Are there any beach regulars planning to visit the Gunnison Beach during the second weekend in August? Would be really helpful.

The Rangers are there most of the time. Stay away from the dunes. When you walk down the boardwalk, you should see the volleyball court. Look for a small brown building to your right. That is the snack bar. Stay between those 2 places and you shouldn't have any problems. Remember you are on a PUBLIC beach. If you want privacy, go to a club. Gunnison is a LEGAL clothing optional beach. Being nude on a nude beach is NOT a crime. Don't DO anything you won't want printed in a tabloid. Just being NAKID shouldn't be a problem. There are pictures of me on flickr wearing ALMOST nothing. I may not like some of them but, I am NOT ashamed either. If you go to a public place in your birthday suit, you can't complain if someone (your boss, your mother, etc) sees you. I always bring spray on sunscreen. That is ONE less chance someone might see me rubbing my penis.

If you come upon any picture takers, tell them that you don't want your picture taken. Cameras are taboo at any nudist venue, and are only in place when there are no other persons around.

Hey guys thanks for all the information. Appreciate. Could you also let me know what stuff to get to the beach. Are there stuff available on rent at the beach, like umbrella, or should we buy it?

You can rent an umbrella at the snack stand, but this late in the season, you could find some deals of beach stuff. Don’t forget a rubber mallet to slam that umbrella into the sand. On the other hand, ask a friendly neighbor to borrow theirs.

Bring some refreshments with you, or you can buy them at the snack stand. Be prepared to pour out the bucks though. The Department of the Interior Parks Department is a capitalistic enterprise. If you bring a cooler, remember it is a very long hike from the parking lot, through the woods, across a short boardwalk, and then a stroll through the loose sand.

Or if you plan on going to the beach often and you can swing the $180 - $200 you can pick up a Wheeleez® Beach Caddy at http://www.beachtimeproducts.com/
They usually have many different things for the beach goers.

They are right on Route 36 on the way to Sandy Hook. Exact location; 780 HWY 36, Belford, NJ 732 787 0070

If my car was big enough, I’d almost buy one of those Beach Caddys!
I travel light and my lady friend knows that I do so it is a “bring only what you can, and carry all that you bring”.

As for the beach, you will find 99% of the people very friendly as well as helpful. The beach is like socialism in practice. No one will leave you hanging by yourself. As for the miniscule malcontents, they are everywhere in society, clothed or naked to the sun.

Don’t worry, you’ll have a great time. The flies are gone, very few jellyfish are skirting the shoreline, and the surf has been very calm these past few days.

I was there today. Arrived before 2pm and there was plenty of parking. It was fairly crowded at the beach but probably not like on a weekend. It was quite hot probably around 90 but the water felt chilly, maybe 70 tops. Saw one big jellyfish and there were plenty of annoying flys. As for pervs and troublesome characters taking pictures, I didn't notice any but I sat right by the water. Even if there were, there really isn't many photo ops available. In other words and to put it gently, the visitors aren't the most attractive people at this beach. Seemed to be 75% of them belong in the over 50 age group with their sags and bulges. As Seinfeld said, only 5% of the population is attractive, at this beach that would be pushing it, no offense intended.

Here are my gripes and ways that would make this beach nicer what with that steep $10 entry you pay. How about extending the boardwalk closer to the beach. It can be brutal in the heat and barefoot to walk so far in the sand. And how about some decent shower facilities. It's ridiculous to get dressed and to have to walk all the way back to the pavillion to shower, (with your bathing suit on) and then go into the bathroom and change. How hard would it be to run a waterline or even garden hose close to the beach and put up some portable showers so you could clean off there.

Yep, that walk is a hike and a half. We all talk about it. But the heat and the drudgery of the hot loose sand builds character. In all things, a great effort yields a great reward.

As for the ugliness of the beach, we all cannot be Barbie & Ken. Nevertheless, we try our best. In fact, look at other beaches. The people are of all the same cross culture. Some fat, some skinny, some with scars, and some missing a limb. If you want “good” looking naked people, close your eyes, imagine them and they will appear. Or just go with the flow. I am sorry we cannot all live up to your expectations of museum beauty. Some of us do have to work for a living.

Now that is out of the way, let’s talk about the walk as well as the parking and sorts.
It would be nice to have the parking lot right by the beach, however, what of the nesting birds?

