Have you noticed that when you meet nudists face to face that they are very private about their occupations or their work? Is this a secret? I am not asking where they work but I am curious about what they do, maybe because I like to imagine them at a job. Same is true for art models. I asked a girl I was drawing what she did for a living and she would not tell me. Why not? BTW, figure drawing would be a very pleasant event at nudist resorts! Do you know of any websites or print magazines that mention this? Am I asking too much?

For me, personally, I never ask someone what they do for a living, and I don't really care when someone asks me either. I figure if they want me to know, they will tell me, and vice versa. It seems to me that many people define a person by their job. But I can't stand it when I meet someone new and one of the first things they want to know is what I do for a living.
There is actually a topic on this subject on another nudist site I frequent. One of the posters said that he works with small children and was afraid of people finding out that he is a nudist because they may label his behavior as deviant, which could affect his job.

It usually comes up from either side but it's later in the conversation and the door's usually opened from one side or the other. We usually ask if they've been "there" before, are they regular visitors, where else they've gone, what types of places they like, if they are a family of nudists or just a couple ... or if they are nudists or just a couple that likes to be nude on vacations and getaways.
Some people get upset if you refer to them as " nudists." I don't know why people get so riled over the word or the "label" of being a nudist. All they have to say is ... "I don't consider myself one, I just like to be naked when I can." But some of them go into a fit about not wanting to be called a "nudist."
I remember on couple in the hot tub of a resort that was quiet and not engaging in the conversation. I asked all the above questions and they were willing to answer without hesitation until I asked ... "what do you do for a living?" They both looked at me and then each other and I could see the hesitation. I said ... "I'm a Fire Captain with ... and my wife is an English Professor at ... "
Well the flood gates opened and they were more than willing to then talk about what they did. He was a Lt. with a large city police dept and she was also employed by the police dept as a high ranking officer's executive assistant. I think they were relieved that they could say that to someone and knew I wasn't going to go out on the street and scream it to the world. I understood their hesitation and so did many of us in the hot tub.
After they told us, many of the others in the pool were eager to then speak up about what they did. This conversation actually opened up many more topics of conversation, conversations of misconceptions and misunderstandings, which then led into our families reaction and so forth ... so it was a good conversation starter. By the way ... the policeman and his wife ... hung with us the two days we were there. He said that he felt he could talk with me about our jobs and nudism because I could understand their position. For them ... it was a good thing someone asked "what do you do for a living."

And also, doing a little networking can come in handy.
One individual at a get-together came out as an I.T professional; and was able to help our host with her computer problems. Another individual told us he was a lawyer; and was more than willing to give us some free legal advice when asked. A "hot tub conversation" with a nudist lady revealed the fact that she worked at the airport. She gave my wife some insight about getting a job there. My wife followed the insight and got a job at the airport.
As long as the topic of professions doesn't become intrusive...or rude, I think it can be a tool for cementing relationships - nudist helping one another.

I just want to clarify...it's not that I don't like being asked what I do, but I hate when it's one of the first things that is asked. Get to know the person first IMO.

I agree ... I would rather get to know a little about someone first. I'd not want the conversation to go something like this:
Hi, I'm ... and this is my wife ...
Hello, we are ... and ..., what do you do for a living?
Ahhhhhhh ...
Lots of times we seque into "that" when we get to the part in the conversation where we ask, "here on vacation?, long weekend?" Usually someone will answer ... either way and that can lead you into a conversation on what you all do for a living.
I got what you were saying Willy ... I guess I should have quoted the OP when I posted.

i think when your a member of a club for awhile everyone knows your occupation, i was in law enforcement for 25 years and i'm sure most every member knew and i knew most of their occupations. i'm not sure if it was "were all family thing" or gossip and yes everyone gossips lol. i looked at it as not doing anything wrong - it isn't illegal in a private setting like a nudist camp so if my employer had found out and made it a problem they would have to show me where i violated a rule or law. and i guess the other co-workers would have had a problem too.

one time when the olympics came to atlanta i was up at the nudist camp with several other friends around the pool when the owner came up and said the news media was coming shortly for a tour and interview of the camp because the olympics went back to greece and the first olympics being in the nude and they were looking for news that day i guess. well he asked if we were all ok with that and turned to me i said sure heck i was wearing a hat & sunglasses ! and he wanted a group to make it look like a nudist camp after all.

If they ask me. I tell them that I'm retired. I enjoy every bit of not working.

Also retired. My first comment I jokingly tell them my job is pension collector. When they asked what that is I tell them I'm retired and collect my pension. I have no problem though with none asking what I did before retirement or what I do now as a part time job for something do. Why be a snob if you want friendly conversation.

to SailAwayBob, you'll probably come out of retirement just to arrest me for my silly posts here on this forum!!

If you read people's profiles a lot say they want casual acquaintances or friendship. So a good ice breaker for conversation outside of the weather is what do you do for a living. I don't take it so personal. I enjoy talking about other things in life other than just being nude. Maybe I might have phrased it wrong. I apologize.

Ya know ... I get what Willy is saying. My wife is a "private" person. She can be thought of as "snobbish" at first but once you get to know her and she gets to know you, she is more open and lots of fun ... but she's still a very private person, even after she knows you. So for her ... even if we've been talking to people at a club or resort for a few hours, she may or may not devulge "exactly" what she does. Most times, if pressed, she'll state that she is in education. My wife really isn't a snob but like Willy, there are questions she just prefer not to be asked. And some people may think that as snobbish but in fact ... those being asked the question are just private people.

Like I said ...I apologize on my wording but not my opinion. Hope this thread doesn't become a shooting match of opinions. Enough said on my part.

No need to apologize Daretobare, you cleared it up.
Like your wife FireProf, I just state "I work in law enforcement" until I get to know someone better, then I will tell them what I do. But again, I don't mind the question coming up, but I'd rather it came up later on, not in the first few moments of a conversation.
