Statistics and Facts on Nudism, Nudist Resorts and Clothing Optional Businesses

Do you know any verifiable statistics useful to a presentation on nudist resorts or nudism in general?

Exactly what are those interesting facts people use when arguing for nudism?

If you add something here, please INCLUDE LINKS to the original information, so we can keep this list up to date and verified!

Let's see, wasn't there a Roper Poll or two...?

A website that may help here, at least in some tangential ways is http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php

They have all sorts of statistics on the site. I was trying to find the statistics about teen sexuality. The claim being that nudity leads to sex. What statistics show, however is that countries that have a more relaxed attitude toward nudity have a lower teen pregnancy rate and a higher age of first sexual experience.

This page does speak to that (to a point): http://www.baby-parenting.com/pregnancy/teen_pregnancy_statistics.html

The only caveat is that some of this may be societal rather than just the nudity.

Here are some factoids I use in my lectures:
In 1983, 72% of Americans approved of nude beaches. In a recent poll, that is up to 80% in a 2000 poll.

The ‘83 poll also said that 15% of Americans have joined in co-ed Nude recreation.

The ‘83 poll also stated that 25% of young Americans enjoyed sunning or swimming nude. The newer poll suggests that more than 51 million, up from 33 million, have at one time or other enjoyed skinny dipping.

At least 161 million Americans support our rights to our lifestyle.

I believe these are from TNS's Roper poll.

I found a few interesting things. I don't know how useful any of it will be in presenting arguments for a CO business, but I'm still exploring.

Statistics from a British Naturism Briefing Paper:
http://british-naturism.org.uk/mediacentre/files/briefing_statistics 2 .pdf
Very good statistics, but British. I'm looking for American and other counterparts.

NudistExplorer.com
http://www.nudistexplorer.com/nlink04.htm
I haven't explored enough to find actual statistics, but lots of other cool info.

National Nude Registry
http://www.cheef.com/local/archive/nnr/
I have no idea how accurate, up-to-date, or serious this even is, but it's American, and it has pie charts.

Cheri mentioned the NEF/Roper Poll (this is 2006):
http://www.naturisteducation.org/Projects/NEF-Roper_Poll_2006/nef-roper_poll_2006.html

And here's some 1999 info on Canadian attitudes:
http://www.fcn.ca/report-e.pdf

I'm getting a headache looking. Maybe I'll look later.

I really haven't found a jackpot of information for the U.S.. If I find enough to compile all the really interesting stuff, maybe I'll make my own page citing sources and put that link here.

Have fun.
Ciao.

Links are helpful, thanks.

Even better would be to provide a link, and quote that interesting factoid right here, so no one has to click click click.

This just came across the wire, which was included in a comment by the Exec Dir of AANR on the recent Pasco concerns. He mentioned some of the material presented to the Commissioners included:

"...a FL Trend article citing Pasco Tourism Council figures that show more than 12% of visitors come to the county to enjoy clothes free resorts."

I cannot yet find a link for it.

Here it is-

Item number two of the Executive Summary of the PROFILE OF VISITORS TO PASCO COUNTY, FLORIDA of July 2006 states:

2. Primary reasons for visiting the County were: attending special events (23%), beaches/sun/parks (20%), visiting friends and relatives (VFR) (16%), clothing optional resorts (12%), and sightseeing/scenery (6%). Therefore, the largest tourism market segment is festivals/events followed by beaches/sun/parks and then VFR.

From The American Association for Nude Recreation's The Cyber-Bulletin - Volume 4, Issue 2 (02-20-2004)

Poll Shows Maryland Voters Favor Nude Sunbathing

A February poll conducted by Gonzales Research and Marketing Strategies of Annapolis shows strong support for legalization of nude sunbathing at the Assateague National Seashore. The poll asked 818 registered Maryland voters, "If there were sufficient signage posted to notify those who wish to avoid the area, would you favor or oppose allowing nude sunbathing on an isolated area of Assateague Island beach?" Statewide 48% of voters said they would favor nude sunbathing in an isolated area. The Washington suburbs were even more supportive of legalized nudity on Assateague: 62% supported the measure, while just 29% opposed it.

Cheapflights.co.uk uncovers the naked truth
Company News

London 18 September, 2008: Research reveals a trend towards nudity as increasing numbers of holiday makers prefer to strip off on the beach.

