Sand "flies",I think...No sand fleas this far up the coast,my dear.
The flies are bad enough. They're certainly on Gunnison from time to time, but they don't leave a mark on me,as annoying as they can be on occasion.Ya'll want to meet up with a truly carnivorous insect, travel to Rhode Island and points north, all the way to southern Maine...
The beaches there are pristine, the water cool and clear, but the local green-heads will excise a lump of flesh from you,and happily defecate in the hole that they create on their way off to feed their maggots. The sand flies at Gunnison are kid-stuff by comparison;a mere nuisance.Grenn-heads will drive even the most stalwart sun-lover off the beach when they're at their worst up North. And,unlike the way things are in New England,we get to battle the native pests in NJ totally nude.Makes a difference! It's all about commitment.

Also I was thinking about going Wednesday...anyone else going?
I should be there Thursday. I'm more tanned now than my picture. I try to stay in front of the snack bar.

the gawkers at the beach were evident even on a monday. my girlfriend and I went for her first time and she was so put off by the creepy pasty-looking guys who stared her down that we left immediately for a regular beach. on top of this, we were approached by another older man as we were leaving who started prodding us about our reasons for leaving and pressured us to stay and "get naked". he even went so far as to ask if we'd "seen each other naked before"; i mean no offense dude but no 20 year old girl really wants you prodding and inquiring about our sex life, thanks. and seriously, if he was a regular (the deep tan might give it away) you really aren't helping your case by bugging us when we're trying to get away from gawkers.
ive been to the beach before, always with a female friend, and nearly every time they're turned off by these creepy single guys. my girlfriend wasn't at all modest about being nude on the beach, she was however extremely uncomfortable with the fact that as soon as we sat down (near the water mind you) , 5 or 6 new single guys set up their stuff around us.
until people can get it through their heads that it shouldn't be a question of "see and be seen" but rather A NORMAL BEACH WHERE EVERYONE JUST HAPPENS TO BE NAKED, this stuff will still go on. its really unfortunate. we went knowing people would see us nude, that's no big deal, but no girl wants to be leered at and creeped on, and its a shame that we werent able to enjoy the beach because of this stuff.

Hello there,
I know it's short notice, but I am going to go tomorrow (Wednesday 8/6). I find myself with an unexpected day off. I'm not a regular, though, but a newbie like you. I've been trying to get my wife to go for a while but she is very hesitant, so I figured why not go myself.
My biggest worry is being there as a single guy. I am there just to relax, experience the beach, and will probably stay towards the back of the beach for privacy. My worry is that people will see me, a single guy, and take me for one of those "creepy pervs" that I've read about on here.
Let me know if by any chance you are going on 8/6.

I wouldn't worry about being a pervy single guy as there are so many single guys there that you will be more in the majority... Honestly, I suspect the guys at the back of the beach more than the ones enjoying the water. Relax and enjoy...

I am going to go as a first timer on Wednesday 8/6. I've been trying to get my wife to go for 2 years now but she wont go for it. (She is pregnant now also, so that doesnt help her wanting to go.. lol)
Anyway, I will probably be a little on the nervous side and will keep to myself in the back. I wouldnt mind going in the water, but would be too worried that I would come back to my stuff (aka, MY CLOTHES), and find them gone.

Now that’s funny! Clothes gone! It would most likely not happen, even as a joke. Everyone watches out for the other guy, not only at this beach, but life in general. It is all about that empathy thing. Well, usually, that is.
Anyway, as a couple, or a group or even single, we all watch our own. It may not look like it at first, but we watch each other’s back. Ask yourself this quick question; if you saw someone struggling, wouldn’t you lend a hand to help? You bet you will, it’s human nature, a tribal kind of thing. So you clothes, your stuff is safe as long as you want to be part of the tribe, so to speak. Going off into the way back dunes I think is distancing you from people, as people will be put off with that. I’m not saying to barge in to another group but a quick acknowledgement of folks around you is always a good thing. Most people want acceptance and so do those people in groups when a new person shows up nearby.
Just hang loose.
On the quirkiness for the younger generation that was addressed elsewhere, yes creeps can be found. As for gawkers, if you feel uncomfortable, you could ignore them with indifference, however, with that ever so watchful eye. I have been on this beach when very attractive single women have been there. These women exhibit that look of confidence and she picks and chooses whom she will allow to gawk or talk to her. It is sort of an ancient tribal ritual. Only the strong are allowed to approach, all others are left to wonder.
As for those awkward questions and suggestions that seem to appear, a polite but firm, “not interested”, will usually put things to rest. Any persistence can be met with that disarming giggle. That is one ultimate sign of rejection a fragile ego cannot withstand.
If you are a couple, saddle up to other couples. It is strength in numbers kind of thing. Besides, it is a great way to make new friends.
Good luck, and be yourself at all times.

I too say, "Just hang loose." You will forget your nervousness and will enjoy the invigorating feel of the sun and breeze on your bare skin. I would go closer to the water.

I hope mikew1226 had a nice day. As others have said. Folks look after each other. I've even gone back to my car while leaving everything on the beach. I don't bring my wallet to Gunnison, just like I don't carry it in the casinos in AC. I bring my ID and some cash, my credit cards etc. are either locked in the trunk of my car or in my room safe. I try to remember to bring the spare car keys(the ones I give to the repair shop guys). I worry about loosing them more than someone taking them. As for the other issue (Adam27), I guess they picked an open section on the beach. That may have seemed like a good idea. But, the vultures took advantage. There is a recent post from a couple who ended up down in the gay area. At least they had equal opportunity gawkers.

I just thought of a suggestion. Take your wife with you, on the condition that she is allowed to keep her clothes on, or wear a bathing suit. Gunnison Beach is clothing optional, and some people opt to be clothed. Especially with a bathing suit, your wife would fit in.

Hey Mike, we should be there on the 9th. We still haven't prepared for the trip. Have to reserve a rental car before the weekend.

Get there early! Last Saturday we got there around 9:30am and 95% of Lot G was already filled. It was a beautiful day and gas has been creeping down. Forewarned is better than no warning.
And the beach was wall-to-wall with people and a kid who dug the deepest hole you could imagine, right smack in the middle of the beach!
