When, exactly, does a non-naturist become a naturist?
Following from a number of recent debates about "true naturists", "hugging naturists" and "platonic naturists". I've been considering what makes the difference between naturists and others, and at what stage does a person stop being a "textile" and become a naturist?
Is it the first public nude experience? On joining a recognised Club? Is it going topless at a beach? Or something more intrinsic?
... And once you've come a Naturist can you ever go back?

Some people are closet nudists, just enjoy being nude at home, never go nude in public, but they are still nudists. Some people will go nude in public just to be seen, or to see other people nude. They are exhibitionists or voyeurs and not really nudists. Nudism/naturism is the feeling of being free and enjoying your environment without the hassels of clothes. You accept other people as they are, and you enjoy socializing with people of like mind. I wouldn't call someone who has skinny dipped once a nudist, or occasionally walks from the bedroom to the bathroom nude, a nudist. Nudism/naturism is also a frame of mind.
I have never known anyone that was a nudist to quit being a nudist. I am sure it could happen. People could have a bad experience, or just decide on a new approach to life.

Kimberly,
I would probably argue that a nudist wouldn't "go-back" but a person that went nude once (and had a bad experience) could. Suggesting that may be the difference?

I have been acquainted with people who were nudists and gave up the lifestyle for textiles due to marriage to a person who wouldn't even consider it as well as they just didn't feel it met what they actually were...or thought they were. I've been acquainted with a man whose children were not allowed to participate because of his ex-wife; he found it easier to give up the lifestyle than not see his kids.
Even if clothed, we are nudists. Nudism/naturism is a state of mind.
We are all nudists, some more so than others; we all shower or bathe without clothing. True nudists are those of us who prefer to be w/o clothes beyond just bathing.

When does one become a nudist/naturist depends on the individual. One can decide on the first visit to a club or beach to continue visiting on a regular basis, another may decide not right now, maybe later for whatever reasons. Being nude at home only or going topless at a beach in my opinion is not enough. Attitude, as Kimberly described, is also a factor. In short, the dividing line is fuzzy.

I will jump in here and put in our two cents. We talked about this and agree with Kimberly that even though someone only goes nude at home can still consider themselves a nudist.
We can't agree that one trip to a resort or a nude beach would make you a nudist. Nudism is a state of mind. It's the feeling most of us have when we are nude as opposed to being clothed at work or textile social functions. It is usually a calming destressing effect that being nude has to those of us that given the choice would be nude always.
We were home nudists. We came in the door and immediately disrobed. Stayed nude until we left or had visitors. We ventured into the social aspect of nudism only 4 years ago. We both wish we had started that sooner. But the fact remained that we were much happier, less stressed and felt better when we were nude.
My wife now laughs at herself because she fought this feeling for quite along time before giving in and now can't wait to get home and take off her clothes. She still will slip on a shirt and a pair of socks now and then but is much more at ease and relaxed when nude.
All in all it is difficult to define for someone else if they are a nudist or not. We agree that, that is a personal decision one makes on their own, but occasional skinny dipping and a trip or two to the nude beach a year, I don't think qualifies as a nudist.

I will have to agree with FireProf, being a nudist is a state of mind. You can be a nudist and be nude even when in textile, only in your head!

Yesterday I met in our bathhouse one strange lady. She was perfectly the same as all of we are, nake, but she said nope, I never am going tan and I hate the Sun - accordingly I am no naturist. I tried to talk that it shows she may be is nudist soul instead, and she explained she never is nude nowhere except the bath... "for the health", so she is no nudist too.
Really strange lady, no nudist, no naturist, but so much like a naturist bathhouse...

I am a nudist & also don't like to sit out in the sun. She is not so strange except in her thoughts as to what a nudist/naturist is. IMHO, I feel everyone is a nudist, just some more so than others. It's what you think you are that counts.

Interesting Cheri, in an another thread you stated that a streaker wasn't a nudist, but above you state that everybody is... Is that a contradiction?
I don't think many people would except that everybody is a nudist. Being nude in the bath doesn't necessarily mean you subscribe to a particular lifestyle. People take their clothes off in the bath out of necessity, while nudists take their clothes off at beaches (etc) for pleasure.

To throw in my nickel's worth, I think we're all made to be nudists. We were born without clothes and as young children desired to be without clothes. How many parents have chased after their nude children and forced them into clothes? Kids are natural nudists. But our environment eventually trains us to believe that being nude is naughty, sinful, wrong, immoral, immodest, and everything else bad. So we cover up. If we can get past our society's conditioning we're all nudists. However, most people (it seems) never really question the teachings of society and blindly continue to believe what they were taught. Hence, they are never nude and never act on their internal nature to be nude. So, to put it succinctly, we all have the potential to be nudists but, due to societal conditioning, few of us act on it.

Melissa,
Very good point. I guess that's probably the difference, nudists choose to challenge society and their attitudes towards clothing.
Why then do so few people challenges these attitudes?

I can only speak for myself on why people don't challenge the attitudes. For me, it never even occured to me that nudism wasn't wrong. I was sexually abused and therefore learned at a very young age that nudity meant pain and shame. It took a long time to get past this. Beyond this, anytime we see nudity it has to do with sex. For those of us with values (that's me), nudism would therefore be considered a big amoral orgy. Though this is far from the truth of nudism, I think this is the perception that many people had.

I applaud you for giving it ago. It must have been tough for you to not only cover societies misconceptions, but also your own feelings to give naturism a try. I think we need more people like yourself to step forward to help develop naturism, worldwide.

I'm working on it, boy am I working on it. Interestingly, I had 2 friends stop by for dinner tonight. Both have fought me vehemently about nudism, saying it's immoral and all that. Well, things have changed. My friend Laura actually HELPED me in talking to my friend Keith. It seems that Laura was curious about my nudist lifestyle and decided to be a home nudist! LOL Who would have thunk it? She told me tonight that she loves being nude at home when she can (she lives with her parents, so she has to be dressed a lot) and she's even begun sleeping in just underwear. I applauded her efforts. Both friends are still completely against me being socially nude, but I'm thrilled that Laura is trying out nudism for herself... maybe I CAN make a difference. I'm certainly trying!