According to recent figures, participation in nudism is growing by 20 percent annually*. A recent poll from Cheapflights.co.uk also shows that ten percent of its viewers would choose to leave their clothes behind on holiday.

If you’re among those anti-clothing travellers and would like to be fully stripped of your inhibitions by getting your kit off on holiday; follow Cheapflights.co.uk’s latest guide to the world’s best Nude Beaches.

For such a carefree practice, the assumption would be that there are no rules. However, even the most freeing experiences require some diplomacy, starting with the correct “lingo”.

There are two kinds of nude beaches, which have two different names. On the first kind of nude beach, guests are actually obliged to de-clothe or face being thrown out as was the case with Sharon and Kelly Osborne, who were kicked off precisely such a beach in Majorca in 2007 for refusing to disrobe. This kind of beach is termed quite simply a “nude beach”.

The second kind allows guests the option to be either naked or clothed and the PC term for this kind of environment is “clothing-optional”. This kind of beach would probably be more suited to the likes of Matthew McConaughey, the hunky actor who is an infamous naturist. Although he has yet to be spotted naked on a beach, he was arrested for playing the bongos in his backyard in all his naked glory. Apparently neighbours complained he made too much noise.

Those who enjoy the offerings of nude or clothing-optional beaches are referred to as either hedonists, naturists or nudists. However, you do not have to be any of the above to enjoy a skinny dip in your birthday suit. Sienna Miller and Britney Spears, who have been spotted on nude beaches the world over, serve as two fine samples of this fact as they certainly don’t fit the naturist category, but clearly enjoy some tan-line free sun.

The next set of rules pertains to behaviour. Gawking, photography, filming and lewd behaviours are not tolerated and will result in the offender being asked to leave. Many nude beaches are also divided into different sections including family, singles, couples, and gay so before you imprint your posterior into the sand, do a bit of investigation to identify your naked preference.

The advantages of getting your kit off are plentiful and include lighter luggage so no excess baggage charges, no concerns over shopping for a new beach wardrobe – good money saved during the current credit crunch, smoother skin as sand is a natural exfoliant, and if you’re in a couple stripping off is proven to heighten sensuality. There aren’t many disadvantages to going nude, but watch out for getting sand up your bum as things could get itchy, and try to avoid all over sunburn, ouch.

Nadine Hallak, Travel Expert for Cheapflights.co.uk says, “Although I don’t personally intend on swapping my bikini for my white bits anytime soon, I have encountered many a skinny dipper in my time and the most important piece of advice I’ve gleaned is that sunblock is essential, particularly for those with sensitive skin like myself. And if you’ve already burnt any areas where the sun doesn’t normally shine, some effective natural remedies include milk compresses, refrigerated Aloe Vera gel, and/or bathing in lavender oil. Failing that, you could always reach for some anti-inflammatory tablets.”

For those keen to experience nature in their natural state, some of the best nudist beaches include Playa El Mago in Majorca, Sweetwater in Crete, and Valalta in Croatia.

For a full list of where to express your naked ambitions, visit www.cheapflights.co.uk/travel-tips/nude-beaches/, but remember to keep a sense of decorum as you wouldn’t want to be thrown out and be stripped of your dignity as well as your clothing.

Paradise nudist resort is sold
A homeowner at the Lutz property is reported to be the buyer.

By ERIN SULLIVAN
Published July 14, 2007

LUTZ - A Pasco nudist resort will be changing owners soon.

Joe Lettelleir owns - - Resort, a 72-acre, clothing-optional haven with about 400 residents in Lutz.

A woman who answered the phone at the resort Friday, who did not want to be quoted, said Lettelleir is selling the resort to a man named John Forier, who owns a home at Paradise and also lives in Martinique.

According to a story posted on the USA Nudist Web site, Lettelleir made the announcement June 30 at the - - Condominium Association general meeting.

The Paradise worker reached Friday said the final papers have not been signed, but the sale is expected to be completed in the next week.

She said Forier has plans for changes at the resort, but she said Forier would be the best to explain his vision for Paradise. Forier was not able to be reached Friday.

The Pasco Property Appraiser's Office lists the 15-acre - - resort with a current taxable value of $1.1-million.

Other area nudist resorts include - - Resort & Spa, the Oasis, Lake Como Family Nudist Resort, Gulf Coast Nudist Resort and the Island Group.

