I've never been to Lighthouse Beach but hope to go this summer sometime, likely on a weekday as that's when it will be less densely populated. Can anyone tell me anything about the beach? How do I get there from the NY Thruway? How much is admission? Anything in particular that I need to know so I will get there and not embarrass myself? lol I'm hopeful that SOMEBODY here has been there and can 'give me the goods.'
Melissa

First, I have a MSNTV box. To get the address of any page I press "menu". The last part is always the same for the forum. TOPIC_ID= followed by a number. Those of you on a regular computor should have the topic id you are on at the top of the page. You should be able to backspace the # and put in the new topic # and click GO. If not someone will correct me.

Melissa, My wife and I have visited Fire Island several times and I think it is one of my favorite beaches. My other two favorites are Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
I have to agree that going alone is not much fun. Find someone to go with you. I went to Nantucket last week alone because my wife was busy but it really wasn't the same. However, that being said, if you do go alone, Fire Island is probably one of the best place. I've never gone on a weekend but on every sunny weekday I've visited, there have literally been hundreds of nude beach goers. As was stated, go down Robert Moses Pkwy to the very end to the traffic circle. ( The tall structure at the circle is NOT the lighthouse) Go about 1/2 way around the circle and take the road to the Field 5 parking area. It cost $8 for the day to park. Go as far left after the parking attendant booths as you can and park. Find the boardwalk and start walking ( beautiful walkway in itself) When you come to the gravel road, turn right and follow the road a few hundred feet and join the first boardwalk you see on the right. Follow that boardwalk to the beach. It will be posted right in front of you 'clothing optional' area. We have found it best to stay as near the path leading to the beach as possible if you want to be in a mixed crowd of people.
What I just described is the "west" end. If you want to go to the "east" end, start walking left towards the lighthouse. Just past the lighthouse is the other nude section. We've never stayed in that section as yet but have walked past it. The couple times we went there it was sparsely populated. ( It was early in the day.) The west end is always more populated. It all depends what you like.
Enjoy - Bill

Why wait for the summer to enjoy nudism/naturism. Long Island Travasuns has swims in Wantaugh all winter long. Teva.

I live about 10 minutes from Lighthouse beach and visit very frequently during the summer. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly and the beach is beautiful. I am hoping to get my new girlfriend comfortable enough to join me this year. Melissa, if you need someone sorta familiar to go with, just let me know. I would be happy to. As far as the Travasuns swims, they are fun. I hope to be going to the one in march.

Thanks for the directions - three questions - first, could you back up a bit for those of us outside of the area and explain how to get to Robert Moses parkway.
Second, I've heard that there are several nude beaches in that area - is this the best one?
Finally, any good local places to stay for the night? We'd love to find someplace that allows nudity?

1.) Robert Moses causeway is exit 40 off the Southern St. Pkwy.
2.) Lighthouse beach is the easiest beach to get to...I believe there are other parts of Fire island where nudity is tolerated, but they are not easily accessable by car as far as I know.
3.) Don't know of anyplace to stay right in that area...there are some hotels within a half-hour drive or so on Long Island, but maybe some of the local residents are better informed on this than I am.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth regarding Lighthouse Beach.
I had business in Islandia NY a few weeks ago so afterward, we went over to Lighthouse Beach. It was very chilly and windy so of course we did not partake but we did park in field 5 and walk over to the beach. I was curious about the walk since my wife cannot walk real far. It really is a nice walk over the boardwalk then maybe 50 yards of road, then another short boardwalk to the beach. Some brave sole actually had their windscreen set up and was populating it, but they were back against the dunes. We could not tell if they were clothed or not. The sun was bright and they were shielded from the wind, it might have been ok (it was about 58 degrees). I was surprised to find no signs regarding nudity or whatever. Perhaps they were “down” for the winter? The date was April 23. It really is a beautiful beach. I noticed that the parking lot was NY state property and I wondered how they could have a CO area, but then I noticed that at the end of the first walkway, it turns into Federal land which does allow nudity. I also wanted to point out that when you park in field 5, you are very close to the textile beach – perhaps a three wood. So it seems to me it would be closer to go to the textile beach then walk on the beach to the CO area. Walking on the sand might be more difficult for some folks. When I walked to the textile beach, I was shocked to see a guy coming out of the beach area – wet and still in a swimsuit. He did not seem to be a surfer – I had my coat on and it was buttoned up. Made me feel like a real wimp. On the way to the beach, I noticed no places to stay that were anywhere close to the parks. We live closer to Gunnison so we will continue to go there but Lighthouse certainly is a lovely area. We have been to Gunnison, Playalinda, Apollo and Haulover. Each has its own special appeal. We may try Lighthouse this summer just to experience it too.
