Why do nudist resorts change their format to 'lifestyle' resorts?

In Pasco County this week, we witnessed the second time in just over a year that a major nudist resort withdrew from the American Association for Nude Recreation over the resort's advertising practices designed to draw a non-nudist clientele.

What is happening here?

First of all, these resorts are in the business to make money. In some cases, the resorts have been owned and managed by non-nudists. These dedicated businessmen are not constrained by sentimental notions of propriety or modesty. They have little stake in the health of the nudist industry, nor faith that organizations such as AANR can help to improve their bottom line. Once put in control of a major vacation destination, they are free to follow the money wherever it might take them.

Putting oneself in the shoes of such a businessman, one can see the dilemma they must face.

On the one hand, to stay within the traditional bounds of a nudist resort business model guarantees the support of powerful organizations such as AANR, even though that support may amount to only one link on the AANR website. A nudist resort can enjoy the patronage of nudist families, which in this decade are especially suffering from a slower economy and less vacation money to spend.

Remaining a traditional nudist resort puts one in the position of having to compete with others that allow paying nudists to attend but sex it up a bit to attract a younger crowd. If not carefully managed, this can become a transition state while morphing into what is commonly referred to as a "lifestyle resort" business model. Please note: the term lifestyle is a code word currently used to refer to the swinger lifestyle, or the swapping of sex partners. This is why traditional nudists sometimes protest whenever this term is used in connection with nudism. Other code words are play, party and like-minded.

On the other hand, the temptation to follow a swinger lifestyle business model is considerable for one not encumbered with nudist values. Once the door is open for lifestyle groups, management hears ever more heavenly numbers quoted by leaders of these lifestyle groups, claiming millions of members and tens of millions of dollars in quick profits. All that is necessary is to perpetuate the perception that the resort still deserves the exemptions it had always enjoyed as a nudist resort. There is danger here, as a sexually oriented business requires a different type of business license. But the heavenly numbers are a siren song, and they sing ever so sweetly.

In light of these factors, it is not hard to understand why the dancing pole is installed, strip contests and porn star appearances are scheduled, the social requirements of swinger lifestyle groups are catered to, and the security is not increased when complaints are made about behavior of the quests.

But the blame doesn't fall exclusively on the resorts.

AANR, for instance, has to realize that whenever they threaten an investigation and possible disciplinary action, the businessman must then weigh their net worth. What is that net worth to a resort manager? As mentioned earlier, the entire benefit may amount to only one link and phone number on the AANR website, or passing mention in the 50's style AANR Bulletin newspaper. Membership claims are hardly heavenly, at less than 50,000.

There is apparently little attention on AANR's part to providing effective marketing for the resorts they represent. Attention to detail and quality control is lacking. For instance, the club listings at AANR currently include at least one defunct and controversial Central Florida club declared by the courts to be bankrupt, under foreclosure and non-existent as of October 30, 2008. Yet this corporation still appears on the list of valid AANR clubs.

And that's not all. The AANR-Florida website, as we write these words, has NO listings or links at all for any nudist clubs or resorts in Florida, due to a serious mistake by the webmaster. (We sent an email.)

Where are the brochure-like website promotions AANR could provide, but which smaller clubs may not be able to afford? This is what would be needed in a faltering economy. The health of AANR depends on the health of the resorts which grow the membership base.

When you think about it, what resort manager would support an organization that tries to put you in prison for not joining them? We see the stick but where is the carrot?

What is needed is a greater understanding of what it means to visit a nudist resort. The idea that open sex is not allowed is hardly a starter for newspaper articles. The nudist industry needs to crank up the publicity machine for the positive message of social family nudism, to help drown out the negative message of the failures. The World Record Skinny Dip, while creative, didn't focus on the resorts as much as on the event. We need more awareness of the resorts.

Our forum here at Nudist-Resorts.Org has provided a rich platform of grassroots support for the establishments which hold to the nudist ethic. This support is firmly withdrawn when a nudist resort becomes a lifestyle resort with all the hallmarks of that definition.

The best option we all have is to actively support our favorite nudist resorts. Money talks, and if nudists don't spend it, we deserve what we get.