Nudity takes off
The clothing-optional lifestyle is becoming a big business, and nobody's blushing.
July 30, 2003: 2:01 PM EDT
By Gordon T. Anderson, CNN/Money Contributing Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The words "nudist colony" might conjure up notions of waifs dancing through fields like castoffs from a production of "Hair." But those who do stuff in the buff want to project a different image.

Nudism is trying to dress itself up.

"Nude recreation encompasses an incredibly wide variety of activities," says Judy Ditzler of the Naturist Society, an industry association.

There are nude cruises and motorcycle rallies, clothing-free hiking and camping. A charter airline ran a nude flight, and at least three nudist summer camps for teenagers are in operation.

Most important, there are about 260 clothing-optional resorts in North America, which are responsible for the bulk of spending in the nudity business. That's nearly twice the number of 10 years ago, according to the American Association for Nude Recreation. Many charge top dollar for spa treatments and really fluffy towels.

A relatively affluent customer base has pushed nudism in the U.S. to $400 million in annual revenues, according to the AANR. That's up from $120 million a decade ago.

"Any time somebody can drop a couple of grand on a cruise, you can assume they're at least comfortable financially," says Nancy Tiemann of Bare Necessities, a travel agent in Austin, Tex., that specializes in nudist cruise packages.

Resorts building out

In Palm Springs, Calif., Steve Payne, a former manager with Hilton and Sheraton, opened the - - - Inn in 1992 as an 11-room bed-and-breakfast. Today, it's a 92-room complex, including villas, condominiums, and a spa. Cost for a suite: $2,500 per week, including tax but not sun screen.

In Pasco County, Fla., the $45 million - - hotel and condominium recently opened. You can play tennis, volleyball, and shuffleboard -- while letting it all hang out. It is one of 6 nudist resorts in the county.

"These are mainstream properties, with common pools, landscaping, roads and the kinds of amenities you'd see at any other upscale development," says Hugh Lichter, vice president of Diversified Mortgage in Clearwater, Fla. One of them is even next to a Wal-Mart.

Lichter is not a nudist, but he has written loans both to developers and individual property owners in the Pasco County nudist community. He says prices for building lots in nudist developments in Pasco exceed the cost of similar lots nearby.

Third-of-an acre lots in nudist developments have recently sold for between $80,000 and $110,000, according to Lichter. "The same lot up the road would cost between $45,000 and $50,000," says the lender.

Mindful of such numbers, some public officials promote nude recreation as just another element of the local tourist trade.

When the - - - built a foot bridge to connect two parts of its property last year, the city of Palm Springs kicked in $185,000 to make nearby road improvements. The county also granted Payne a variance for a liquor license (a law aimed at strip clubs had been a hindrance).

In Florida, according to the AANR's Carolyn Hawkins, the Pasco County Chamber of Commerce holds regular get-togethers at nude clubs that attract as many as 300 (clothed) guests.

Naked appeals

Nudists are careful to stay on message -- "no sex please, we're naked" -- and tend to speak from the same page when promoting their avocation.

The benefit of a nude beach? No sand in your suit, three said in separate interviews.

Two sources stressed that when you're naked, class distinctions disappear. "You can't tell the difference between an attorney and a bus driver when they're not wearing clothes," one said, without even chuckling at a lawyer joke made in response.

Boosterism aside, few would dispute that nudism's a niche.

According to the Travel Industry Association, Americans spent $455 billion on travel and tourism last year. Camping alone is a $7 billion business, notes Cathy Keefe of the TIA.

Measured against that, nude recreation is barely a rounding error. Even so, cruise packager Tiemann's experience may be instructive.

Bare Necessities started out 12 years ago selling cruises on boats with a few hundred passengers. Now, the business is a mix of high-margin small groups and mass-market trips.

Last year, Carnival Cruises, which operates the ships as charters, told Tiemann that a smaller vessel would be unavailable for a planned cruise. So she had a sudden sales challenge to fill many more berths on a bigger-than-expected ship.

She marketed the trip in the nudist press and mainstream travel magazines owned by Conde Nast. Result: 2,000 naked passengers on one of the largest, ahem, "bareback" cruises ever. (Carnival's Jennifer De La Cruz confirmed the number.)

Not only did the boat sell out, says Tiemann, "there was a waiting list."

Bare Necessities is organizing an even larger cruise for next year.

