I've heard the authorities are cracking down on nudists at trail six at San Onofre beach in California. Does anyone know the current official status? Will I be cited for nudity?
The current status of San Onofre Beach Trail 6 is...it's the same as it was before the lawsuit.
Nudity was tolerated at San O beach south of Trail 6 and has been for over 30 years. The Friends of San O Beach have always had a good relationship with the rangers and lifeguards.
Over the last couple of years, there have been complaints about sexual activity, mostly up at the parking lot adjacent to Trail 6. Some citations were given and the DPR (state Dept. of Parks and Rec) decided to take this opportunity to crackdown on nudity on this part of the beach.
Signs were erected and patroling began. The Friends of San O beach group filed suit against the state DPR and the case was heard in an Orange County court. The judge sided with the Friends of San O group against the DPR because the DPR did not follow procedure in deviating from DPR policy (Cahill Policy). Public hearings needed to be held and they were not.
The DPR has filed an appeal but nothing has happened for sometime on this issue. So.....
The beach status of San Onofre Trail 6 is still used nude and there have been no reports of citations or patrols by the rangers. The lifeguards do patrol but do not hassle the nudists.
Appeals court has ruled in favor of the DPR and they are now issuing citations once again. Be careful if you choose to go there. The NAC is planning further legal action and may push this to higher courts, for the time being, it is illegal.

This is erroneous information. According to Allen Baylis on the Friends of San Onofre Beach website, there will be no citations issued for the remainder of this summer. The parks department is ordering new signage and will engage in a public education campaign to let people know that nudity will no longer be allowed after this season.
