I recommend posting photos only with the permission of and credit to the photographer. Photos should also have a description saying what they're a photograph of.

We do request the photographer's credit and some specific information describing the photo, so if we choose to include it in the gallery, it is properly captioned and credited. Thanks for the reminder, Rich!

FYI, credit is meaningless. You need permission to use any photo for any purpose. Yes, even right clicking and 'save as' and using it in powerpoint or desktop. Using them on a website is apretty easy find and many a photographer has made easy money when his photos are used withour permission. If they are copyrighted you can get up to $150,000 PER IMAGE. For a site like this they would probably just get a few thousand or whatever assets they could.

Hard facts about photography copyright. Its expensive not to get permission.

I'm glad you pointed out how serious copyright infringement can be. However, I don't think think your statement is quite true - at least not by US copyright law. It's true, giving permission does nothing to relieve one of copyright infringment.

However, it's not true that someone needs permission to use any photo for any purpose. You don't need permission if copyright has expired, or if the purpose falls under fair use. News, editorial and education are all examples where copyright images can often be used legally. I believe that courts have ruled the thumbnail links to the owner's page and other similar use falls under fair use.

I'm glad you pointed how harsh infringement penalties can be. However, those number are very rare and I've never heard of that happening under casual use. It's also important to understand, that even though images are copyright immediately upon creation, one can't sue for copyright infringement unless images are registered with the library of congress. (Again in U.S.) If passed, the Orphaned Works legislation will likely get rid of all these statutory damages and limit damages to reasonable compensation only.

While I think you over simplified the legality of image use, I'm glad you brought it up. People take copyright infingement far to casually.

The official government website on copyright is actually fairly easy to read and undrstand:

http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#toc

For those who wish to know more about releases, I recommend:

http://www.newmodels.com/Releases.html

The above relates to U.S. law and may not hold true in other countries. None of this should be taken as legal advice.
