Hi All,

Since I've become a nudist I've been very disappointed in the lack of nudist clubs in the Philadelphia area. While I've had great fun at nudist non-landed club events, I've always had to travel several hours to get to them. After a lot of thinking and planning, I feel that I'm ready to begin a non-landed club in the Philadelhpia area to serve those in the tri-state area who are interested in nude recreation.

At this time I am working in close contact with AANR to start the club (as yet there is no name for the club... feel free to give ideas!) Also, I've made several contacts with local health clubs in search of finding a location for monthly nude swims from November until May-ish. I'm hopeful that I'll have more information on this shortly.

What I'd like to know before I get too much further is whether there is truly an interest in this area for a club to begin. If you would, please respond to me here or via e-mail (tree_beside_water@softhome.net) and let me know if you're interested in joining the club, what kind of events you'd like to see in this area, and whether you'd be interested in meeting as part of a larger group for a clothing-optional dinner at a local restaurant or a swim day at someone's pool to discuss the upcoming club.

I am very serious about starting this club and I'm working hard to make it happen. With some help from everyone, I think we can and will create a wonderful club in the Philadelphia area- something we've needed for a long time.

Melissa

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment to update you about events that are
transpiring with the club. Here are the updates:

* Our website, www.phillynudists.com , was established on August 1st
and is developing rapidly. Professional web designers have
volunteered to develop our site so that it looks great!

* A yahoo group was established on August 1st to open communication
among potential members

* As of 8/17 we now have an address PO Box 1325 Havertown, PA 19083

* Our club phone number was established and is now in use: 610-352-
2601

* We applied to The Naturist Society (TNS) for club affiliation on
8/17

* Dinner at the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia has been confirmed and
scheduled for October 9th at 6pm. Let me know if you'd like to
reserve a spot!

* Once we get the ok from Chuck's wife Jeanne, we're planning an
informal get-together at their home on September 19th

* I've been communicating with several health clubs in the area to
schedule monthly swims during the winter months. I visited one club
last night and the facilities will be adequate for our needs. The
rental manager was ok with us renting the facility but he needed
further authorization. Around 10 minutes ago I received a phone call
from the general manager of the club and he seems happy to have us,
just has to get an ok from the owner (which he seems to think will be
forthcoming.) We'll probably have a definite ok or nay by the end of
the day. Keep your fingers crossed!

* We established an Employer Identification Number with the federal
government on 8/19, which is needed to open a bank account. That
will be opened once we have a letter from TNS establishing us as a
club.

* Paperwork is all filled out to become an AANR affiliate. Because
of the hurricane we have been asked not to send it in before next
week. This paperwork will be sent in on 8/25 or so.

* Membership information and applications are currently being
developed. Look for more information soon about becoming a PhiNu
Member!

Let me know if there is any further information you'd like to know
about the club's progress!

Melissa

melissa, if you are going to incorporate as a non-profit, dont forget to fill out that paperwork too.

if in future you buy things, you will not have to pay sales tax.

plus there are a number of other advantages as well.

talk with cheri, i'm sure she knows the additional procedures you need/

calmnude, Trust me...Melissa and I talk/email daily about her new club. LOL

A Not For Profit rather than a non-profit is what's needed. A social/fraternal club doesn't fall under the IRS's guidelines for a non-profit. A LONG time ago when I set Travelites, Inc. up as a 501(c)7 as that, it cost me $150. It's probably more expensive than that right now.

Melissa -- best wishes on getting your club started.

I'm a little confused about the difference between "not for profit" and "non-profit". Sales tax exemptions in PA are only for charitable, religious or educational organizations -- social and fraternal clubs must pay sales tax on taxable purchases.

Many fraternal organizations exist as "unincorporated associations". Incorporation is a much more formal existence. Usually requires board of directors, periodic meetings, articles of incorporation, bylaws, etc. -- advantages are limited liability and ease of transfer of ownership (stock).

I don't know the difference, either. After many long talks, though, Cheef and I decided to be a for-profit organization (realizing we're not going to get rich off of it) as there have been several clubs in our area that were great until the leaders got bored or overwhelmed with it. Making it a for-profit organization, we're thinking, might motivate leaders to stay or if a leader does have to leave maybe it wouldn't be so hard to get a new leader. Our goal is to provide opportunities for nude recreation, though, not to get rich. I'm doubting we'll make any money for quite some time and even then it will be only a small bit.

A corporation can be a board of one depending on laws in the state in which you incorporate, but minutes need to be recorded at the meeting.

Not for Profit is a 501(c)7 under IRS Tax law. Each has to pay sales tax on those items NOT bought for resale. For instance, I buy bathsheets for members to buy. I pay sales tax when I buy them and do not charge those who buy them additional sales tax.

Last night, October 9th, thirteen members of PhiNu met at the White
Dog Cafe in downtown Philadelphia to enjoy a clothes-free meal with
friends. Our young and diverse group enjoyed stimulating discussions
about every subject from politics (how CAN people fight about teh
presidential elections when they're on the same side?????), religion,
Halloween, singles vs couples in nudism, and just about everything
else. Some of our very heated discussion about politics came from
the bathrooms... the signs on the bathroom doors said 'Republicans'
and 'Democrats' rather than 'Men' and 'Women.'

The highlight of the evening occured when an unknown woman ventured
in to our black-draped room to see what we were doing and was quite
surprised to find a group of people enjoying a meal in the buff. Our
room went silent for a few moments as we listened to her shocked
report to fellow diners about what she saw. Sadly, Cheef wouldn't
let me go introduce myself to her and tell her about nudism.... maybe
she could have joined the group.

The evening ended with full stomachs, commitments to meet again soon,
and several new PhiNu members. We look forward to meeting at the
White Dog again soon to enjoy a wonderful meal (I HIGHLY recommend
the hot fudge sundaes!), great conversation, and comfort in dining.

Melissa,

Is the owner of the restaurant also a nudist or just a really open minded, non-judgmental kinda person?

I think it was great that he/she allowed you to do what your group did.

Now if we can just get our restaurant owners here in California to ask you......

Smoking or non-smoking....?

Clothed or nude dining...?

Now that's what I would call progress!!

It was a regular, non-nudist restaurant that happened to be open-minded enough to allow us to use their facilities. We had such fun!

While we have not yet attended any events, my Wife and I have joined Phi Nu and plan to attend a house party coming up. Melissa was a church friend for several years without the subject having arisen. We are looking forward to it, and possibly to hosting events at a large old farmhouse that I own about 30 miles/50 kilometers North of central Phila.

Is PhiNu still in operation? My wife and I live in the Philadelphia area and would probably enjoy some of the house parties and other non-landed events described in this thread (especially in the winter months). Related to this, is PhiNu co-founder Melissa Starr still an active nudist? Her lively and informative posts on Philly-area nudist activities have been very useful to us, though it's now been some time since she updated her website and posted here. It's largely because of her reports that my wife and I tried out Penn Sylvan Health Society (recently redubbed PSHS, Inc.) in Mohnton, PA, and we now go there all the time. I hope she's all right.
