clothed people. It was quite sad to see.
However, I ventured a little further south, past the fence into the Military Base property----where in the past I usually didn't venture onto----and this area was full of people, including groups and families, etc. I presume the vast majority of folks who usually congregated north of the fence have decided to congregate south of the fence, where the Lifeguards don't have official jurisdiction.
I've heard the stories that the Lifeguards can (and have) issued warnings/citations even on the Military Base, but I guess maybe people felt they were tempting fate slightly less by being south of the fence. In any case, I was very happy to see such a large crowd there.
I was cautious enough to remain wary of my surroundings and cover up if I saw any Lifeguards come 'round, but I witnessed none. It was as normal a day at San Onofre as any in past years (except on the other side of the fence). I was very happy to see this was the case!

Posted - 07/17/2010 : 03:55:41 AM Thanks, FireProf! I'll keep that in mind. And I'll still be crossing my fingers (and not "gingers" as I so brilliantly typed in my prior post---although I suppose if I discover I have gingers---whatever they may be---I'll keep those crossed too!)

Posted - 07/16/2010 : 11:39:02 PM A female visitor posted just recently stating that large groups, couples and smaller groups...haven't been targeted at all but that some singles have been....that doesn't make sense but she seems to be a frequent visitor and had several people agreeing with her.
What is consistant is that the lifeguards are telling people that if they (nudists) see the truck coming down the beach, cover up and there will be no problem...when they leave...you can do what you want.

Posted - 07/16/2010 : 5:26:19 PM Well, this is encouraging news. I am going to give it a try tomorrow (Sat). I'm hoping the more people that continue to frequent San Onofre sans clothes, the less likely that ticketing will continue. Keeping my gingers crossed!!

Posted - 07/07/2010 : 10:48:45 PM Haven't heard from Allen yet but a member of the Volleyball group posted a message on another website and stated that they were there this past Sunday....ALL naked and no tickets!
I think my wife and I will be going a few times before she starts work again and will just be aware of the lifeguards and our surroundings.

Posted - 07/07/2010 : 10:40:01 PM Thanks FP. As it is, More Mesa is closer, but I haven't been there on a real sunny day - strange summer that we're having - it's been real low key and I've been the only one to go in the water. One kewl thing is my GF did decide to go at least partially nude on our last trip. Because of that I especially don't want a bumb trip if we do go to SO. I still want to go because I've never been there and I would like to see how many people are there and what the atmosphere is like. |

Posted - 07/05/2010 : 02:33:15 AM I'm not saying that your friend doesn't know what they are talking about but...
Allen Baylis is pretty good about reporting to the membership (Friends of San Onofre Beach) when tickets have been issued and I haven't received an email or seen anything thing on the website.
I'll send him an email for an update.

Posted - 07/04/2010 : 10:16:25 PM I was hoping to go this weekend but a friend that lives in OC told me they have been reporting tickets being given there regularly. If that isn't happening lately I'd sure like to know. |

Posted - 07/02/2010 : 9:23:09 PM Seems that the Park Rangers don't have the time or the manpower to travel down to the beach, spy from the cliffs and go down to write tickets so.....they enlisted the Lifeguards to do the ticket writing.
Now...according to the volleyball group; The lifeguards don't care if you're nude so...they have told the volleyball group to pass the word that if you see them coming...COVER UP! When they leave....UNCOVER!
Haven't been down there ourselves in a while but do stay in contact with those that live closer and still visit. Yes...some have ventured down pass the fenceline to avoid a ticket but have also heard that the lifeguards are patroling pass the fenceline as well.
I think the best bet is to just cover up when they come by, be aware of your surroundings and take a look up at the cliffs every so often. Pain in the butt to do all that but if you don't want a ticket...and still wanna be nude at San O. ....it's something we have to live with until it's settled in court when they fight those 4 tickets already issued.

Posted - 07/02/2010 : 6:03:49 PM So what is the status this summer for San Onofre. I haven't been since they actively threatened to start ticketing. I hear conflicting things: they were ticketing, then they seemed to stop, or they were only ticketing sporadically, or only singles, not groups....thinking of going down there this weekend. I imagine it will be crowded for the holiday....will it be worth it? I don't wanna really make the drive if the patrols are actively ticketing.

Posted - 02/28/2009 : 01:31:45 AM That's good to hear, Annie, because that sort of decision can buttress other disputes over other California nude beaches, too.
You'd think that with about 1000 miles of California coastline, maybe a few beaches could be officially designated as nude beaches, which would not be up for review for changing its status, unless you had some rowdy nudists there trashing the beach. If only 5 percent of California's coastline was dedicated to being nude beaches, that would yield 50 miles of nude beaches. The rest of the coastline, or 95% of it could be textile. Seems reasonably fair to me, and that should be fair to the clothed people, too. Of course some of the California coast does not have beaches, but only mountains plunging into the ocean.
Life goes on.