Nude Resorts on a Winning Streak
A 'Flesh Look' at America's $400 Million Au Natural Vacation Business
By BUCK WOLF
July 11, 2006

There's never been a better time to skinny dip, play tennis au natural, or Jet Ski in the raw. It's "Nude Recreation Week" and America's fast-growing network of 260 clothing-optional resorts offer an ever-expanding list of outdoor activities for nudists.

Florida's growing network of nude
resorts offer tennis tournaments,
among other activities.
(American
Association of Nude Recreation)

Since 1992, the $400 million nude vacationing industry has tripled in size. There are now clothing-optional hotels and time-share condos in nearly every major tourist destination, nude cruises, and in-the-buff charter flights that won't let you fly by the seat of your pants.

"I think Americans are waking up to the peace and serenity that comes with taking off your clothing. For one thing, nobody has a pocket for a cell phone or beeper," says Carolyn Hawkins of the American Association for Nude Recreation, which boasts more than 50,000 dues-paying members.

"In a room of naked people, you don't know who's a judge, and who's a secretary. It's really leaving all those distractions that divide people behind."

Founded in 1931 as the American Sunbathing Association, the AANR once largely consisted of humble campgrounds where visitors could commune with nature in their birthday suits.

But these days, nude recreation has gone mainstream. A premiere destination like - -, near Tampa, Fla, welcomes 80,000 guests a year. A hotel and 340 luxary condo units lace the 72-acre resort, which features five tennis courts, three heated pools, a spa, two restaurants and several boutiques.

At the nearby - - Resort & Spa -- one of the newer players in Florida's burgeoning nude torism market -- guests are paying $300 a night to stay at its Mediterranean-style villas.

Internationally, these clubs are competing against the ultra luxurious Hidden Beach in Riviera Maya, Mexico, which features "Swim-up Suites." In these $400-to-$600-a-night accomodations, guests can jump from the balcony into a man-made river that snakes through the resort and feeds into a massive pool, which, of course, has bar service.

But if Hidden Beach seems like nothing more than an erotic waterpark, consider that most of the guests are more than 35 years old, and focused on premium services like beachside yoga, elegant dining and spa service.

The majority of nude resorts actually cater to families. In fact, nudism is hardly a young person's endeavor. More than 80 percent of the AANR's membership is 35 years old or older. "Older people are more likely to accept the sagging, flabby imperfections … in themselves and others," Hawkins says.

Whatever Floats Your Boat

While the cruise industry has seen a surge in business in recent years, Bare Necessities of Austin, Texas, has found a niche in booking entire vessels for those who want to experience the Caribbean (and other locales) in nothing more than deck shoes and sunscreen.

Of course, you'll need clothing to disembark at ports, and you'll need to put on something for formal dining. Over the past 15 years, Bare Necessities has booked 38 cruises on various cruise lines, serving more than 40,000 buck naked travelers.

If you'd rather fly naked, companies like Castaway Travel in Austin inaugurated a special charter service two years ago, sending 172 travelers who couldn't pack any lighter from Miami to Cancun in a Boeing 727, leaving extra space for film crews documenting the historic flight.

Palm Springs Crosses the Nude Bridge

These days, nearly every city is tripping over itself to attract tourists. And Palm Springs, Calif., hasn't ignored the value of travelers who don't even have pockets to carry their wallets.

Two years ago, the city kicked in $185,000 to help construct the world's first "Nude Bridge" -- a $500,000 140-foot pedestrian crossing with canvas screens to accommodate the fast-growing - - - -- a Mediterranean-style resort that includes a 33-room hotel, 59 one- and two-bedroom villas, 17 condos, four pools, a gym, putting green, and spa.

It seems that - - - guests were causing gridlock when they'd cross a local road to get from one side of the resort to the other. The Nude Bridge might not yet be for Palm Springs what the Golden Gate is for San Francisco, but the city did mark the event with an elaborate ribbon cutting ceremony, where city leaders talked of the hotel's rich history.

The - - - was built on land where Errol Flynn and Doris Day once owned hotels. Flynn's property is now the nude tennis court, where players wear Velcro belts around their waist, to hold extra tennis balls.

Tourist tax dollars hit peak
Nudists, athletes and other county visitors spent $68,748 in bed tax here last month.
By Chuin-Wei Yap, Times Staff Writer
Published February 29, 2008

The - - nudist resort in Lutz reported large bookings last month. The first
quarter is regarded as nudism's peak season, said Toby Caroline of - -.

