Regarded as one of the few quality clothing optional destinations in the US, Terra Cotta Inn in Palm Springs sold last Thursday and will be converted to a textile accommodation on December 1st. This is according to a post about on the Facebook page of Tom Mulhall on Saturday.

It is unfortunate to lose yet another nudist venue...and one of the most visible and quality places we have had! I don't know the reason for the sale, but there may be many. It could be as simple as being tired from operating a highly customer service oriented business for 20 years or possibly some lack of support from the nudist community...I don't know. What I DO know is that if we nudists DON'T support the nudist venues we have, there will be none for us to enjoy.

Thanks to Tom for leading the way in operating a quality nudist business...a business ethic we modeled our business after. We wish he and Mary Clare all the best in the future.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Although there is nothing about this on the TCI website yet, here is the text of Tom's FB post:.

"Mary Clare and I have big news. As of 5pm Thursday Nov 12th, we are no longer the owners of The Terra Cotta Inn. It has been sold. The new owners names are Gary and Kathy. They are very nice people.
Mary Clare and I will be working here until Nov 29th, so feel free to stop on by to say hello or we still have some rooms available. Mary Clare will be cooking her famous Thanksgiving dinner for everyone.
I will be working with the new owners for at least 1-3 months helping out the transition. Patty will still be their manager.
December is historically a slow month in the travel industry, so they will start some upgrade projects in Dec.
When they are done with the upgrades, Terra Cotta Inn will become a textile resort.
Feel free calling us at 1-800-786-6938. We will be contacting all our guests that already have reservations. It will take time though as each call is taking 5-15 minutes.
Thank you everyone for being our friends. We love you all.
Tom and Mary Clare

And MrsAZLagoon is right about the need to support the dwindling number of clothing-optional venues in the US. Use 'em or lose 'em.

Damn, just what the world needs, another textile resort, because there are so few to choose from.

It would have been nice it Tom had laid out his reasons for the sale, but I guess it is none of our business. From what I understood, TI was a very successful business. Too bad it couldn't have been sold to a nudist buyer. What a shame, my wife and I had planned to visit soon.

This is Tom's response to questions about the sale of Terra Cotta, on TTOL

Thanks for the nice post Andy. This is Tom Mulhall. Mary Clare and I were the owners of The Terra Cotta Inn. If any one wants to talk to us, you can call 1-760-322-6059 and get the correct answera. Ask for Tom.
Terra Cotta Inn was a fun business. But, it is still a business. We were not married to it. It was not our life (even though we worked 70-80hr weeks).
We wanted to enjoy life before it was too late. I think we proved that nudists and can open a nudist resort. Be very successful like textile businesses, earn a fun livelihood, and then sell it (at a profit) when you are ready to retire. We owned TCI 21 years.
We've had sales contracts from 4 other nudist couples. 2 of them chickened out literally days before closing. The other 2 never could put together partnerships for financing.
The first contract to sell TCI was 10 years ago. We could never say we were close to selling as we would have had people make mistakes and say we were sold 10 years ago. That's the nature of rumors. So we told no one until the deal closed and we were never 100% sure.
TCI is a historic property. It was built by Albert Frey who is a very famous mid-century modernism architect. The couple who bought our resort are an architect and Wall Street Asset Manager. They intend to market to people that like historic properties. They are very nice people.
They will go back to the original name of our resort, The Monkey Tree. So if you know textiles, you can mention The Monkey Tree to stay at.
Sadly they like bathing suits better than birthday suits.

Now on a positive note, the new owners are smart (besides nice) and they have talked with our guests, listened to me and Patty. They have decided for 4 weeks in July, from July 5th to 31st, it will be TCI reunion month and WILL BE NUDIST then. Mary Clare and I will be guest hosts. We are already about 60% booked for those 4 weeks already. For info call 760-322-6059.
Now we will have time to travel and hope to see everyone at other nudist places.

Loves being naked. Plays well with others!

That is a tragic loss! Makes one wonder what resort is next on death row, so to speak. In California, we're losing beaches to textiles, too.

All the more reason to go to your nudist resorts and patronize them. I could interject my own viewpoint and encourage being sensitive to newcomers to nudist venues, and avoid shunning them because they're not in your clique. Not accusing any forum members here of that, but there are some cliques out there that continually effectuate lowering wet blankets on new people who would simply like to say "hi." Make people feel glad that they are accepted as worthwhile people when they arrive at a nudist resort for the first time.

Another problem is that young folks seem not to get into organized nudism, or into establishment anything. This can result, naturally, in attrition within resorts.

i have read about Terra Cotta for years and i suspect the owners put a lot of time into it. years ago i was a member of a small mom & pop nudist camp and other than a large pool and hot tub it was pretty primative and i remember once telling the owner that i would like to open one similar when i retired, well after he finished telling me the amount of $$$$ invested not to mention the time involved and little return other than the love of being a nudist ( they lived in a double wide trailer and drove a old ford compact car) i relized you had to have the same mindset or be a big corporation that could run a exclusive resort. yeah i'll just be a visitor.
