It would be great if they could have it opened, but it doesn't sound like it is going to be a quick or easy task. My wife has been taking me there for my annual birthday present for the past 3 yrs. Guess I'll have to come up with something different. Now that I'm living in VA, I guess my present will have to be a trip to White Tail...it's only about an hour away, but we used to use Gunnison as a stop on our way up to upstate NY.

Happened to see a video recently from Sea Bright. The mayor was saying that rebuilding for the upcoming summer was absolutely crucial, as the local economy is entirely dependent on the beach-season.
I'm pretty sure that the NPS feels the same about SH. I have a relative who is employed by the former, and he told me that the money generated by beach-goers to SH is like life-or-death to the entire Gateway operation, and that getting it ready for another summer is absolutely paramount to it.
Hope he's right!

I KNOW I read somewhere either on the Gateway NRA site or their Facebook page that they were making plans for the future use of volunteer labor. I just can't find it now!

I hope that you get your beach back up and running. I was going to suggest coming to visit Lighthouse Beach on Long Island's Fire Island as so many people from New York City do. Unfortunately our beach has been destroyed too, and now the National Park Service has discontinued Clothing optional use an all of Fire Island.

That makes perfect sense: close the beach because it's too crowded... Yogi Berra would love the logic employed.
The solution is of course to increase Ranger presence there. Then, they'll keep their cash-cow intact and reduce the number of losers who visit it, all in one fell swoop.

I heard that they will be opening 3 beaches in May, with gunnison being one of them and there will be a very low limit as to how many cars will be allowed in. I havent heard if gunnison will stay clothing optional yet.

That's good to hear, even if it will be possibly limited to how many cars are admitted to the park. I wonder if they will be asking at the gate which beach you are going to in order to maintain some control...keep us posted.
