Hi All; Looking for suggestions for tanning oils or lotion. Was using Nude Beach Tan but they seem to have gone missing. No spf stuff that's for wimps.

I use only a 45 SPF. It's not for wimps; it's for people who are concerned about their skin and possible side effects of broiling in the sun. I use NoAD 45 for Babies as it's less greasy than many of the others.

As some one who has dealt with a minor skin cancer in of all places the corner of my eye lid, I can tell you that spf sun tan lotions are false hope. My doctor, who treated me, told me it's how you manage the amount of sun you recieve. Burning is a no- no. If you monitor the amount of sun you get, the longer you can stay in the sun as you tan. Basically what he told me is as your tan progresses the lower your likelyhood of burning. The idea of using any type of lotion, no matter the spf, is to not cook the nature oil your skin produces out of your skin. Spf lotions give people the believe they can stay in the sun longer then they actually should. My doctors advice was as follows- Always use some sort of lotion, does not have too be spf, before you go in the sun to tan. If you are new to the nudist way, only be in the sun for about 20 minutes the first time. You can increase your time in the sun by 5 or 10 minutes a day, but monitor the color of your skin, everyone tans or burns at a different rate. If your skin is red( not peeling) stay out of the sun till the redness goes away. Once you are brown you can then spend longer periods of time in the sun. Your chances of burning demission with the darkness of your tan, but you must always use some type of lotion before and after being in the sun. He told me that too many people believe that if they lather of spf lotion they will not burn. As this is a great source to the first time nudist, I feel that we should provide facts not fiction. Spf's are fiction, you should manage your time in the sun wishly or you could end up with problems. I feel you are better of using non-spf products, and managing your time in the sun then applying some high spf product and relying on some false hope. Also remember just because your not red in the sun that two hours latter you could be red and burnt. Depending on the degree of your burn, read peeling, you could be done for that entire summer season. As a side note both myself and my doctor do not feel that the MINOR problem I had wasn't caused by the sun. I do a large amount of welding, high uv's, and while tacking welds I use the famous turn your head and close your eyes method. No face mask, you think the sun is high uv's, try a welder.

Hi Prairie Nude, that is one FANTASTIC post. It should become a sticky on some part of this site and every site for nudists/naturists! I have only ever burned once and I learned the lesson. I use an spf4 cream but only for its moisturizing qualities. IMHO if someone is a nudist and wants to enjoy the outdoors in complete freedom and do it for life without problems, the only approach is what you suggested. Thanks again. I hope everyone reads it.

About twenty years ago, we had a shut down on a job for about 5 hours. It was very hot and sunny, so while we were waiting I took my shirt off. I was aready tanned but I guess not good enough. I burnt my back so bad I couldn't lift my arms over my head. I had to shut down and leave the job. When I got home I went to my doctor, I was so burnt my back blistered several times. My doctor told me that I could not tan my back for several years while my skin repaired it's self, and that I would always have to be careful not to reburn again. Being a nudist is an enjoyable thing but you must be careful to take care of your skin if your going to be out in the sun. I wouldn't wish a burn like I had that time on my worst enemy. All I want to do is forewarn other people to manage their enjoyment in the sun, nudism should be fun and enjoyable not deadly. Spf is suppose to allow you more time in the sun. How much time? I'd rather time my sun exposure then wait for the smell of bacon cooking before I decide I've over shoot the spf safety limits. If you are nude in the sun lots by mid summer I can usually spend the day in the yard with no fear of burning. Just be sure to keep applying what ever lotion or oil you choose to keep your skin moist and not burn off your natural oils. If you get a little red, NOT BURNT, that's normal. I would still suggest you back off for a day or two to give your skin a chance to settle down. If you burn slightly, back off till the burn settles right down. Then start from scratch, and rebuild your tan. If you burn and blister even minorly, I'd say you better be really careful for the rest of the season, and limit your sun exposure. Truth be told I stay out of the sun, till the next season. JUST BE CAREFUL!

