Red Sand Beach on the eastern shore of Maui is by far the most beautiful beach we have ever been to. It is very tough to find but well worth it. It is near the town of Hana.

Red Sands Beach is about a two hour drive from the airport in Kahului, Maui, on a twisty, narrow highway,through dense rain forest with hundreds of waterfalls. Once you get to Hana on the far Windward, or western tip of the island, you'll be surprised by the rewards brought by the hike to Red Sands Beach. A long time ago part of the mountain collapsed forming a sort of crater. This crater has been worn down over the eons to form a small protected bay with great red sand. The waves crash over the beautiful sculpted rocks and into the bay creating a safe place to swim and sun. Snorkeling is fair, but stay in the bay. Very much worth the trip, and quite a change from Little Beach on the other side of the island. A normal crowd here is 10-20 people and always friendly. While Little Beach is much easier to get to, every nude sunbather should make an effort to see Red Sands at least once if they get to Maui.

You are welcome. We love that beach! However, I did make a mistake. We always call it the Windward side in Hawaii because that's how we give directions. But it's actually on the eastern tip, not the west. Little Beach is west.
