The beach is a LOT smaller than when I went in June. They have roped off much of the back of the beach, as well as the south end. Pretty good crowd for a week day. Weather was great. Lots of couples. The lifeguards were all at the 2nd stand. Most of the couples seemed to be near them. I had setup before the lifeguards came on duty, right behind that stand. Worked out nicely!! I should be back in mid September.

Just a note and observation from my week at the beach. Weather was pretty much cooperative, with it not raining until I had left. Talk about timing. lol The water is a bit cooler now than it normally is this time of year. Crowds were good, but nothing like they have been in years past. I guess some are opting to stay away while the bridge is under construction, or the possibility of rain every day kept numbers down. The beach is smaller, with the sand being roped off in both directions. I do think they may have moved the clothed area signs a bit more north, giving us nudists a bigger area in the guarded section. While it did seem like the pervs numbers are down, I did catch a few doing what they normally do. If any of you read these posts, just set up and stop the madness. I don't understand why you have to jump to a spot on the beach as soon as a young girl throws her towel down. If thats your reason for being there, there are several bars on route 36 that will give you more pleasure. I, as a single male, find it very irritating, and am getting close to confronting them myself. I know I am preaching to the choir, but maybe the word gets out to those that need to hear it. Finally, as a word of caution, please make sure none of you drink an excessive amount of alcohol at the beach. Tuesday, a young lady had a bit more than she should have, and the life guards came over to check on her. She looked sick, and was lying there very awkwardly. Stick to juices, water, and the like, especially on hotter days. No need to make an ass of yourself, or make yourself sick, just to have a drink. I'll be back down next weekend, so keep the summer going. BareNJ

The beach is somewhat narrower, probably due to the lower numbers of visitors as well as the less needed lifeguards. It is a downward spiraling effect.
The roped off area at both ends is really only in effect on the weekends. During the week you can walk right past the “forbidden” zone of the roped off area, provide you do so at low tide or when the tide is going out. There is no rangerette guarding the Piping Plover on weekdays. However, there is a rope off area on the beach just beyond the high tide that is protected. As long as you don’t camp out on the “protected” beach, you’ll be fine.
I’ve met many people walking on the beaches on the shoreline. Of course, any area north of Gunnison is a clothed beach. As for the southern side, that is just about anyone’s guess. I have encountered many nude people at least 200 – 300 yards on the south side. I did make it almost to the Fishing Beach and I never did encounter a Clothing Optional Sign. I was clothed as a precaution.
The government is apparently in the cutback phase of funding and the need for more manned lifeguard stations is greatly diminish. I bet that the number of visitors to Sandy Hook based on paid admissions is down by about 35% or more this season. Blame the economy, the bridge, and the high gas prices and it may take about a season or two for Gunnison to recoup. I was down a few weekdays and a couple of weekends and I noticed that the “dune” people were a lot less this season from last.

When they rope off the piping plover area, it is good stewardship of the environment to obey the rope. This bit of walking around the end at low tide is what I am preaching against, because that still scares the piping plover.
In past years, they opened up those areas in mid-August.

Anybody going to be at Gunnison next Friday or Saturday? My family is taking a vacation to the Jersey Shore but are going to a textile beach. I, the queen of "I am NOT going to have tan lines!!!," am thinking about taking off for my own beach instead- a good nude one where I won't get the ever-dreaded tan lines.

I did go on the 6th and had a good time, although I didnt stay very long. I was a little self conscious at first but that went away quickly. It was just me alone and I wasnt there to gawk but my paranoid side kicked in and had a feeling that everyone was thinking I was there for that.
The beach was relatively empty, but this was about 3:30pm by this point. I couldnt get over the long walk through the sand! Anyway, I found a spot, away from people, but not overly far away. I got settled, stripped down and laid out. I was there for about a half hour before I left.
I wanted to go into the water, but still was worried about my belongings despite earlier posts that they should be OK. I would like to try and go back before the end of summer. If anyone else knows of a date when they are going, let me know and maybe we can save on parking or something. Plus then we can watch each others belongings also. The weekday was nice because there wasnt alot of people there, but a weekend may be OK also. I work in retail so could switch days off pretty easily.

I hope mikew1226 had a nice day. As others have said. Folks look after each other. I've even gone back to my car while leaving everything on the beach. I don't bring my wallet to Gunnison, just like I don't carry it in the casinos in AC. I bring my ID and some cash, my credit cards etc. are either locked in the trunk of my car or in my room safe. I try to remember to bring the spare car keys(the ones I give to the repair shop guys). I worry about loosing them more than someone taking them. As for the other issue (Adam27), I guess they picked an open section on the beach. That may have seemed like a good idea. But, the vultures took advantage. There is a recent post from a couple who ended up down in the gay area. At least they had equal opportunity gawkers.

I asked a park employee, and he told me this:the plovers' nests were destroyed by a storm in June, and so the NPS took down the ropes. Then, the little buggers re-nested,so back up they went. The chicks have nearly fledged out now,so expect the entire span to be re-opened soon. It's nearly a mile from North Beach's southern border to the "Entering Clothed Area" sign on Fishing Beach's northern border. Plenty of room for solitude down that way,if that's what you prefer. There's more wildlife, and no gawkers, either.
Speaking of gawkers,I've yet to spend a day at Gunnison without spotting at least a few of them. Most are regulars, like the 60-something guy in gym shorts, tennis shoes and socks, wearing a headset and wandering aimlessly among the couples. We call him "Phys-Ed Guy".Then there's the 50-something bozo with a moustache,a baseball cap that he leaves on even when he goes into the water, and wearing big sunglasses. He lurks slowly around, looking for young women. When he finds one or two, down goes his towel for a while. These types are a fact of life at Gunnison. After a couple of trips there, one learns to ignore them.If they get too intrusive,a direct stare back at them is generally all one needs to do to spook these timid losers.
What my GF and I find rather more annoying than the silent gawkers are some of the nut-brown regulars, who saunter over to our blanket and strike up conversations under the flimsiest of pretenses. These old wind-bags are usually far harder to get rid of than are the roving spectators.("The Chiropractor" is an example.)Then, there's the young black man with a bottle of lotion in hand, who offers massages to strangers...FEMALE strangers:)
What ya gonna do?It takes all types,as they say.Nobody is so persistent or intrusive as to spoil your day,as long as you don't take them seriously.Hang in the couples' section near the lifeguards, and you'll be fine.
In the net, there's no place I'd rather be than Gunnison,lunatic-fringe and all.See you all there next weekend!

Gunnison update for anyone interested. I was there on Saturday, Aug. 9 and conditions were very pleasant. I read some of the recent posts about flies but there were none as far as I could tell. The water was nice, about 70 degrees or so and clean. I went in 4 or 5 times and saw only one jelly fish. It seems like we have had too many cloudy days this summer but hopefully good weather will prevail for awhile longer. September is a great time to be on the beach.

I've been seeing pretty regular reports on SunnyDays site. I wonder if he would be there.

I most likely will be there this Friday, and maybe Saturday. Planning to stay with some friends over the weekend to get some more sun. My tan is fading!
The usual crew that I hang with usually ventures on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I just don’t feel like switching days around at work!

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have been going to gunnison most weekends this season. I usually go alone which I don't mind, but wouldn't mind meeting people from here either. If anyone is going this Sat let me know.
