I happened across someone from Japan who has created a web site listing 100 of the best mixed-gender onsens in Japan. I did not realize that there were very many such onsens but it turns out that a surprising number of them exist. Most of the text is Japanese but for the few available in English, I could see that they indeed have mixed gender bathing available. The web sites seem to have all the very classic Japanese aesthetic and they seem quite nice. Many clearly also have Japanese style traditional lodging available as well.
Great post! Many times I visited onsens when I was stationed in Korea 1954-55 and went to Japan on R&R and again when my family lived in Japan from 1969-71. We lived in Tottori-ken, Yonago-shi and traveled extensively throughout Japan visiting many indoor and outdoor onsens.
