Wednesday, Aprill 11th at 9AM in in Columbia in the Blatt Building at the corner of Assembly and Pendleton in Room 515-A this bill will again be heard in front of the General Laws Subcommittee.

The more warm bodies, the better. I will be speaking. You need not. Please let me know if you'll be there. I have spoken to this Committee and will add more when I speak next week. I will be bringing a position statement from AANR with me.

Today's Judiciary committee meeting was interesting. The H.3679 was
the last bill on the agenda to be heard. The chairman of that committee
knows who I am and nodded hello before the proceedings started. There
was some banter among the committee members about an ammendment other
than what I proposed to this bill. Some wanted to send that ammendment along w/the bill
to the Criminal Laws subcommittee. There was a voice vote yea/nay, and
I had difficulty hearing the difference and would have probably called
for a role call vote. However Rep. Harrison say the yeas have it, and
the bill was sent to the Criminal Laws subcommittee where we can once
again speak up and show our concerns. Let's hope we have ample notice
to be heard. Representative Weeks (with whom I have a good
relationship) said it may just die.
When the entire committee meets, it is not a hearing, you cannot
speak. So, this is good for us. After the meeting broke up, I spoke with
three of the legislators with whom I had not previously spoken
personally, just emailed. One of them acknowledged the ammendment I presented
and said it made sense, but the bill was sent to the full committee so
quickly nothing was done with it. Now we have a chance. Another
legislator mentioned that he didn't know we had nudist clubs in SC.
Needless to say, I handed him a business card. :) One of the State
newspaper reporters also was handed a card as was an AP reporter who
interviewed me. We'll see what becomes and how acurately it's handled.

I do hope at that time we have more nudists in attendance especially
those with affiliations and ownership in the landed clubs.

:) Cheri

I must have missed some earlier posts about this bill. Cheri, can you post a brief explanation of what the bill is about?

This was the notice posted elsewhere
http://www.scstatehouse.net/sess117_2007-2008/bills/3679.htm

South Carolina HB 3679 – Update
SC HB 3679 is something we thought was dead since the subcommittee did not bring
it into the full committee last year. It's not the bill itself that is
troublesome; it's the definitions that should be an issue to every nudist. Bills
like this one that confuse sexual oriented businesses with simple nudity could
impact nude recreation as we enjoy it today. Last year, Representative Talley
said we should offer an amendment. Cheri Alexander emailed that out to each of
the subcommittee members, but nothing was done, and the session was over.

It was re-introduced this year, and it was heard on Thursday morning, March 27th
at 9AM in the General Laws subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee. The
hearing went poorly. Only one non-affiliated nudist showed up to accompany
Cheri. This bill will be heard again by the full Judiciary Committee on April
1st at 2:30PM. This bill can affect landed clubs/parks if the definitions are
not amended and subsequently, could affect non-landed clubs too. Please email
Cheri Alexander at cheridonna@prodigy.net with your intentions. Cheri has your
"I'm a nudist and I vote" button. Your presence will make a difference. PLEASE,
ONLY SC RESIDENTS!

How did the hearing go? With the large number of legitimate child protection efforts nationwide, constant effort will need to be expended in monitoring legeslative agendas and bill language. Thanks for all you and your fellow AANR members are doing to provide clarity and guidance on appropriate bill language.

It was heard 2 additional times. Can you believe only two people showed up?!! People don't understand, granted the bill isn't aimed at nudists or nudist parks, but once the bill is passed, the constabulary can decide for itself what its meaning is.

Happily, debate was postponed until May 1st at which time, it would be considered virtually dead as it would not have time to get to the full committee and then the full House followed by passage or not in the Senate. I keep checking the bills coming daily; I just don't trust the politicians.
