Here is a link of interesting comments made by German people about the Victorian hangups Americans still hold onto for dear life, or so Americans think. At least Americans do not take showers with their raincoats on, so there is hope for the textile neurotics out there, but we here, in Nudist-Resorts.org, do not need hope, save for hope that more nudist friendly places are opened up.

Notice the casualness and mattter-of-factness about these ordinary people in Germany. There are links that connect all three similar articles within the same website. They are people like you and me, but their government is freer in the area of being nude.

Warmskin, your thread title is misleading. Europe is large and diverse. Germany is not Europe and is not representative of Europe. In fact, attitudes towards nudity vary greatly within Europe, and vary greatly within Germany too.

There are several strands that have made such a difference in attitudces. The entire Baltic area has traditions of communal nude baths and saunas in the villages. This is true across a variety of ethnic groups and seperate religious and social traditions.
Partly building from that base, the Frei Korper Kultur nudist movement (FKK) of the 1920s and early '30s centered in Germany and Scandinavia, and was a part of a much wider political, social and economic surge, linked, at that time, to Socialism.

American Nudism has occupied a vastly different environment and functions without the types of cultural linkages that make up an important part of the European background and scene. While I have less knowledge on the British, I suspect that the setup is in betweeen, somewhat more similar to the American experience.

My wife and I recently stayed at a C/O B&B in Australia. (More on that in another topic.) A couple from the Czech Republic arrived the day after we did, and I had the opportunity to inquire about Czech attitudes toward public nudity. I was somewhat astonished when they estimated that about 30% of the adults of their generation (they were in their 50's) routinely sunbathed nude. 30%?!? Wow. Even allowing for a degree of exaggeration, that is a high percentage. What puzzled them about American attitudes wasn't so much the small numbers of nude sunbathers in the US, but rather the intolerance of the practice on moralistic grounds. At home, they said, the attitude of the textile majority toward nude sunbathers was "No Big Deal".

Thank you for your correction. I was painting with a too broad a brush. I can only think, on the average, that Europeans are more comfortable with nudity. That would take into account the message from VLM34. Of course, there are Europeans who would never go to a nude beach or resort, as well as there are Americans who would love to be at a nude beach.

I've had the pleasure of traveling to Germany many times on business, mostly to Stuttgart. I always stay at a nice 4-star hotel, the Mercure Pullman Fontana, that proudly declares "Leave your clothes behind and relax in our 1400 sqm facilities with saunas, gym and wellness centre." When I stayed there last, the signs said the pool and sundeck were "textile free."

Even if all of Germany isn't like this, it's a great place for nudist visitors to Stuttgart.
