The obvious solution is for everyone to become a nudist and soak up the sunshine, within limits. Ban clothing, and we'll be the better for it.

It is a bit too cold to be an outdoor nudist today (and for the last few and next many days!). -14°C / +7°F here today, and winter doesn't begin officially for another nine days .
I had a heart attack and a stroke in August & September (I am doing well now, thanks ) and the first 'medication' on the prescription list was 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D per day. I was already taking that amount or more - but interesting that mainstream medicine now sees the value of the Sunshine Vitamin!

Sorry to hear about your heart attack, Mark. I had one of those things, too.
Definitely take that Vitamin D3! I also take Alpha Lipoic Acid (even though I don't have diabetes), 100 micrograms of selenium, polyphenols, CoQ10, Omega 3 oil, Fenofibric Acid (to lower triglycerides and raise HDL), Zocor, and a beta-blocker. Of course, needless to say - consult your doctor about these items.
I'm a vegan, eat berries, beans, veggies, leafy greens, lots of green tea, pomegranate, Concord grape, and cherry juices.
I do a lot of walking and light weight-lifting, too.
My heart attack was 15 years ago, and I'm still in good shape.
Maybe NaturistDoc can weigh in on this.

Thanks, gentlemen for the good wishes and advice. I am in a city which has some of the foremost heart and stroke researchers and practitioners in the world. The University of Calgary and Foothills Medical Centre are only 5 minutes away by ambulance (more if I were driving!) I have been referred to the excellent local rehabilitation clinics and services as well been prescribed carefully prepared medications, in addition to my own regime of extremely good vitamins and minerals - and I am almost back to 'normal'. I won't go in to details, every individual has their appropriate regimen, and what is right for me may not be right for you. BTW, 'normal' is just a setting in the dryer
I have written before about the UVB-emitting lamp we have, which supplements Vit.D by mouth. In short, my wife cannot absorb Vit.D by mouth due to short gut syndrome following surgery for colon cancer. Her endocrinologist prescribed an experimental treatment using the UVB lamp, for which he had heard positive anecdotal reports. My wife, in her mid-70s, now 'has the bones of a young woman" (and I am not allowed to look for her ), her osteoporosis has been reversed (yes!) I also use the lamp, and it creates a skin (mine) which doesn't burn when exposed in summer, as well as providing a wonderful sense of well being in mid winter. Google 'Solarc' for more information.

For those familiar with the Naturist Living Show, Stephane did an episode on Vitamin D in 2010. There are over 80 pod cast in all, I download them on my flashdrive and listen to them when I'm driving to and from work.

Just had a follow up visit with my MD. She was going over my blood work results. She got to my Vitamin D and said..."Wow .. Rock Star! Vitamin D is awesome. But ... that would be expected given your lifestyle. Just make sure to use sunscreen on ALL your parts!"
Geez I love my doctor!
Loves being naked. Plays well with others!

Warmskin, I am always hesitant to get ensnared in discussions about The Proper Diet. I tend to agree with Michael Pollan's dictum: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” We've evolved from scavengers and hunter-gatherers, and can (and should) handle a variety of foods. I don't waste my time fretting over just the right balance of protein, carbs, fats, whatever. In the absence of clinical or laboratory evidence of a deficiency, I'm not a big fan of supplements. Most of them are of unproven benefit, particularly in people who eat a reasonable diet. A little extra D3 and folate aren't a bad idea, but, but I take mine in the form of a nice spinach quiche. More than any particular supplement or "miracle food", I'd just recommend Pollan's extremely flexible dietary guidelines, with the added admonition to get up off your big, fat ... chairs and get outside and move around a little. Every day. You don't have to be a dietary ascetic or a triathlon participant or even skinny to be healthy. And you don't have to eat kale!

Bill
You are a walking encyclopedia, well a forum participant encyclopedia.
Very interesting especially as we are now finally kicking into summer in Southern Oz. A hot Christmas coming up and I'm enjoying working and resting in my back yard naked in the afternoons. I have fair skin but due to some late afternoon sunning I've got some colour and I feel good, maybe it's all my imagination.
Mid year (mid winter here) I had some medical tests before we went overseas to Nepal. I was quite healthy but low vitamin D but not to the point where I needed medication. Talking to others the vitamin D deficiency seems very common. I guess it is being better understood and better diagnosed.
Cheers, stay warm up there. SBN.