A shower right inside the clothing optional area would be very nice. But that costs money. As for the $10 beach-parking fee, if you plan on going to Sandy Hook more than 5 times in one season a beach pass of $50 will offset that cost. As for that boardwalk idea, there is nothing stopping any of us on collecting the funds on our own and extending that boardwalk. I heard, but I cannot verify it, that the Friends of Gunnison, aka FOG paid for the gray plastic portion of the boardwalk. I have not seen that group for a while, so I have no idea if it is true.

The beach is public land so we all have the right to ask that certain improvements be made. Or we can volunteer to do it on our own.

The showers near the beach would have a problem of drainage. We will not be allowed to impact the beach area to a great extent. There are always limitations.

heatherton- I agree with you on several points. First the $10 is for the lifeguards. You pay the same no matter which beach you use. The boardwalk(longer and WIDER) and the showers (at the end of the boardwalk) would be a big improvement. Atlantic city and many other places have showers closer to the beach. The crowd at Gunnison is NOT the same as the other beaches. It is older and more male. I just take off my glasses(I'm very near sighted). I havn't been on the weekend but, I understand the crowd is younger and a little more balanced. I'm always surprised to see more young women than young men.

Well, every beach has it's flaws, as well as it's positives. It's just what you make of the day that matters most. I was there today, and the lifeguards were right on top of things when a storm rolled in. Once the thunder was heard, they got everyone out of the water, and told all to clear the beach. This is obviously because of the incident last weekend where 3 people were struck by lightning on one of the non-swimming beaches on the Hook, one fatally. Not sure how long they closed the beach for, I was leaving early anyway, about 12:30. I would assume that it had to be for at least 30 minutes after thelast sight of lightning. Thats usually the standard for most outdoor events. I did notice the park gates had no rangers in them as I left, so they may have shut the whole park down once the storm came in. Made leaving, and the traffic on the bridge a lot easier to deal with. See what happens this week as I take my usual vacation at the best beach in NJ. Heres sun in your eye, and everywhere else. lol BareNJ

Heatherton, I also agree with you on several points.

As for the physical improvements, the problem is $$$$$.

It is true that several years ago, a collection was taken to build the boardwalk. I contributed, at that time. It is also true that Friends of Gunnison aka FOG was honcho of the collection and project. But personally I am not among the elite to get into that club (they are a clique).

Perhaps a collection could be taken to extend the boardwalk. I would appreciate it going at least to the first sign that warns that you might see nude sunbathers beyond this point.

On to the topic of 75 percent being over 50. On weekdays, that is because younger people have to work to earn a living. I personally am retired. That more younger people are there on weekends, that could be. I avoid the weekends.

to be honest, and again, i'm just being honest here. the gay/bisexual men actually have a decent amount of "in-shape" and "toned" bodies.

Also I was thinking about going Wednesday...anyone else going?

Seems to me that once one attains middle-age,one cares a lot less how one looks to others.I'm not gay,but I keep myself in shape, yet I'm not worried about Gunnison-goers that have gone to seed.As I always tell my self-conscious new recruits:"Relax...It's far from a beauty contest down there."It's not about that at all.

The $10 to get on Sandy Hook is nothing.Parking fees and a beach badge anywhere else in Jersey will run you more than that, they'll make you wear a wet suit all day,and your ears will be bombarded by boom-boxes and boardwalk hawkers.Nothing like that on SH,so it's a no-brainer to use the only legal nude beach north of Miami.

I like it so much that I'm looking to re-locate near it from New York. Now that's an endorsement of the place!

I don't care one bit of how anyone else looks physically on the beach. These people have the gumption to nude in public, so who am I to judge their looks if they're comfortable with themselves?

Personally, I like the diversity of all the bodies: short, tall, fat, thin, muscular, lanky, tan, dark, pale, pierced/non-pierced, tattooed/non-tattooed, shaven, unshaven, old, young. It's just kinda nice to see how unique we all are on the surface, but realize we're pretty alike in philosophies to why we're on that beach. And behind each body is a story, so all the different bodies are like hearing a different story.

Honestly, who would like to go to a nude beach and see the same type of bodies for each person, and nothing but? It would get boring and repetitive, the same story over and over again.

What the heck are all these itchy bumps on the tops of my feet? I went Friday and by Sunday morning I had like a dozen mosquito bite looking bumps. mosquito bites go away after a few hours but I still have these on Monday morning. Is it those damn flys? How long for it to clear up?
