There seems to be an ever increasing number of topics in the 'root' area of this board, meaning that you have to scroll for ages and it's easy to miss topics that you are interested in, especially as the unread markers are on the erratic side.
Couldn't the topics be structured into child sections?

Good suggestion. You're right, it does change the footprint of the index page. On this three level format, this would allow the top level being the country, the middle the forums, and the third the actual post threads.
This means we can have separate discussions for various beaches in France for example.
For the USA listings, this would allow the top being USA, the middle the State, and leaving the third level for separate discussion threads. So Florida for instance will have an unsorted topic list, which will include random topic threads about each beach, resort location, or social club discussed, all being common to Florida.
That's the trade-off for stretching the index page, that we have better ordered lower levels.
The other possibility was to have the top level as Continent, middle Country, and that means each country including the USA would have everything in a random spaghetti on the third level.
Of course, on the Active Topics page you'll stop noticing these once they are all set up.
