Hi!
This is my first post. I'm, unfortunately, more of a wannabe naturist than one with enough opportunities to participate.
BUT we used to live in Jersey, and I did manage to get out to the Hook a couple times.
So, when I saw this article pop up on my Google sidebar:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/30/nyregion/30naked.html
I figured it would be great to post it here, if no one else had done so yet.
It looks like pretty even coverage to me, which is great for SH!
OK, my job keeps me really busy, even if I do work from home...back to work (yes, it is 1:30 am).

It's a shame that there wasn't better coverage about what nudism really is and that actual nudists weren't there to give them some information. Cheri

I thought the article was very balanced and suspect it is indeed a great opportunity to write a letter to the editor -- thanking the Times and Blumenthal for a cheerful upbeat article, noting that Sandy Hook's Gunnison Beach is a nice place for people to shed city cares and freely enjoy the sun and sea, maybe mentioning that naturism is all about accepting and respecting each other whether clothed or not, and inviting everybody to take advantage of Nude Recreation Week to take the plunge, forego the last bits of polyester, give their skin chance to breathe, and allow their inner-kid to rediscover the joys swimming and relaxing naturally.

Seems to me, Mr. Blumenthal was respectful and even-handed in his writing. He specifically mentions three interviews with fully nude individuals: the fisherman, the vet nurse, and the fellow in his beach chair. They gave rather candid (if not eloquent) replies. The entire tone of the article was comparable to others I have seen about vacation destinations. I agree with Agde; the Times should get a handful of letters from nudists praising the article and pointing out the benefits of a naturist setting so close to a major population center. Just hope the influx of tourists won't ruin the place, eh?
