I can only say what I saw and what I was specifically told by the office people when I checked into Club Orient That nudity beyond the Club Orient property was now against the law and I would be cited by the Gendarmes.

Yes, this threat by the Gendarmes has been ongoing for several years now. Even our last visit back in 2009, the office staff was telling guests that walking nude the entire stretch of Orient Beach could get them a citation. I've read posts over on TTOL (traveltalkonline) that some of the guests were actually walking naked and carrying Euros and sarongs. They'd cover if told to by the Gendarmes and pay their fine on the spot!
Other posts have nudes walking the beach very early and back on Club O property by 8 am. In 2009, we were told by those most familiar with the routines of the Gendarme to be back by 9:30 am but we still saw some topless visitors on our walks with sarongs on.
The entire beach has changed since our first visit and from what our friends have said when they were visiting in the late 90's. I'm sure we'll see lots of changes when we visit again next year. No matter, we don't like putting anything on while at Club O so we'll forego the beach walk and just stay nude on the property. If we need exercise, we'll start up a game of volleyball!
Loves being naked. Plays well with others!

FireProf, it sounds like a plan. I don't need to rest the waters - Club O is good enough for me.

That's pretty much what I was told last year. Every morning I got up early to go for a jog on Orient Beach - all the way up and down the beach - and then I would toss my shorts to stretch and swim nude on the Club O side.
I encountered very few "naked walkers" on Orient Beach. Mostly men; except for a couple of nude couples, the women often opted for a T-shirt, bikini bottom or sarong.
Towards the end of my stay I asked one of the Club O. employees what the "rules" were about being nude outside of Club O. He told me that nudity on Orient Beach was tolerated until the cruise ships started coming in - around 8 am. My GF and I did go for a late night naked walk and skinny-dip on Orient Beach (we stayed on the other side.) But now that I know what the "rules" are, I'll do my early morning jog nude when I go back in March - as long as I can get up around 7 am!

There's a sign just below Pedro's on the beach that states that Nudity is not permitted beyond this point. Last year DW went topless on the rest of the beach and so did many others. Nobody even batted an eye. I can't see that changing. After all isn't that the French way? On st Patty's day we were going to walk the beach and DW realized how busy the beach was and felt a cover up would be in order. She doesn't like drawing attention to herself. Our car was parked at Pedro's so rather than go back to our umbrellla, we stopped at the car and got an Over Sized Green Bow Tie.. DW isn't very big. (115lbs soaking wet.) She put that over her breasts and we proceeded to walk down to the end of the beach. We were amazed at how much attention this drew to her. Many many smiles, comments and thumbs up. She was also approached by several people wanting pictures taken with her. Boy did that ever backfire. LOL

As I'm sure you know, St. Martin just got hit very hard by Hurricane Irma, and may get further damage in a few days from Hurricane Jose. Club Orient posted this on Facebook:
"As Category 5 Hurricane Irma closes in on St. Martin, our dedicated maintenance staff has been working tirelessly since sunup to help prepare for the storm and protect the resort we all love! All boats have been brought in, palm trees are trimmed, coconuts removed, and all vulnerable areas have been boarded up, tied down and/or sandbagged. St. Martin is cutting off utilities this afternoon and a mandatory curfew will go into effect. Keep those thoughts and prayers coming - they are much needed and appreciated! We will keep you updated as much as possible in the coming hours and days."
We had vague plans to visit Club O next Spring, but wondered if it made sense to go after such a devastating hurricane season. Upon reflection, though, we are determined to go, assuming the resort is open. Like most of the islands of the Caribbean, St. Martin's economy is heavily dependent on tourism, and places like Club O are going to need our support.
Lord knows we have plenty of catastrophic events going on in the US. My hometown of Houston is flooded, and my current state of Oregon is on fire. Obviously we need to support relief efforts here. But the US has resources far beyond what a small island can possibly muster. If you're considering a visit to St. Martin in the next year or so, I encourage you to go for it. The island may be a bit tattered but the beach and the ocean will still be there and the Saint-Martinois could surely use the tourist dollars.

Stories and photos continue to come in and the devastation is beyond anything we could imagine. Having visited the island many, many times, seeing some of those buildings, that we thought could withstand a hurricane, completely destroyed, our thoughts and prayers go out to those that live in typical St. Martin dwellings. We can only hope that the death toll is minimal. Some of the storm video is difficult to watch.
We will return to St. Martin in the near future and hope our tourist dollars will help them with the rebuild and to carry on with their lives as best as they can after such a horrible experience. Hoping they are spared by the next hurricane brewing.

We're suppose to have dinner next week with cousin and his wife to discuss a trip to Club O next spring. Looks like that's going to be put on hold for awhile.

I'm on several SXM facebook pages, and I have not heard or seen anything on Club O. I did see a aerial view of Bikini Beach/La Hoste area. Bikini Beach is completely gone.

Here's some very sad and bad news from Club O owners that got this message from others that were on the island during the storm.
Dear Shareholders,
It's ugly!
Steve and Bert just returned to GCBC from a visit to Club Orient. Their findings include the following:
All wood units are gone. Presumably the slabs are left, but the buildings are gone.
Gatehouse is gone. In its place is a huge pile of debris that landed there from the winds.
Pedro concrete wall ? gone
Concrete buildings survived. Roofs gone or damaged.
Except for the waterfront chalets 46-52 ? They are gone. No sign of where they went.
The new beach goes from the water's edge back to where the studios used to be. It's about 200 feet.
Hurricane shutters on units left are gone as well as the contents of all the houses ? presumably sucked out by the wind ? no sign of where the furniture, cabinets, appliances, etc., went.
The units' contents have been stripped by the hurricane.
The villa is standing ? no further detail.
Papagayo is standing but may not be sound structurally. All the contents are gone.
The utility plant is covered with debris so Bert and Steve could not get a close look at the generators, switch panel, etc. It looks like there was about 5' of water in that area, which means salvaging the electric plant is in doubt.
The reception building is still standing. The front desk and other furnishings are gone.
The tennis courts are gone.
Steve and Bert drove through Orient Village where most of the buildings are standing but the contents of the first floors that they could see into are gone.
Looters beat Steve and Bert to the resort. They were clearing out the Boutique. We let them take the contents because presumably they need the stuff worse than we do!
I will continue to keep you updated as new information comes in. Steve took about 100 pictures but has no way to transmit them until Internet service is restored.
According to Fr?d?ric Lecomte, our Paris attorney, the French media are reporting that 95% of the island is destroyed.
We have a huge job in front of us. We will need a lot of out-of-the-box thinking to reinvent Club Orient ? better than ever.
Pictures of the damage throughout the island are beginning to be posted. Nothing from Club O yet.

My God. It's even worse than I thought. It's pretty clear that Club O will not re-open any time soon, certainly not by next Spring. It would such a catastrophe if we lost Club O!

I feared that the damage would be that extreme. Guess I'll put Club O on the list for late 2018 or 2019.

Such horrible news. Club O has been hit by a hurricane before and rebuilt, but this sounds much worse. I agree with Doc that we should give them our support, unfortunately it may be quite a while before the infrastructure is back allowing us to do that.

My fiancée and I have wedding plans for next year in St Martin. We are anxiously awaiting news to see if it's still a possibility.
I have friends who live there. This sucks so bad...:/
