Anyone think that upper 60's predicted for Wednesday and Thursday coming will be a good day at the beach. It's been a while for me and I really want to get back! On that note, I'm checking the online forecast for Sandy Hook in general. Do I need to make a mental adjustment for "beach weather"?... JoAnn

It is hard to make a reliable prediction for Sandy Hook weather. It depends on the direction of the breeze (whether from over the ocean). I myself check the Atlantic Highlands forecast on the Internet.

I suggest that you pack a sweatshirt in your bag, just to be sure. I do that. You can wear the sweatshirt and nothing else.

Naturally, Catbird

I just checked the weather for the Atlantic Highlands and it looks like 72 with patchy clouds for Thursday. After that it goes downhill and stays there for the duration. I think I'll have to chance it. Thanks for the sweatshirt tip Catbird. It's better than not going at all. It will be a long winter... JoAnn

Hi Revampd... go for it. Wednesday and Thursday look good... Wednesday more sun but cooler, Thursday, warmer with a few more clouds. As you said, it will be a long winter so take advantage while you can.

I would love to make it but have to travel to Florida later in the week (poor me) and won't have the time. Will be looking for a Gunnison trip report from you when I get back.

Hey all,

I went up to Gunnison today and the forecast was a little off. It was supposed to be sunny all day but in actuality it was only partly sunny from about noon till 2:30. When the sun was out, it was very pleasant on the beach but when it wasn't, it was chilly. I left at about 3:00 and by the time I hit Rt. 36 S. it was sunny... of course!

I'm glad I went but I missed the sun. There weren't very many of us on the beach as you'd expect for this time of year and this type of day but still worth going. Maybe the weekend?

The weather this weekend looks like if might be OK for a few last hours at the beach for this season - would like to find another couple to meet us and take some photos of us together so we have something to look back on - shouldn't be very many people there so we won't be offending anyone.

Anyone have interest? We can only get there for a few hours so we need to plan.

Sunny,

If I go back up I certainly wouldn't mind taking your picture. It's a little too early to know if I'll be able to go. Sunday looks like the (slightly) better day. Monday looks very nice! When were you planning on going? Oh, and I'm not a "couple" but I don't think the camera will mind... lol.

OK,so the site works again!I was getting weary of writing a reply, only to be denied access after I tried to post it...

This week is looking amazingly good,weather-wise.Supposed to be near 80,with light winds.Anyone going on Tuesday/Wednesday?

It's a 4-hour drive for me,through some pretty bad traffic, but it's worth it if the day is warm, and the sea a swimmable temperature.(NOAA says 67 or so,which works for me...My GF,she likes it well over 70,but that doesn't happen very often, even in early September.)

Curious;how many beach-goers are there on a nice day in October?Never ventured there so late in the season before.I'm guessing maybe 20-30 diehards will show, even on a warm day.(At least parking won't be an issue!)

All advice welcome.Thank you.

Hey Fishman,

I was there yesterday and it was a beautiful day. By the time I left at 3:00 the parking lot was about 3/4 full. Of course it was a Sunday. I was also there last Wednesday (little cooler) the there were probably only 20 or thirty on the beach. I'm thinking that this time of the year I wouldn't go if the temperature was much below 70 and sunny... definitely not if cloudy. Of course I get cold very easily.

Also, one lane exiting (going North) is shut down for construction, I guess because it's the off season, and it took me about 45 minutes to get to the end of the park. Weekdays won't have this problem.

Enjoy!

For anyone interested... this Sunday is the annual polar bear swim at Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It starts at 11:30 a.m. Wish I could go but just can't make it...

Weather forecast: mostly cloudy, high 40 degrees F.
