Playa Sonrisa is one of our all-time favorite nude venues. Yes, it's out in the middle of nowhere at the bottom of the Yucatan. Yes, they're mostly off the grid, and the power supply can be sketchy. And no, there isn't much in the way of nightlife. Doesn't matter. The beach and the water are superb, and the sense of isolation ensures that the guests are people who have done their homework and really WANT to be there. Cindy and Murph wrought a small miracle when they put Sonrisa together, and have been the perfects hosts. (See Tripadvisor if you don't want to take my word for it.) But in an article in a recent issue of 'N' magazine, they indicated that they are ready to sell the property and, presumably, repatriate. To their credit, they are determined to seek out buyers who will keep Sonrisa clothing-optional before they put it on the open market. If only I was younger and richer and remembered more of my high school Spanish! I hope they succeed in finding an enlightened new owner, but I can't say I'm optimistic. Despite the cheerleading of AANR, it strikes me that the number of clothing-optional venues is dwindling. Cindy and Murph aren't the only ones looking at retirement, and the nudist demographic just seems to be getting older.

Having said that ... I would encourage, implore, beg anyone with even the slightest sense of adventure to visit Playa Sonrisa while you still can. Not only do they deserve our support, but I can testify to the wonderful experience you will find there. And who knows? Maybe someone from NRO will fall in love with the place and decide to keep it going.

Sounds like a good reason to go to Mexico, sadly it's a long way away. Another one for the bucket list. SBN.

We just returned from a week at Playa Sonrisa last Wednesday, our 9th visit. We had one of the best weeks there ever, mostly due to the wonderful new friends we made (and perfect weather). Murph is ready to sell, but patient. Having said that, 2018 would be a great year to make that trip to the "nude beach at the end of the world" A strong year of bookings from naturists only increases the chances that a potential buyer can put together a viable "nude friendly" business plan

We visited Hidden Beach this past summer. Playa Sonrisa was quite a ways south of us and if we had stayed at HBR longer, I would have like to rent a car and make the drive. We are members of HBR's vacation club and will return for at least a week and probably longer on our next visit and hopefully, the current owners will still own the place or the new owners keep it clothing optional.

Where did you fly into and how did you get to Playa Sonrisa?

FireProf, We have always flown in to Cancun, then rented a car and driven to Xcalak, sometimes breaking up the drive with a night or two in Tulum. It's a long, but not difficult drive. The traffic lets up dramatically after Playa del Carmen. We had Thanksgiving dinner reservations at the Leaky Palapa (amazing restaurant run by Canadian expats in Xcalak) and pushed hard to get there from Cancun..made it in just over five hours.

Coming back, our flights aligned so that we made it from breakfast at Playa Sonrisa, to home in Kansas in one day's travel. First time that has happened. My preference, if not pressed for time, is spending a few nights in Tulum on each leg. Intima Resort in Tulum is a great clothing optional option for that.

Yikes ... 5 hours! Yup ... I'd be looking to spend the night somewhere in between. HBR is only an hour and 20 or 30 mins from the airport and that would make the next leg a bit long. Tulum sounds like a better 1/2 way point!

Thanks for the info!

I am seething with jealous rage at prairieflya's NINE visits to Playa Sonrisa. But he's right about the drive. Once you're out of Cancun, it's a piece of cake other than a slowdown (and those damn 'topes', a brutal form of speed bump) around Playa del Carmen. HBR, PdC, or Tulum would be fine as a halfway point, as would one of the dozens of villas for rent along the coast. Driving the last couple of miles from Xcalak to Playa Sonrisa will definitely give you a good story to tell the folks back home, but it's manageable ... at 5 mph. But don't let the drive deter you. For the right sort of person - one who wants something other than the "Hyatt With Your Pants Off" experience at HBR - it is totally worth it.

I found Playa Sonrisa three or four years ago online. It sounded very nice but when I found out they were off the grid I just wasn't interested. Now I wish I had given it a chance.

Diger, "off the grid" doesn't mean camping, They have a generator and solar power, and we never felt starved for electricity. That said, Ms. ND and I weren't as attached to our phones and tablets as people seem to be today. We had books to read, music to listen to, and people to talk with. If, on the other hand, people want to spend vacation hours on Facebook or binge-watching Game of Thrones, PSR is probably not a great choice.

Hey Doc,

How 'bout cell phone service. We can certainly do without our tablet and social media but like to stay connected to home in case of emergencies.

At the time we were there - 10 years ago - we couldn't get any signal at PSR and only a sketchy one in Xcalak. However, time marches on, and there might be cell service now, especially now that the cruise port to the north has re-opened. Perhaps prairieflya can enlighten us, since he's been there recently. Or you could email Cindy and Murph and ask them directly.

No cell service, but the WIFI is reasonably reliable. We stay in touch with home via email and Facebook while we are down there. There is adequate solar and generator power for water pumps, lights and keeping your "e-devices" charged. No hairdryers, A/C or coffee-pots, though.

It all works pretty well as long as you are mindful of electricity and water as being finite resources, and that there are consequences for wasting them....which is not a bad life lesson to learn.

As long as they can keep the beer cold, I'll do without my cell phone! Thanks, flya!
