Well, not to rain on the parade, but we just returned from two full days there, and I have a couple of observations:

1.The usual Gawker Squad members-every single one of the usual suspects-were present over the past couple of days, and as committed as ever to tirelessly wandering the sand as closely as possible to whatever females they could spot with their dimming eyesight.

2.Today there were probably 1,000+ people there, and still I would estimate the crowd's median age seemed a bit older than usual.(At least 60 or so.)

Not that any of the above it matters much.If you go to Gunnison looking for perfect physical beauty or youth, you are definitely barking up the wrong tree.

The unusually warm sea and the sunshine were in attendance,though...And that's what it's all about.

I was down yesterday, July 2, and brought my girlfriend for her first ever visit to Gunnison. There was no way we were passing such a gorgeous beach day up. After an hour and a half of being there, she finally joined in, and became part of the nudist world. She said it was the most free she has ever felt, and can't imagine going to any other beach after her experience there. The crowd was large (as expected for the holiday weekend), and very well behaved. The sun was warm, the water temp was higher than we expected for this time of year, and the ocean very calm. I saw a healthy mix of ages, as young as infant, to over 70, and seemed like everyone was there for the right reasons. One can only hope this is a new breed of beach goer, and the trend continues all summer. Every beach will have it's idiots, and we just have to deal with them in the best way we can. Next trip is most likely on Sat. See you all, and all of you, there. BareNJ

I was there a week ago and noticed more younger people too. I'm not saying the scales are tipping, just that I noticed more who looked under 40 than in the past. Didn't see any gawkers either. The annoyances came from people playing loud music, a high wind screen being set up very close in front of me, and a cigar man. I understand why people use windscreens but if you have to set it up at somebody else's feet then maybe you should think about going further back on the beach. It seems that the cliques you see across the beach are getting larger. As more people arrive and join their friends they set up another windscreen and connect it to the windscreens already there. If it happens to fall directly in front of somebody else's blanket, the heck with them. They aren't part of the clique anyway. A point came where I packed up and moved. Thats what you have to do sometimes, then the day was pleasant.

Schroder,

In the last couple years we have been seeing the scales tipping at Apollo in Florida where we go. We have been seeing a lot more young people in their 20s and 30s, even a few in their teens.

Seems like there is hope for the future.

Public nudity is not so much a big deal to today's 20-something generation as it was to previous ones,IMO.

To some extent this is part and parcel of a hypersexualization of American society, perhaps, but in the net,it bodes well for CO beaches.(Some fine day maybe I won't have to drive 4 hours just to get to one!)

Younger people are hearing about Gunnison on the internet. The fact that this topic is 90 pages long, with mixed, but mostly positive reviews, lets people know what to expect. The fear of the unknown has been removed.

Me and my wife were there on the fourth. It was a great day with calm warm waves. We saw some dude using a windscreen to hide the fact that he was masturbating while looking at naked women. About an hour later 2 women wearing bikinis joins his camp. We found it VERY strange that the guy didn't masturbate in front of them. And why come to a nude beach wearing a bikini? WEIRD.

The wife and I were there on Tuesday. Alot more people than usual for a weekday. I guess vacation time and recent news article has something to do with it.We saw a few families there but alot more clothed people than normal. It was obvious that most of them were first timers by the way they were acting. Most of them were in their 20's but some seemed younger. We are heading back down today and hopefully another day this week, probably Friday.

For my own part, I think I would probably turn somebody in if I ever witnessed masturbation or any other kind of lewd or sexual activity. I'd get a ranger or a lifeguard, whoever was closer. Why? Well I don't mean to ruin somebody's good times or be nasty about things like that but I think we need to consider the consequences. If that stuff became more frequent and people start thinking that it's OK to do, that will lead to the end of the clothing optional privilege at Gunnison. I think the few who try things like that have to be stopped before it becomes more widespread and visible on the beach. They will get charged for lewdness too. Fortunately I don't believe that I've ever seen anything along those lines.

We are hoping to go this Saturday as well, but we have to bring the kids again (no babysitter). We were there last weekend with the kids too. Good crowd, occasional foul language, the party people next to us only got crazy once for five minutes but I guess it is an adult beach. The guy had a piano/keyboard, speakers, he sounded really great but these guys are nuts lugging all that crap down there.

I'm sad--Sunday's weather report looks better than Saturday but my wife has to work on Sunday

Sean

I agree with you, waterboy. We were there Sat. and couldn't believe that those guys transported all that stuff from the parking lot. You have to be nuts doing that. I understand people bring alot when they plan on being there sunrise to sunset, but to me thats over board. I'm all for enjoying the beach, and they are very good musicians, but where does it end. Still, rather have that, than some of the people that put up 25 yards of windscreens for 2 people, or worse, the people that erect tents right in the middle of the beach once it starts getting crowded. Stay in the rear if you need that stuff, and give us that want to see the ocean, a pleasant view.

I wouldn't want to hear a friggin' Beatles reunion on the beach, let alone those has-been Narcissists busting up the quiet as they look in vain for attention from women half their age(s).

(And I hate radios out there, too.)

All I want to hear is the birds squawking and the waves crashing. That is beach-music,IMO.

Oh I don't know. A little "toes in the water ass in the sand" (zack brown band) is always a good tune for the beach :)

Probably just me getting old and cranky, but ANY radio/IPOD music grates on my nerves while I'm on the beach,as compared to hearing the oystercatchers' calls and the mere sound of waves crashing ashore.(Nothing personal to any of the above posters,BTW.)

We always select our site in terms of the absence of ambient noise,if we can find such a place.(And then, some perpetually adolescent 55-year-old shows up within 10 feet or so to bless us with his lame radio.)

Last I checked,Seaside Heights is still open to anyone who wants to relive his youth.PLEASE go there,if you need to have blaring music to announce who you are to the world.(Nobody cares, believe me.)

KEEP/MAKE GUNNISON QUIET AND NATURAL!

Hi....anyone have any experience staying at Sandy Hook Cottages? We've heard that they allow nudity in their hot tub but we'd like to get the real story from someone who's stayed there.

We're contemplating a return trip to Gunnison this August, and hope to spend a few nights there close to the beach.

We are heading to Gunnison tomorrow (Sunday 7/24). We did not make it out at all last year and sadly this will be our first trip this year.

Can anyone comment on how quickly the lots are filling up on Sundays? We are planning on getting there between 8:00 and 9:00am, but as it's a 2 1/2 hour drive "stuff" can happen. I just don't want to drive that far and get shut out!

The other question I have is regarding the Plover nesting. Does anyone know if the southern part of the beach is still closed for the birds? One of my favorite things to do at a beach is to just walk along the surf line, so the farther I can go, the happier I am!

Thankfully stuff in our lives have quieted down to the point that we should be able to get to Gunnison more often the balance of the Summer.
