In 1995, Robert Putnam published a now-famous essay entitled Bowling Alone. You can read the original essay here
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/DETOC/assoc/bowling.html. This has evolved into a larger activity, www.bowlingalone.com.
The central idea of the essay is that civic engagement--whether having neighbors over to dinner, or being active in local politics, or participating in community activities, church groups, fraternal organizations and so on --has declined so much that that it has affected the fabric and quality of our lives.
Social nudism might be seen as a form of civic engagement--to be with like-minded others to enjoy their company, make new acquaintances, discuss the issues of the day while sharing leisure time.
So the questions to nudist colleagues and friends:
1. How meaningful is the social aspect of social nudity to you? Why is it important that you "share being bare" with others?
2. Do you participate in other kinds of social organizations? And at what levels of participation?

This is a very interesting topic, Pilot, and I have to agree with the basic premise ... I too believe that the social quality of life, at least in the US, has noticeably declined just within my lifetime (I'm 43). I think there are probably lots of reasons for it ... the hustle and bustle of our urban lives, television, and of course the internet. How ironic to be discussing it here ...
Regarding your questions ...
1. My "social nudity" activities have been minimal, so I don't really qualify to answer this very well. The times that I have enjoyed hot springs and so forth with friends, it seemed that being nude was just an incidental aspect.
2. My answer to this is a very definite "yes". I am lucky enough to be retired from a "normal" job, but that also means I don't have the social interaction that most people get from their work. Instead, I work with various causes that not only foster the things I believe in, but as a secondary effect gives me a lot of the "people interaction" that I would otherwise miss. Of course, having two children in college and trying to keep up with them and their friends, and the incredible amount of energy they have, keeps me on my toes too.

Answers
Question 1. It has not been important to me in my wish to be nude. I just enjoy being nude and am always at home, indoors and out. However I have found that I do enjoy being nude with others and have been searching out more venues to experiance being nude with others. I am finding that other nudists are very friendly and I have been enjoying meeting them.
Question 2. Interesting question. I have never been very social. Before my wife passed away we seldom did social activities except with family. Now that I am alone I have had offers for social interactions but at this point I seem to only be interested in nudist activities.
