NATURIST ACTION COMMITTEE
ADVISORY
**********************************************************************

**********************************************************************

DATE: February 5, 2004
SUBJECT: Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia-CANADA
TO: Naturists in the Pacific Northwest and Canada

Dear Naturist,

The Naturist Action Committee has identified an important milestone in the evolution of the relationship between the University of British Columbia (UBC), neighbor to Wreck Beach within Pacific Spirit Regional Park (PSRP), stewarded by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), and the general public.

BACKGROUND

Since 1987, the GVRD have had jurisdiction over the cliffs and foreshore along the 8 km of Wreck Beach between Booming Ground Creek to the southwest and Acadia to the northeast. Wreck Beach is the foreshore portion of Pacific Spirit Regional Park. This strand of 8 km accounts for a total of 57% of total park usage in a park that includes over 1500 acres!

ATTEND THE PUBLIC PLANNING WORKSHOP

This "important milestone" is an urgent public planning workshop symposium to be held February 7, 2004, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. in Room 200, the University's Student Union Building, 6138 Student Union Boulevard on the UBC campus.

The Naturist Action Committee urges you to attend this important workshop.

We want both the GVRD and UBC to realize that naturists who value Wreck Beach are united in their concerns for the beach, foreshore, cliffs and adjacent uplands and how development by UBC on those adjacent lands might impact the environmentally sensitive estuarine lands along Wreck Beach, directly, or indirectly. The stated purpose of this planning workshop symposium is "to provide an opportunity the UBC community and neighbors to discuss ways to address concerns regarding the implementation of the Official Community Plan for UBC."

WHY IS GIVING UP MOST OF A SATURDAY SO IMPORTANT?

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) has fought since January 25, 1977, to prevent Wreck Beach from being destroyed by development that UBC has fought equally hard to implement. Since those early years, WBPS have lobbied for the public to have a say before, not after the fact.

From the development of the UBC Master Plan to the development of the Official Community Plan, to the crafting of the area neighborhood plans (APC's), the Wreck Beach Preservation Society, led by NAC Board Member (and Federation of Canadian Naturists' Government Affairs Officer) Judy Williams, have pushed for representation of bodies that will help shape the future of Wreck Beach.

By far the largest and most significant of the various Neighborhood Plans is the South Campus Neighborhood Plan. Both the Wreck Beach Preservation Society and the Pacific Spirit Park Society have been excluded from the South Campus Neighborhood Area Planning Committee, despite making repeated requests and lobbying to be included as provided for in the Memorandum of Understanding between UBC and the GVRD.

Usually the NAC will include instructions for emails, phone calls, letters, etc., and whether or not it matters if you're out of area. Look carefully in the NAC Alerts for those tips.

AANR only sometimes encourages public participation. They issue instructions for the public on occasion as need arises. Other times, strangely, they'll instruct you to do nothing.

according to the co journal, the workshop is to help setle the dispute between an old plaintiff whose property abuts the beach.

however, the friends of wreck beach have been left off the steering committee,; ironically, it was the attorneys for the friends of wreck beach which argued successfully in the original suit.

wreck beachis a jewel of the clothing optional movement. all those close should give support in any way they can to preserve this.
