I recently spent a few days boating on Lake Powell, an enormous lake on the Colorado River spanning the Utah-Arizona border. It is within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and run by the National Park Service, so public nudity is probably technically illegal. However, the lake is 145 miles long, with dozens of side canyons that provide ideal sites for nude swimming and sunning. Even when we were boating along the main channel, there was usually enough space for us to be able to keep our distance from other boats, so I was nude roughly 3/4 of the time. The red-rock desert scenery is beyond my powers of description; you'll just have to see it for yourself.

PS: The Summer 2007 issue of "N" Magazine (26.4) features an article on nudism in Utah that has information and pictures of Lake Powell. Elsewhere in the article you might find a couple of pictures of my wife and me.

PPS: Being only marginally computer-literate myself, I sent Admin a few pictures from Lake Powell in the hope that he can somehow insert them into this post. If they don't appear fairly soon ... well, we tried.

[Hey Doc, pics are posted! Admin]

Lake powell is indeed an amazing site. We live just over a hundred miles away and I've been there a few times, but not enough. Never been with other nudists though so now that we have a somewhat active group out here in Western Colorado (gjnaturists.com) I'm hoping to get a group of us out there one day. Ideally would be to rent a houseboat and have a couple of jet skis or a speed boat to tag along. A houseboat is a great way to tan all over while browsing the canyons and waterways.

Body shame, like prejuduce, is not natural. It is learned from others and benefits no one.

BFGinCO, I agree that a houseboat + speedboat would be the way to go with a group of people. The task of piloting a houseboat should not be taken lightly, however, and beaching and anchoring one properly requires several able bodies, preferably with some experience.

Since you're in the Grand Junction area, have you ever been to Orvis Hot Springs in Ridgway?

Our first houseboat trip, of many, was on Lake Powell out of the BullFrog marina...way up on the north end.

The family we went with were not nudists and so we needed to remain clothed/covered when we were in their presence.

The Prof and I were going a bit crazy wearing clothes all the time so we took the rented 18' runabout out for a cruise and once we got clear of the house boat...the clothes sat on the deck of the boat til we got back in sight.

We passed several boaters and a houseboat with topless and nude people on board. We stood up and waved and got the thumbs up and actually got applauded by the house boat with naked people on it.

There was one day that we went up one arm and didn't see another boat or houseboat most of the day!

We plan on going on another houseboat trip and it will be a nude...or at least clothing optional. Done lots and lots of nude boating and PWC'ing on Havasu, Mojave, Mead and Powell.

Spent four days at Lake Powell last month. Once I was out of the marina at Bull Frog, I was nude and remained that way for most of the four days. Only had to put something on a few hours in the evening because of the biting flies and hiking to Rainbow, then the marina at Dangling Rope. The rest of the time I didn't feel the need to put anything on. The wife did join me once we were camped for the night and in the morning. A few skinny dipping times out on the lake also happened. Once the trip was over, it was sure hard to get dressed heading back into Bull Frog.

Naturistdoc, Yes, I have been to Orvis many times. Thinking of going there again soon. We used to go more until we got a hot tub and don't go as often since then, but we moved last Nov and still don't have it hooked up so might go soon.

Orvis is very nice although a little small. I like being able to get out and walk around more than 100 ft but it's still nice.

Hmm ... one of my best friends bought some property in Ridgway for his retirement. Orvis sounds like one more reason to go visit him.

We were hardly the first people to go naked in Glen Canyon. This video is a bittersweet recollection of the building of Glen Canyon Dam to form Lake Powell. In 1958 a small team including a model named Katie Lee and a photographer paddled down the river for the last time before the dam was finished. Along the way they made numerous nude portraits of Katie in the spectacular scenery. I think you will agree, she was beautiful then, and is beautiful now.

A slight correction. Katie Lee was not a model. She was a modestly successful singer, actress, and writer in the 1950s and 60s. She is now 95 years old and still lives in Arizona.

The Spring 2015 issue of "N" (34.3) has a nice article about nude houseboating on Lake Powell. It brought back fond memories. Coincidentally or not, another article in that same issue has a picture taken by Mike Cooney back in 2006 at Diamond Fork Hot Springs in Utah with (among others) Ms. ND and me.

I am sad to report that Katie Lee has passed away at the age of 98. She remained active in her efforts to protect and restore Western rivers to the end of her days. Katie was one of a kind.