Pasco collected a record amount of tourist tax dollars in January, and if you believe anecdotal suggestions, sports and naked people are part of the explanation.

The $68,748 collected in January, a bellwether month in the tourism industry, was the largest take in the bed tax since the county started collecting such data in 1991.

Some of the tax money came from nudist resorts, of which Pasco has the most in Florida.

"We had a great month in January," said Chris Berry, who handles real estate for - - Resorts. "We were definitely booked solid, three months ahead. We had another big party in the middle of the month, and that was booked up almost to capacity.

"Part of what's driving the business is the hellacious winter up north. So many of them are from Massachusetts, Michigan, Canada, and they say it's been horrendous," Berry said.

"I was told New Year's Eve was the busiest in Pasco it's ever been," said Carolyn Hawkins, spokeswoman for the American Association of Nude Recreation. New Year's Eve takings would have been reported in January.

Other resorts like Lake Como and - - also reported bumper bookings last month. The first quarter is regarded as nudism's peak season, said Toby Caroline of - -.

Sports also played a role in tourist tax collections.

The Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel hosted
the Dick's Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions,
the lacrosse national club championship, and the
USTA Grand Slam Futures tennis tournament.

[Lance Aram Rothstein | Times (2003)]

"Keep in mind we added the Dick's Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions - the lacrosse national club championship - which tallied close to 700 room nights for the county, including 136 for Saddlebrook Resorts," said Eric Keaton, who handles Pasco's tourism matters.

Saddlebrook was the host hotel for the Dick's tourney. In January, Saddlebrook and Saint Leo University also hosted the USTA Grand Slam Futures tennis tournament, Keaton said.

Pasco tourism isn't breaking step with the rest of the Sunshine State when it comes to the longer term. Florida saw the first year-to-year decline in tourists since 2001 last year.

Pasco reported a 4 percent dip in tourist revenue between 2006 and 2007, but the last three months of 2007 saw a surge while the rest of Florida staggered. And then January broke county records.

Hotels are betting on the tourism trend here. Last year, Marriott opened a Residence Inn at the Suncoast Parkway and State Road 54. And earlier this month, a new Hampton Inn & Suites opened at SR 56 and Interstate 75.

Chuin-Wei Yap can be reached at cyap@sptimes.com or (813)909-4613.

Nude Beaches: Which Country's Citizens Are Most Likely To Sunbathe Nude?

God bless the nudists. Expedia just released their very scientific list of nation's whose citizens have admitted to sunbathing nude while on beach vacations.

The travel site enlisted Harris Interactive to conduct an online survey of some 8,599 adults in 21 countries to learn more about what people do on beach vacations. (52% of respondents said they were planning a beach vacation this year.) When asked the question, 320 people copped to sunbathing nude while on beach vacations.

So which countries bared all? Germans were most likely to take it off, with 15% saying they'd tanned in the nude; they were also the most beach-loving country surveyed. Spain and India followed in the #2 spot with 8%; Sweden, Denmark, Mexico and the Netherlands came in at 6%. The United States and the U.K. came in seventh with just 2%.

Love the idea of a nude vacation but don't know where to go? Check out Las Vegas' nude expo on June 1 and 2; to get your feet wet, you can head out in your birthday suit for a barbecue and pool party while there.

Check out our slideshow of the best nude beaches in the world, below.

Correction: Sandy Bay is an "unofficial" nudist beach in South Africa. Clifton Beach is not a nudist beach, as previously stated in this slideshow.

See the original article with slideshow here.

From Expedia:

Germans are Likeliest to Sunbathe Nude

Germans displayed the most permissive attitudes towards nude sunbathing. A full 15% of German respondents indicated that they sunbathed naked. Indians and Spaniards (8%) were the second-likeliest to shed their clothing, while the French (5% clothing-free) were more aligned with Americans (2%), the British (2%) and the Japanese (1%).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Germans seem to be the most popular beachgoers: when asked if they’d spent beach days with strangers, the Germans (23%) and Brazilians (19%) were likeliest to say they had.

Additionally:

Indians (22%), Canadians (20%), Mexicans (19%), Italians (18%) and the Irish (18%) were likeliest to have participated in “beach bar games.”

31% of Singaporeans had spent beach time at the spa, versus 3% of the Japanese and 5% of the Dutch.

Indian (39%), Mexican (34%), Brazilian (30%) and Argentinean (27%) beachgoers were most likely to dance on the beach.
