Granted I know that Hollywood has a much different opinion of what is and isn't nudity. But I have seen a number of movies where the viewing audiance was warned that there is nudity in it.

Only to have it turn out to be about "5-seconds" worth of bare breasts or a bare backside. I'm sorry, I don't the rest of you, but to me that isn't nudity. At most that is partial nudity. In order for it to qualify as nudity in my book and actor or actress would have to be fully nude on camera for longer then a handfull of seconds.

And there still isn't much, other then a bare backside male nudity. When is there outside of the porn industry going to be as much male nudity in movies as there is female nudity?

I also have to laugh at some of the TV shows that likewise warn of containing nudity and again it's either a bare backside or a breast in shadow.

It's all about "hitting it big" at the box office. A full frontal scene more than a couple of seconds long could potentially land a movie an NC-17 rating, which is considered in Holywood to be box-office "suicide." So directors trim nude scenes to a minimum in order to please the producers and ensure profit margins. A recent example of this was the movie "Closer", where Natalie Portman had an extended fully nude scene; the director cut the scene completely because he didn't want to "shock" his producers. Long gone are the days of taking risks in order to make a statement, as they did in the 60's and 70's (except for some European movies which still feature extended nude scenes.)
I think this "quick nudity" trend is here to stay; or until a bold new director decides to remain faithful to his/her vision..

I recently watched an old (1974) movie with John Cleese and Connie Booth called "Romance with a Double Bass" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0072095/).

It's short but fun!

Sally... I tend to agree with your observation though.

Sally is right, there isn't much male nudity in Hollywood. Even in Europe it is fairly unusual to see a male nude in a movie. In the UK, some newspapers carry photos of topless females. They are sometimes extremely close to nude, in tiny lace underwear that leaves almost nothing to the imagination. The same papers have tried pics of men not wearing very much, but they stopped it. I'm not a fan of either, they are all of "perfect" bodies and in what I consider a mildly sexual context. I don't see it has much to do with naturism.

I would feel more comfortable in a cinema watching a movie that had an equal amount of male and female nudity, if it is shown, it should be reasonably balanced.

Maybe there isn't much male nudity because there is little demand for it, nor acceptance of it in a true to life context. The penis is still taboo.

The funniest example of nudity in a UK TV comedy was in the BBC series "Little Britain". A man walks out of his front door wearing nothing. He hesitates, turns round and goes back inside. Moments later he emerges again, holding his briefcase and he walks off down the street to work.

The film rating system, as mentioned by Nudony, seems to be the key and if you look at the criteria, they mix up nudity and sexuality. Maybe an AANR team could take it on as a project to get nudity evaluated in a more intelligent way.

Meanwhile, there is a rating appeal process and it would be very interesting sometime for someone to produce a film where completely nonchalant nudity was intertwined with the storytelling and could be defended against overly harsh ratings.

Films both reflect and can have a huge impact on public attitudes. It was afterall Clark Gable's appearance that signaled that the uncovered male chest was ok.

Anybody have ideas for an appropriate script? How about a sort of "Home Alone 5" where the family holiday in Spain includes clothes-free beach days?

Nudity does seem to be less frequent in the movies, or perhaps less show and a more "claim" in the reviews. A few of my favorites:
1. Women in Love: 1969 Glenda Jackson is the only oscar winner to have full frontal nudity scene. Oliver Reed and Alan Bates have a nude wrestling scene.
2. What do you say to a naked lady? Good old fashion Alan Fundt (sp?)humor with both male and femal nudity
3. Sirens: A preacher and his wife spend time at an artists home also with both male and female nudity.

Both gender exposure should be more common to represent the true ratio of the genders...equal representation!

I agree with Diode here. I was just looking through Amazon and discovered the wide variety of books and other media featuring female nudes. While I certainly like female nudes, I feel uncomfortable that we do not see even a rough approximation of the same variety of books and media featuring male nudes. It may be discrimination; there is a well established literature on male objectification of the female body. It may also be the market, either because of the foregoing or because female bodies are objectively more attractive and therefore sell better. I saw many books of photography featuring female artists photographing females. But it seems as if the appreciation of the nude male form gets relegated to the gay genre, which makes no sense at all. I would be much more comfortable, personally, if there was some rough approximation of gender balance as was the case in Michelangelo's time. Cannot the male nude be as interesting, and thus as provocative to an artist's imagination, as the female nude? Gender balance would be great!

I'm surprised no one mentioned it sooner, but in my experience, probably the greatest movie to showcase nudity in its purest for is a movie called "Blue Lagoon". It came out in the summer of 1980 and it stars a young Brooke Shields. It is one of my favorite all time movies, great cinimatography. Starts out with a burning ship, and our 2 main characters, a young boy and girl, stranded in a lifeboat with a typical old salt of the sea. The wash up on an island where the old man eventually dies, leaving these innocent kids to basically figure out survival, when theirmain life experience has been learning etiquette. Its a great comming of age story, with some beautiful underwater shots of them swimming nude as they reach young adulthood. Theres a great juxtaposition where when they first reach the island the sailor is trying to get them to wash themselves in the sea but they wont take thier clothes off, and after some time passes the sailor is running down the beach trying to get them to put their clothes back on. You all should go out and rent it!!

Actually, I would argue that one of the best movies to showcase nudity in "its purest form" is actually the 1971 coming of age movie "Walkabout". You can read the synopsis below. The difference between "Walkabout" and the "Blue Lagoon" is that the nudity is not mostly implied; in "Walkabout", it is completely shown in several scenes. It is interesting to note that the movie drew a PG rating in spite of full frontal nudity from its protagonists, who were 17 and about 11 at the time. How we have changed...

On a side note: I watched "The Break-up" last night, with Jen Anniston. The movie had a nudity warning, so I got a bit curious. Well, the scene was about 2 seconds long, with a blurry nude backside shot of Jen Anniston. What a joke!

Thats right, I had totally forgotten about Walkabout. That was another great one. Somewhat parallel to Blue Lagoon, yet completely opposite. Did we miss any??

Walkabout and Blue Lagoon were great films. Does anybody remember "Women in Love" with the scene with the late Oliver Reed and for the life of me I cannot remember the other male actors name. They were wrestling totally nude on front of a roaring fire on a mansion. Plenty of full frontal there!!!
