I'm divorced, have custody of my three teenagers - two girls (19 & 15) and one son. I introduced the possibility of being a nudist family about 5 years ago. My girls have readily taken to it and enjoy nudity in the house and going to resorts. My son however has yet to be totally comfortable with the lifestyle and won't join us at resorts. Does anyone have ideas on how to help me acquire more comfort in the lifestyle?

Okay, I don't come from a nudist family and have been "into" nudism since October 2014, but I know quite a lot about family nudism. Well, the preteen and teen years are difficult for going nude, and happens even with nudist families in which the parents raised their children to be nudists since birth. The teenagers get more aroused by sex as a result of changing genitals. If you and your ex-husband did not raise your kids to be nudists since birth, now you can explain to them that you can start walking around naked at home and maybe now your kids will join, too, if they choose, but never coerce them. There is no age limit for nudism. I'm 23 and a young man, also am considering raising kids as nudists. You can explain that being nude is no big deal and have the kids join you, but they can also be nude at home only and be home nudists, even if it's only when no one is around at home. Raising is about having kids in their growing-up years so they know about life as adults and the real world, not about being nude regardless of the kids and parents both adults. I'm still with my parents, haven't told them of nudism, and am naked when no one is around at home. You could dress and undress in the open, assuming no neighbors care about it either with blinds/curtains open, in front of the kids. You can leave the door open in the bathroom when using the toilet and washing your body. If your kids are too self-conscious, don't force them to nudism. maybe they'll be nudists later. Family nudism is healthy, happy, and rewarding. In children under 11, it's easy to have them be nude if you raise them to not be ashamed of their bodies, but once puberty starts, even in nudist families, it gets quite difficult. You could even be nude when having guests or visiting friends/family, if you and them are fine with that. Sleep in the nude and don't close the bedroom door in your bedroom, and have the kids know that you sleep naked so if they're uncomfortable they can simply not go over. If you taught them to be ashamed of their bodies since toddlers, it can get difficult to start bringing them up as nudists as teenagers. You could then apologize to the kids and now tell them that being nude is no big deal. Even in the winter, you can still be nude at home, assuming you can turn up the heat. The kids could sleep naked, visit nude beaches, visit nudist resorts, be nude only in their bedrooms, even go outside naked if the neighbors (or if you live in the country, possibly if not surely no neighbors around), don't mind, and they are comfortable with it too. You and the kids could swim and sunbathe nude, possibly starting at home. Even if they're only nude when they're alone in the home, that may still make them nudists. It's a difficult stage in life as a teenager, so don't push nudism on them, and just explain to them about nudism and they may join you.

as far the nudist as kids nowdays being turned off when they became teens i think most of us who are nudist wish we had the oppurtunity as kids to experience the nudist lifestyle. when my mother learned that my family visited nudist camps she stated yeah your father and i knew several nudist couples and they were always inviting us to join them at the nudist camp but we didn't want anything to do with it, my Dad had passed away years before this conversation - i find it hard to believe he had the same view but went along with it. would loved to have been a nudist kid of the 50's-60's era.

Carlover, as I said, I'd be happy to be proved wrong. Of course a 63 year old man CAN have a 15 year old daughter, but not very many do. HomeNudist makes a valid point about singledad's failure to write a follow-up post. Maybe my (and others') skepticism put him off, and I'd regret it if that's truly the case. But ... for a man who professed to have genuine concerns, he sure gave up easy. I

I have to say that I think one problem in todays society that hurts the movement of nudism itself is under almost every legal statute in each state simply being a nudist if you get in trouble for it etc can put you on the same list as a sex offender, I find this to be hurting the new , younger group from wanting to be more open about enjoying nudism. They are all too afraid of getting caught and being in trouble just for being nude not lewd..Might be why there seem to be less and less family nudists?

And a 63 year old man with a 15 year old daughter? Well ... maybe. And why does singledad want "ideas on how to help ME acquire more comfort" when he says it's his son who has the problem?

Maybe this is totally legit, and I'm just a cynical old S.O.B. I'd be happy to be proved wrong. But the entire post just doesn't quite ring true to me.

I have to disagree with you on this. My dad has a friend who is divorced, in his early 60's and has two biological daughters, one 14 and 17. I don't really see a problem with singledad's post other then an it the fact that its wording wouldn't thrill an english professor.

This is a fascinating theory. I have at least a couple of nudists friends in which that was the case...

I've also seen a link between nudists and positive childhood memories involving nudity. Part of it is nostalgia. A friend of mine once recounted to me "happy childhood" moments, where her and some neighborhood kids would go skinny-dipping in the local pond. She became a nudist as she got older, because being nude would "take her back to happier times", and back in touch with her inner child. I've also spoken with other nudists who turned to nudism not because of body-acceptance issues or therapeutical reasons; but because they "always remembered loving being naked" as children.

The main reason, it seems, for kids throwing up their middle finger and walking away from nudism - forever - seems to be when they feel nudism was forced on them or that their boundaries growing up where not respected. In that respect I would agree with Bob; if nudity was not "confined" to areas and settings where nudity is "inescapable", the issue of "reacting against" nudity might be greatly reduced.

I have seen that result too. There seems to be a link between "nudists" and children who's bodies were criticized. In later life many of us try to compensate for the criticism by flaunting ourselves naked. In contrast, children who grow up with nudist parents often come to view nudism as some kind of "strange" behavior. Having to go hide behind fences with other "strange" adults promotes that theory for the children.

My advocacy has become that of making naked as an acceptable part of the whole culture. Going naked at the beach, in the woods, or even in town instead of behind a high fence teaches children that naked is another life style choice like "gay" or "goth." I want naked to become normal, not hidden or set off.

Bob

Well you do being up an intersting point about making nudism "as an acceptable part of the whole culture, such as going naked at the beach, in the woods, or even in town instead of being behind a high fence", would teach kids and make much sense as "that nude lifestyle is just like "gay" or "goth".

Fortunately for us with our two kids 12y.o(13 in this month),& 10 y.o have had the opportunity to teach them that "being nude is normal, not something to be hidden".

Yeah Bob I remember it, wasn't it on a program about extreme families or something like that?

It would be nice to see if anything had changed.

don't know if anyone remembers the documentary on tv last year i think where parents had a travel trailer in a nudist camp in south florida raising two boy than 15 and 12 yoa i think, the 15 year old was turned off but the 12 year old loved it, the only negatives i saw was they were homeschool so that they seemed to isolate them and the 15 year old wasn't ccomfortable with his enviroment, i grew up in south florida being raised in a adult 55+ community so i can kinda relate - yeah your only a kid once.i wish they would do a followup on the story.

Bob,

Our kids did the same at about that age, I wish we had taken them to some nudist venues to meet other nudist kids. I truely believe that would have made a world of difference.

well it's hard to believe teens being nudist, mine took flight at ages 12 but i have seen where others still have teens as nudist and my dad was 52 yoa when i was born so anything is possible. i am always suspecious when their very first post is one they start and it is always a question along these lines.
