Naturists mull legal action against PayPal
Updated Mon. Mar. 24 2008 2:25 PM ET
The Canadian Press
VANCOUVER -- The Federation of Canadian Naturists believes it is the victim of naked aggression.
The federation, which publishes the magazine Going Natural, says that PayPal has abruptly cancelled service after four years of processing subscription payments for the magazine.
The group says it has received e-mails from PayPal claiming the magazine is pornographic, and sells "sexually oriented goods or services involving minors" or "services for which the purpose is to facilitate meetings for sexually oriented activities."
Judy Williams, government affairs director for the federation, says the decision is "born of ignorance" because Going Natural is devoted to naturism, or nudism.
Williams says naturism is a social movement over a hundred years old and unrelated to sexual activity.
"PayPal's decision about Going Natural and its claims about the FCN are unfounded embellishments born of ignorance," Williams said in a news release issued Monday.
She says PayPal has a near monopoly on the global online payment market and is duty bound to be objective in its service.
"PayPal also has a responsibility to avoid making arbitrary and narrow judgements, as well as issuing wildly untrue and offensive statements about clients," she says.
Williams says the federation is mulling a class action lawsuit.

I don't know a lot about the Canadian court system but, If the magazine in question is anything like "N" Pay Pal has made an expensive mistake.

This is the kind of BS that can be expected from PayPal. I've used them to buy on occasion when there is no other choice. But I've heard far too many hundreds of horror stories about how they arbitrarily freeze merchant accounts and even destroy businesses by freezing assets of small business owners. That they make a simple-minded judgement about nudism/naturism based on ignorance and stupidity without the benefit of research or fact, comes as no surprise to me.

I'd say to all merchants: Go get yourself an account to accept credit cards. It isn't expensive and you don't have to deal with PP stupidity.

Randy, It costs a lot to set up a credit card acceptance whereas Paypal only charges a few $ per transaction. I accept Paypay for club membership but have to charge a couple extra $ to make up for what they charge Travelites. Hugs, Cheri
