I like your idea Shroder, another thing I have thought about is to take pictures of the voyeurs and posting them warning others who they are and what they look like. If they have the camera pointed at them everytime they arive I'm sure they wouldn't stick around long.

We (may) all agree that taking pictures is rude and violates some unwritten code of ethics of naturalists, but you need to be careful about how you respond. I'm no legal expert, but, from all of the various discussions around this board and others, I think it's pretty likely that people have a right to take photos of people who are naked in public without permission, as long as they don't use those photos for commercial purposes. Some of the behavior in question might cross that line if the photos are ending up on a pay site, but you don't have the legal right to stop most people from taking your photo, and you certainly don't have the right to threaten them or assault them.

Well, that's why what I would REALLY like to see, and wish that naturist groups would start pushing for, is some kind of modification of the law that does, in fact, make this kind of thing illegal. We all know that there certain types of behavior that will get people tossed off Gunnison. This, I think, should be added to that list. That way it could be dealt with by those who are supposed to be dealing with this type of thing, not some kind of vigilante justice. Quite frankly, if the rangers are going to accommodate the perverts, they shouldn't be surprised when they find perverted behavior.

It's true that anyone is within his legal rights to take a picture of anything in a public place. It is also within another person's right to object strenuously to same, even to the extent of belittling the offender.
If any of these guys possessed a set, they wouldn't be so covert about pursuing their little hobby...They are by definition sneaky little weasels, and they tuck their tails and run when confronted. If you are reluctant to make a scene, you merely have to walk up to them and ask "Are you taking pictures?".That'll work every time.
But whatever you decide to say,say SOMETHING!There will always be pathetic losers on Gunnison, but they must not be allowed to get comfortable.Even the handful of regulars who subscribe to this thread can make a huge difference,if they cowboy-up and take the little time required to do so.
See you there tomorrow!

Again, though, what I am calling for is to make this particular public place an EXCEPTION to the "rule," considering the highly unusual circumstances and potential for abuse that exists on a nude beach (again, remember that a public restroom/locker room is a public place, too -- it's open to the general public). You know, kind of like how it's an exception to the law that states that being nude in a public place is "indecent exposure." Only then will this problem be truly solved and the beach be made a comfortable place for all people to enjoy.

I still really don't think that the worst offenders (as in the ones contributing to the adult websites) are using cell phone cameras, but rather fairly high-end Canons, Nikons, etc. THOSE are what you really have to watch out for. My son has a new droid phone that has a 8mp lens. The pics are incredible and it fits in his pocket very easily.

I think you meant to put those first two sentences in quotes. But anyway, sure, I could be wrong -- I don't claim to be an expert on cameras. But I've seen some of these pictures, and the level of zoom is incredible. It looks like the Manhattan skyline is just a few miles off shore! I still really doubt one could accomplish that with a droid phone. After all, if you could, I don't know why anyone would buy optical zoom lenses.

The crowd seems pretty sparse there this year, even when the weather is great,as it was on Memorial Day.A couple of the perennial gawkers were lumbering about,though...You can count on them showing up every time.
I wonder if these two observations are related?

I would think there are a variety of reasons for thinner crowds thus far this year. Some may be playing the "wait and see" game to find out what it will be like with the bridge construction this year. People may have avoided the big Memorial Day weekend because of that. More might try to come during the week instead of the weekend. The economy could be another big reason. Those who drive more than an hour or come on the ferry might not be planning as many trips this year. They might be waiting for even better beach weather in July and August. Me, I haven't been there this year only because I haven't found the right day to fit it into my schedule yet. Might not get there until July either.

We made our first trip there on Memorial Day weekend. The long line coming in on 36 North was very bad where they merge you into one lane. Paid our $50 annual fee - I think they only take cash - at least that was true last year. Most parking lots were closed including ours. I parked in that next lot up - I think they call it the North lot. I thought I remembered people saying it was 1/2 mile walk, but it is no where near that - maybe 1/5 mile (?). Maybe a ten minute walk carrying chairs and such - nowhere near as bad as I expected. Of course the beach was packed - we stayed back along the dunes - did not feel like walking further to find a spot. I was truly surprised and pleased with the number of couples there - the most I had ever seen. Very nice day. We went back the next day (Monday) and came in from Red Bank onto 36 South (going north of course) and that was a snap. The parking lot was not full (about 11:00 I think) and there were much fewer couples on the beach - we setup near the water that day. It was a fabulous day with a nice breeze. There were several teens that were non-nude and obviously there for the show. I never saw anyone taking pictures but there were several people that appeared to be lurkers - both nude and non-nude. I like the idea of posting the jerk's pictures somewhere.

OK, by that logic we (females) should ALL stay home then - why should any of us risk our well-being? Why are your female friends any better than the rest of us?
I've learned from several private messages I've received that several of the women on here agree with me, and several other folks are truly offended - apologies, that was not my intention.
I was reacting to the idea that it was acceptable for me to have problems, but not any of the women that you guys might bring, hence the reason you came alone, defending why you were at the beach as single males; I didn't mean or intend to impy anyting other than that.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.
As I've said, I'm going to give Gunnison a rest this year, perhaps heading over to Lighthouse or down to Haulover. We've also had an invitation to a private, secluded backyard pool from someone on here - great idea! Please keep these invites coming, by the way, please! We can't wait to try backyard clothing optional venues!
Have a great and safe summer.

Except that I NEVER SAID IT WAS ACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO HAVE PROBLEMS!!!!! That is a gross mischaracterization of what I said. One more time, I want Gunnison to be a place where NO ONE has problems. My bringing a woman I care about isn't going to accomplish that -- it's just going to give another woman problems, as in potentially basically becomming an unwilling amateur porn star. To solve the problems on the beach, you need to actually take steps to SOLVE the problems. You know, addition by subtraction, I guess you could say.

Beautiful beach on Fire Island. Just keep in mind Lighthouse is 2 sections. The closer (west) section is right next to Robert Moses between field 5 and the Lighthouse, so there is a lot of textile traffic. That's also where most of the CO beach users set up. If you go past the lightouse to the east section, it is less populated and less foot traffic, which is good if you like to keep to yourself more.
Hit up the Lightouse forum for more info or to meet up with the regulars.