The SPF factor does help. I work at a Sch. of Medicine & attended a Cancer seminar last year, we have a local, well known Cancer Center here. One of the presented papers was on sunscreen. It does help, but only when it is still on the surface of the skin. People don't understand that they cannot stay out in the sun indefinitely with the sunscreen. That's where they go wrong. I wear a 45 SPF sunscreen most days even if it's cloudy outside. I also don't lay out or sit out in the sun, always in the shade and wear a hat and sun glasses.

Okay....what about in and out of the pool? Do you need to put new screen on after swimming? How about before going in, do you need to take another shower?

It depends on if the sunscreen is waterproof. Some of them are but if only it's a quick swim. If you do re-apply, it's only polite that you taken not only another shower, but a soap shower. The oils do tend to yuck-up the filter and if there's enough oil in the pool, an awful film ends up floating on the pool's surface. Cheri

First off let me just say thanks to everyone for contributing to this discussion. I think the info here is really important and some very good advice offered. One thing I will mention, and this may have been mentioned earlier, is to apply whatever sunscreen you are going to use at least 20 min PRIOR to exposure to the sun if you want it to do it's job. As mentioned by another poster here sunscreen just extends the amount of time you can be out in the sun without burning. But everyones skin is different so you have to know your limitations regarding the amount of time you can be out in the sun and like it says on the bottle reapply often and after swimming.

I too agree that spf's have their benefits. I just want people to realize coating your virgin skin with spf 40 or 80 or what ever is not the do all end all. As stated by Nude Al all people tan at a different rate. Slow and easy is the best method no matter what you use, but use something. As someone who has tanned for years and years, I always have some left over tan from the previous summer. I always start from scratch as if it's my first time ever to tan. Yes my tan comes back quick, but I'm still careful. For myself I prefer to not use spf products. I use products such as I stated to start with that set a deep tan, and relay on setting time limit for my exposure to the sun. It may take longer for your tan to start, but you don't damage your skin. Truth be told any tanning is going to age your skin, but careful management can lessen the effects.

My 2cents: 1. Even if your sunscreen is waterproof/sweatproof, it isn't towel proof. If you rub with a towel to dry off, you will remove some of it. 2. I agree with the idea of managing your time in the sun. Don't burn, tan evenly and slowly. There are benefits to the sun. For example, you get vitamin D from the sun. As you darken, the melanin in your skin provides some degree of SPF, which is what the darkening of your skin is for. (I just heard from a dermatologist that black people have a natural SPF of 500, so they should get vitamin D from other sources as well.)

I have fair skin and burn easily. When I was growing up, I had quite a few sunburns. Now, I am apparently paying the price. I have had one skin cancer cut out of my hand and expect to have more over the years. They say that skin cancer may not show up for 20 years; that your beautiful tan at 17 will haunt you after 40. I love doing things outdoors, live in the Southeast near a beach, and spend about 4 hours a day outside. I'm a believer in SPF but agree that all it does is extend the time you can be in the sun. I would love to find a lotion/cream that would truely block the sun. I believe them when they say a tan is just skin damage.

I am not going to repeat the same thing said by many in this form. There is a lot of very valuable information. Being in Canada of course I become very white over the winter and when late spring rolls around I get back into tanning slowly to make sure I don't burn. I have always liked the oils better than the lotions. I find they keep the skin softer.

You can also just apply the oil after you shower to keep the skin soft as well. Regards, Cheri

Skin cancer apparently runs in my family, and being a redhead, I'm very careful to take care of my skin. I try very hard not to burn, and have a dermatologist on the payroll because I have rosacea as well.
One thing he's been very adament about is sunscreen. He doesn't want me to leave the house without at least an SPF 15 on my face because of the ointment I use to treat the rosacea, but when I'm in the sun, I have to use a 30 or higher, and reapply often regardless of waterproofing. I've found I can stay out longer if I reapply about every 45 minutes to an hour. It's a pain but I really prefer that to skin cancer.
I don't remember who it was that said to apply 20 minutes prior to leaving the house, but that's exactly what my doctor said as well, so that your skin is prepped.
