While browsing online I have noticed that there seems to be a cultural difference in attitudes to genital shaving.
I live in the UK, where although it is perfectly acceptable for a woman to shave her pubic hair, the idea of a man doing the same is still very taboo, and considered as some sort of perversion. However, it seems that in the USA shaving can be undertaken by up to 15% of men, and seems perfectly acceptable.
Am I correct in this observation, or is it just another misconception that the internet puts across regarding other countries?

In my case, so far, the only ones that think that shaved male genitals is okay are naturists or a couple of aquaintances (co-workers) that I know are into swinging.
I was in the shower this morning and washing my hair and the front of my body was exposed to the sink area of the head. A couple of guys I am working with today saw that I was shaved and began to giggle like little girls. It bothered me more that they were giggling and whispering to each other and these guys are in their late 30's, early 40's, very immature.
Not sure what main stream society here in the US really thinks about shaved male genitals but from this morning's experience, it's not as open minded as the UK.
and this is only my side of the story....there may be others that are more positive.

As I have remarked elsewhere at this site, shaving is increasingly common among both men and women. Hairstyles (on the head and elsewhere)always cause comments when the style is sufficiently different from one's own. The angst--or at least the number of posts--that shaving generates seems disproportionate.
As a physician, I am unconcerned with hairstyle or, for that matter, the natural pigment of their skin. I am far more concerned with their fitness and health.

I have been fully shaved about 2 years now, and live in USA. I would say in USA as well as UK as you say, still more acceptable for women to shave pubic area than men. My expereince at Nudist resorts and nude beaches has all been postive, I get puzzeled or unapproving comments at places like a big mixed clothed gym, or other non nudist oriended clothed places. Similar reaction to my shaved legs and arm pits by the way, removing body hair on men seems to be perceived by many as non masculine.
I would try it if you have not yet, can always grow it back, and life is more fun if you live as you like.

I have been completely shaven now for a least 5 years. We visit nude beaches often and it seems nude or just out and about the only comment I ever get is the fact that my legs are shaved. Women seem to like it, men seem to giggle. Funny hu!

Yea, shaving in the US nudist populations seem acceptable. And after talking to my nephews who are not nudist's body shaving is becoming popular in the teens to 20's crowds as well. One of my nephews shaves his arms, chest and privates. Another shaves his legs, leftover habit from high school where it was required for his sports activities.
Ive notice some women like it, and it seems like even more dont but think its ok for women to be shaved. I think to some degree women view body hair as a symbol of masculinity.
Sorry to hear its an issue in the UK.

This topic resurfaces with some regularity.
My particular role as a healthcare professional -- trauma surgeon-- demands that I see patients from all walks of life on an emergency basis.
At least in the USA, a significant fraction of people from every background choose to groom and more often than not completely shave axillary (armpit) and pubic (genital) hair. Whatever "acceptability" means, the practice is widespread.
There is the curious observation of the disappearing tan line. Of course, it's hard to know what that means in dark-skinned people who do not show evidence of any tanning. But among those who are tanning, it is now the exception that I see tan lines. Whatever their public position on nudity (or use of tanning beds, etc.) it is unusual to see tan lines any more. I did see some yesterday in an older man who was injured while on vacation near the Equator. But it caused me to reflect on how unusual the sight was.

. I think I'd attribute that trend to the more widespread use of tanning salons. Since about 5-6 years ago, I've seen large numbers of younger (30 & under) patrons coming & going from the local establishment next to my supermarket. From a comment made by teenagers, it seems to peak around prom time, as the girls are shopping for strapless gowns.
. I can't make the hypothesis for the guys.
People are such variable creatures, aren't we?

I think shaved men look great. I uess for women it's just a personal preference. Some of the women I know like it and some don't. I am one who likes the smooth look on men.

Shaved or unshaved, these are personal choices. Different cultures attach meaning to an assortment of things, including hair, that we in North America do not. I don't see a shaved male or female, or for that matter unshaved, and think anything about that person. It's like men shaving their heads, some heads were just not made for that look, but if that person is happy with it, great. In our culture we change looks and fashion by which way the wind blows, I don't see why it would be any different in the nudist culture. Being shave is been kind of the in thing for a while now. Some like it, some don't, personal I like it.

My wife and i have been totaly shaved for years,and have had know one comment on it,ozzies seem to have a know care attitude about genital shaving.We never get weired looks and at least 80% of the nudist places we visit in Australia most woman and men are shaven.

much more acceptable to be shaved for men now as evidenced at public beach last summer....Virtually ALL women were and at least 60 percent of men either shaved or very manscaped....rest natural or moderately manscaped (IC shaved balls)

Here in southern Oz I've noticed many men are now shaved or significantly trimmed like myself.
Most women too, although the numbers are low, but I did notice some big full bushes on some women. Not sure if that is a fight-back against the shaved look that people like to link to porn films but I personally feel nicer being shaved and having lost some weight I think most of us look better shaved or trimmed.
