I've never been to Lighthouse Beach but hope to go this summer sometime, likely on a weekday as that's when it will be less densely populated. Can anyone tell me anything about the beach? How do I get there from the NY Thruway? How much is admission? Anything in particular that I need to know so I will get there and not embarrass myself? lol I'm hopeful that SOMEBODY here has been there and can 'give me the goods.'

Melissa

That is just so sad! Here's hoping things will change and an agreement can be reached to bring naturism back to Lighthouse, Smith Point, and Kismet.

It looks like the Clothing Optional ban on Fire Island is a done deal.

The news regarding Lighthouse as well as the nude beach west of Smith Point County Park is not encouraging. The hot topic is is that there will no longer be any nude use at Lighthouse, Kismet, or west of Smith Point. According to some published reports, it is because of Sandy and the destruction to the dunes, the rowdiness of certian people that congregate on weekends, lack of law enforcement, damage to the ecological environment by people and by lack facilities (toilets)people peeing in the water or at the waters edge, as well as pressure from town councils opposed to nudity. Supposedly NAC and AANR ar sitting down and trying to hash things out. Let's hope they get it done before beach season.

I heard that...I'm going to be on the Island this summer and that was a planned stop!

I never thought that Columbus Day 2012 would the last day I was able to spend time with friends au-naturally at Lighthouse beach. I'm sorry to share this sad news. First the place gets totally trashed by Super Storm Sandy, and now the NPS has discontinued clothing optional use of Fire Island National Seashore.

Here is the link from Lighthouse Beach Times:

Hi everyone. This is our first post on the forum. We have enjoyed the nudist lifestyle since 2003. We just wanted to join the discussion and offer our observations and opinions. During the week, Lighthouse can be very relaxing. On the weekends, you can barely have room to move as people are crowded quite close. If you walk east, past the Lighthouse itself which is an area for textiles only; there is another area where you can be nude. That beach is Kismet and it is less crowded and more couple-oriented. Smith Point is also a great beach especially to walk naked. We were told that on weekdays you can walk past the clothing-optional sign travelling west without a problem. We love both beaches during the summer months as we both love to beach naked.
Parking is easier at Smith Point no matter what time of the day it is, but Lighhouse parking early any day of the week is your best bet.

Oops...that will teach me for not checking this site first before venturing out into cyberworld. Found another topic here with some more current information.

This link is specific to Lighthouse and at least has been updated for 2012. http://www.lighthousebeachtimes.com/

Looking to branch out a little this year and maybe head north to Lighthouse beach instead of south to Gunnison for a change of pace. It's roughly the same amount of travel time for me either way. I'm still searching online, but haven't found proof that it is still an official CO beach. Can anyone let me know it's status?

How has it been this year so far? Anyone care to report?

How's traffic?

Depends on the weather. I would say 9-10 on a nice weekend during the week I don't think its as big of an issue. I don't know for sure since I can only get there on the weekend. We went on Memorial day and were there at 9 and the lot was somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 full. Its a great beach. Have fun

Tubby - Thanks so much for all the details. I had no idea that beach and area were so busy. We usually go to Gunnison, but we definitely want to visit Lighthouse this summer at least once. Judging from what you say, it looks like we should shoot for a weekday rather than the weekend. Have you found out anything further about the CO status going away? That really concerns me, but I'm sure there is anything I can do about it.

On weekends when its a good beach day weather-wise it does fill up for several reasons...

There had been considerable erosion at field 5, so the park closed down up to half of the parking area depending on beach conditions. Hopefully Field 5 will be fully open this year. NY State is in th midst of a big beach replenishment project at Robert Moses state park.

Field 5 is also popular with families because there is a nice playground there for the kids and a picnic area with grills. Then of course there are the lighthouse visitors, Fire Island day trippers (Kismet, Saltaire, etc.) and of course the fine folks that park there to visit Lighthouse Beach. Believe it or not, Field 5 even gets packed on weekdays during the summer.

The biggest crowds converge during beach season when Robert Moses has Lifeguards on duty, so from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, expect the lot to fill up on weekends if the weather is nice. We should get some releif on weekdays this year if indeed the entire lot is open, which it should be.

There are four fields at Robert Moses. Field 5 is the year-round lot that is always open. Field 2 is the next one that is regularly open, but it is way down to the western part of the park. Field 2 has a golf course and a complex of Beach Volleyball Courts. I think the lot at field 2 is also a bit bigger than the others. Next to open (usually weekends only) is Field 3, which is right next to field 2, still a long hike. Field 3 is also half the size of the others. Finally, Field 4 is usually never open unless there is a special event happening. Field 4 is next to Field 5, so hiking from Field 4 to Lighthouse Beach is do-able. Its like the walk from Field 5 to Lightouse East Beach between the Lighthouse and Kismet. The problem with Field 4 is that it is usually closed. There is no Field 1 at Robert Moses.

So if you want to go to Lighthouse Beach on a summer weekend, plan on getting there early.
