The - - - Inn website (www.desertshadows.com) indicates that the resort has just been purchased by an 'investor group'. Does anytone have background on the purchase, what this investor group is, and what their plans are for the resort?

Thanks.

Don't want to hijack this tread Dee but we were discussing the Mira Vista Resort with a couple we met over SuperBowl Sunday week at Terra Cotta and they spoke very highly of MVR.

So much so that the Prof is talking about a road trip with a stop at MVR for a few days to check it out ourselves. Then there's the possibility of a meeting with friends from Colorado there in October for the weekend. They have a hard time getting away with 3 kids so that may not happen but the road trip is in the planning stages.

It would be great to just go with backpacks on and on a motorcycle. Know anyone that has a new bike???!!! Just kidding...I'm done with those things!

Now back on topic;

Like any new manager/owner of any business, these new owners will have to see what is working and what isn't. We don't go there near enough times for them to feel the $$ we spend or not spend. Those that visit most weekends will have to speak up and tell the new owners that it's just too expensive to go to for day use.

Of course, a note from Dee and others like my wife and I couldn't hurt to let them know that we used to use that $35 jump in their day rate to have dinner in town after we left the resort! I can't say for certain that the jump in price will keep us away entirely but we're more apt to go to Terra Cotta for the day.

Las Casuelas Terraza is one of our favorite places to eat. I only wish we didn't fade out so quickly after dinner and want to return to the Terra Cotta hot tub with friends so quickly after dinner. LCT has some great music and dancing opportunities on the other side of the bar!

Other favorite places to eat;

LG's Steak House-downtown
The Chop House-downtown
Kiser Grill-downtown
Ruby's-downtown
The Hogs Breath Inn - La Quinta
PF Changs-Rancho Mirage

We love that restaurant and tried to eat there last visit but had to settle for their sister site down 111. (can't spell the name so won't try)

I agree with FireProf and you. This sharp increase in day fees will hurt and even though we are overnighters (due to living up in WA) it angers me that they would do this to people. I could have seen going from $40 to $50 but NOT $75 in one jump. I may write them and voice my displeasure and see what kind of reply I get.

Mira Vista is looking better and better for a fall trip destination!

FireProf you are an amazingly perceptive man. We apparently spoke with the same - - - Villa owners or else there is a commonality of exclusionary snobbishness among the new investor group. Let a little time pass; nothing will alter a resort owner's opinion more then a precipitous drop-off in guests.

Knowing what I know about DSI and what we've heard from other naturists this past week, I would say that the $75 day use fee will infact hurt DSI. It will undoubtedly help the smaller naturist Inn's and make it difficult for some, like us, to get into these smaller places for the day.

True, there is lots of money being spent in Palm Springs. Many people that go there do have money and spend it on golf, accomodations, clothing and the like. A very small fraction of these people stay at DSI. In all our visits some of those there usually eat at the DSI restaurant and many others bring their own coolers with lunch and drinks poolside.

We've listen to so many conversations from the people that live and stay at DSI. Their conversations are no different than most anywhere else, "where's there a nice place to eat where it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg for a burger," "I just got this killer deal on these shoes, clothes, art....etc.," "the outlet mall in Cabazon is the place to go to spend your money, it's too expensive in RM, PS or P Desert.

So.......to answer your question Cheri, "in my opinion," yes, DSI will suffer from a $75 day use visit fee. What is troubling is that some of these new owners, who we've actually met, seem to think they are rich and well to do and this fee will keep the rifraft out of their resort. They don't realize that some of us that visit but don't put on the "airs" as they do, actually make more money than they do but are not pretending to be something they are not.

We've visited there many times and unless we are going to visit someone or meet some internet friends there, we won't be back to spend the day or longer if their attitude doesn't change.

Desert Shadows has always been pricey. Moreover, high end properties around Palm Springs including the golf meccas of Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert almost take pride in flaunting their lofty accommodation prices. Thrown in an additional 11.5% bed tax and a two to three night stay in the lower desert can quickly run into four figures when one calculates the hotel with meals and entertainment: A lot to let your buns feel the warmth of the Sun.

Perhaps a wee bit more insidious is the desire to attract Jim Backus (as Thurston Howell III) and his wife rather than a guy off the street, baseball cap on backwards, looking for nekid women. The Howells with more disposable income will stay longer, spend more, and Thurstan is more likely to say "oh lovee" than " I ain't seen dynamic ta-tas like that since the Palomino in Vegas!"

Desert Shadows almost single-handedly led the gentrification movement in north Palm Springs which had become an ominous zone of transition in the late 1980s.

Hey shylobster, you may have stepped on somebody's toes, but unless you make a personal attack, I don't think you have committed any grievous error. Hang in there, and you'll do just fine.

I think too many of the resorts/clubs are cliquish and that turns the newer nudist away. I know that my wife and I are very skittish when it comes to picking a club. It seems much easier to go to a clothing optional beach, or out in the woods by your self. The impression that has been given by this thread (right or wrong) is that the owners at DS fit the definition of cliquish. If I'm wrong, I would hope that someone will correct the improper impression.

I'm glad to see this development at - - - . Some Palm Springs area resorts seem to try to walk the line between nudist and sexually active. I hope - - - asserts itself as a true naturist resort.

On the contrary shylobster, your candid observations and input is what resort owners need to improve their properties for guests. There is a difference between simple whining and an accurate observation about excessive lodging cost or the nudist experience at resort A vs. resort B. Please keep us abreast on nudist beaches/clubs you have frequented and nudist life from your perspective as a newly single nudist male in mid-life.

Laguna del Sol is a very friendly nudist resort, open in their policies toward singles and the one time we stayed there the accommodations were more than acceptable. The only drawback is its location, a fair drive from the Sacramento airport.

Can you please tell us when was the last time you visited DSI?

No, have never posted before anywhere. I found this posting place because I am looking for info about nude cruises and saw info about DSI selling and cutting out famlies and single men. I was last at DSI in December for a day and had a nice time, but apparently no longer.

shynglobster wrote: "I am actually looking for a cruise in 2008. Any suggestions/experiences?"

My suggestion: Post a new topic seeking cruise information. This thread is about DSI...whether one likes that particular resort, or not. People with cruise information may not see your request in this thread. That will help keep this thread on topic. Thanks

Sorry, I typed badly. Instead of DSI, I am suggesting Laguna del Sol near Sacramento--family and single friendly,--which has a nicer restaurant and facilities than DSI (+ no snooty condo owners) and even the luxury suites only cost $105/night. Another option where families and singles are always welcomed is Sun Island Resort near El Cajon, which has nice new rooms, ripping water volleyball, weekly dances plus special events, billiards, hiking, outdoor movies, community kitchen, theme restaurant, a new store, respectful friendly crowd, volleyball, tennis, etc.--new conversation pool in the works, little houses to rent, etc. I am actually looking for a cruise in 2008. Any suggestions/experiences?
